Hello friends,
Long time since I ventured into this world, perhaps 2-3 years (I actually bought my copy in a store). I have just reactivated. It's good to be back.
After much consideration I have decided I would like to start a new player of a different race. I'd like to focus on building this new character to fit new objectives that brought me back to the game. I have infinite patience and don't mind starting from scratch and rebuilding my skill tree. I would like to solo for a while and build up ISK doing missions (Contracts?? I don't remember those from when I last played) until I have built up enough expertise to be able to join a corporation that fits my goals and for which I can make a welcome contribution.
Until then, I like the idea of playing a character who can outwit his opponents using the technology of EVE and his cerebral cortex instead of brute force or speed. From a Roleplaying PvP perspective, I envision a stealthy pirate who can sneak up on unsuspecting and unprotected villains in space and overwhelm them while they watch me dismantle their systems and deliver justice. Electronic Warfare is what's calling me back to the game.
Is this type of character feasible? Is EW more viable now than it used to be? What kind of race and build would you recommend to attempt this? I'm going to do some research before I create my new character, I haven't started him yet, but I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions while I'm still planning. I imagine I'll be soloing NPCs in the early days while I'm still building my skills, and that once I'm more advanced and ready to take on real opponents, I will want the benefits of corporate kinship and camraderie.
It's good to be back. Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks,
Regnor d'Vex

well Caldari are all about EW so guess you should go for caldari ships.. and sneak attack with ew involved sounds like falcon to me
you should look into recon ships, all races have one type of recon ship that can warp cloaked and dissable a enemy in some form or another
Welcome back btw |

Edited by: Herateis on 01/07/2008 12:13:34 you can EW in anything, but I guess from your description, a cruiser with a rainbow of EW mods (sensor dampener, weapon disruptor, ECM), and probably rig/implant yourself with speed stuff, and the lows will have tank or gank setups.
With EW being ONLY in the mid slots, you'll want to choose something other than caldari since that will nerf their tanking capacity.
warp scram, ECM, sensor damp (for when they break your ECM), weapon disruptor (if they manage to start firing at you), and you're a solo nightmare.

Ah, so if I want to go EW I will want to focus on ships that provide enough mid slots for those purposes while not gimping my ability to outfit for other vitals? If Caldari ships suffer that problem, which ships should I be looking at?
Here's another question. My original main from when I played 3 years ago is Amarr and is outfitted for Amarr ships. It seems to me that since there's no limit to the skills you can acquire, it might make more sense to just build from my prior character instead of starting over with a new character. The only problem I see is with my starting attributes, which could otherwise be optimized for a pure EW specialist (I was thinking Gallente Intake Reborn Industrialist). Narrow and unbalanced, I know, but it's an option I don't want to rule out until I hear from other more familiar with the long term gameplay.
Here's my old main's current attribute layout.
Total skill points 2,037,761 Intelligence 16 Perception 12 Charisma 7 Willpower 16 Memory 15
Apart from the time that it would take to rebuild a new character and the lost investment in this character (I'm patient, I'm in no hurry), am I better off longterm starting over to maximize my attributes in a different direction, or should I just start from this guy and rebuild toward whatever racial ships and skills I need?
What do you think?
Thanks Herateis and Kendar for the WB, it's good to be back. I can feel the addiction starting all over again!

Unbonused EW is pretty weak. If you want midslots and you're not going for caldari, then you're looking at minmatar. But they have the worst EW - almost no-one uses target painters outside of missions. Sensor Damps and Tracking Disrupters hold the middle ground in EW. At the moment, the Caldari are the undisputed kings of EW, and it's pretty much a no-brainer to train Caldari Cruiser 5 if that's what you want to specialise in.
I can tell you from personal experience that the Caldari recons are highly effective ECM platforms - at the cost of not really being able to do anything else. The other races' recons have weaker EW but can also do other nifty things like destroy an opponent's capacitor, warp scramble out to 45, 60, 80 or even 100Km, or web out to as much as 60Km. Opinions vary as to the value of the tradeoff.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

Def go with Caldari if your going for EW. Train up for a Falcon and you really shouldn't be worrying about EW modules taking up your midslots because if your good enough they wont even fire a shot at you ;D

Every race has their preferred EW style, so lots of ships will give you different flavors of EW. By the sounds of it though, you might be more included to go into jamming which is a Caldari specialty as others have stated.
In terms of effectiveness, a skilled EW/Recon pilot is very effective. Just about anybody can fly some type of EW platform, but those who push their EW and recon skills to the level 5 mark really start to stand out.

are you able to have your alt train at the same time as your main?
or has that topic been dealt a death blow.

Every race has its good EW ships. Try looking at them all and decide wich you like the look of ship and avatar-wise. Then everything else falls into place. Thats how I went with starting in EVE.

A new character now starts with roughly 800k SP so you are only looking at less than a 2 month training differential between what you have now and a new one. A new one with the right setup may well get you into the fancy EW ships (e.g. Falcon, AKA "Can't touch this") a lot faster.
Grab EVEMon and set up some plans with your current character to check things out.
This thread has some useful links as well.

Let me get this straight,
You want to be some solo hero who want to be able to pvp 1 on 1 on most human players?
Well, let me advice you now: STOP training for Caldari EW.
Solo Caldari is a joke, you'll be as deadly as a spoon in a knife fight. No one gets scared when they see a Falcon lurking in local.
If you want to be able to take people down, then fly Minmatar or Gallente. Train to Heavy Assault ships and wreck havoc as a soloist or small gang.
Minmitar Recons: Rapiers and Huginns can be deadly as a solo player. Webbing someone at 40km and warp disrupting them down and u can kill most ships cruiser down.
Vagas are nano kings. Ever Wonder why 80% of gangs u see in 0.0 space compose of some nano Vagas?? Deadly speed and DPS package.
Gallente Recons: Not much useful anymore since their EW have been nerfed by CCP.
Ishtar/Deimos: lil DPS packages that are usuful for solo or as small gang. They can bring the hurt and the Ishtar can be nannoed and take down most solo BS.
Ask around, Caldari for solo pvp? Yah, in my dreams.

You should start with an arbitrator- arguably the most versatile e-war cruiser ingame atm. It's Amarr so your char might be there allready. The skills required to fly an arbitrator are also not really wasted if you choose to train for another ship/race afterwards (drones). -

Yeah since your already specced Amarr I would look at the Arbitrator and later the curse. Completely draining someones cap could be fun and ive seen a lot of solo setups with the curse and some badass drone bashing. Heres an example of a curse solo build in case you want to plug it into evemon....enjoy the nanowhine when you take someone out since they cant hit you
HIGHS: medium nuet x 3 small nos x 2
MIDS: 10mn mwd warp disruptor tracking disruptor *(with optimal range disruption script loaded) large cap batery cap recharger x 2
LOWS: overdrive x 2 nanofiber cap relay
RIGS: polycarbon engine houseing x 2

You can only train one char per account at the same time. If you want to train up an alt at the same time you need a second account. You could also use a second account just for some months, then transfer the char to your main account and cancel the second account.
ps: also came back after a year of hiatus and a month of AoC :)

Anhtarus, et. al.,
Yeah, I have an interest in solo PvP, but I've been away from the game too long to remember any of the terminology. You say Vagabonds are nano kings, what are nanos, are those drones? And what kind of loadout packs that big DPS punch you mention? I like the idea of speed and DPS, few things are more critical in PvP. I obviously have a lot to learn, but I learn fast. I'm building a new guy and skilling up his Learning as we speak, so I have time to learn the new world. Things look very different from the time I left.
How do you make money these days building up to that point? My old Amarr main used to main and has only about 2million ISK, is that enough to bankroll my way toward a career? And what kind of EW capabilities does a vagabond have?
Many questions. I look forward to just playing ...

Nanos are ships that are much faster than usual... reaching up and beyond 3-4km/s speeds; hence, uncatchable (without a minmatar recon ship...). If you want to be unique, DONT go nano; every man and his dog is doing it.
As for money... 2 mill won't get you much at all these days. Way to make money is still lvl4 missions, or 0.0 ratting... though I doubt you have access to either... Especially if you want to fly recon ships, for EW, each one goes for quite a sum of isk (80-120mill, depending on popularity).
