Some time a couple of weeks ago Crossover snuck out version 7.0 of their WINE distribution, based on WINE 1.0. Looking at the notes for it, this version is more or less up to par with the Linux version of WINE, which means it has Premium support. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but apparently you just need to install EVE and then enable GL Shader Language support for EVE so that the client will allow you to use the Premium graphics.
Since I haven't had a chance to try it, I don't know how well it runs. Someone will need to try it out and report back to us (they have a free demo, so there's no need to buy it). ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

I'm not that impatient, a dev stated in the thread below this one that premium is coming to Mac anyway, so why tinkering around myself?

So do you suppose this means that CCP will ultimately give us the Premium client in a silky smooth Wine 7.0 environment, as opposed to godawful-by-comparison cider?

No, Cider will integrate the WINE 1.0 code and then try to make Premium work with their stuff. To be honest I'm not too sure how successful they're going to be, both due to outstanding issues with the Mac specifically, and because they've been doing poorly for the most part with the Mac client throughout its entire life. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Hey Verite,
I've been trying to get this to work, using the latest version of CrossOver Games (7.0) and the EVE Online Windows Premium Client (58188), but everytime I attempt to install the software, I get this error message: "The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus. You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy. It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED)."
Anyways, I tried to do the /NCRC command line switch to no avail, and I also tried to download EVE Online Premium version 51200 (which is in the install options), but it seems as though that link is outdated.
What did you do?

Edited by: Verite Rendition on 02/07/2008 07:50:14 Use Crossover 7.0, not Crossover Games 7.0. Right now Games is older than the mainline Crossover due to the fact that Games was based off of an earlier version of WINE in order to get the gaming improvements out sooner (seeing as how Crossover 6.2.1 was fairly archaic as far as WINE goes).
For what it's worth, I also started with the Classic client just to make sure things were working, then I updated to the Premium client. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

I cannot, for the life of me get the classic OR premium clients to start installing on Crossover 7.0. Crossover opens, and then... does nothing. Whatsoever.
It did successfully install premium on Crossover Games, but then I couldn't get past the license agreement when I started it.

Edited by: Verite Rendition on 03/07/2008 06:40:35 Create a new Win2k bottle, then install the Core Fonts package. After that manually install the latest DirectX redistributable runtime from Microsoft (the Crossover package is out of date). Then you finally should be able to install the Classic client and work from there. Anything you're manually installing you may want to do via the Run Command option so that if anything unexpected happens, it'll spit an error back out at you. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Edited by: Jael Mallow on 03/07/2008 09:11:56 If you can't install the Core Fonts pack - you can just drop the arial font file from a real windows installation into the bottles c_drive/windows/fonts folder.
And for premium you might need to change a registry key.
Run "regedit", find HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D and the key "useGLSL" and change it to "enabled".
Hope it works somewhat - I am still experimenting myself. Blargh Honk Honk! |

Seen that upside down thing before.
Enable the HDR - then disable it. It's a known issue with the Premium client under Crossover. Should be listed under the Hints & Tips section on the relevant application page on the Codeweavers site.

I got it working too. There seem to be several minor graphics glitches and bugs: for example, I too experienced upside-down graphics and had to toggle HDR as well as restart Crossover twice before it worked.
This is awesome! I'll be using this until/if CCP releases the official premium graphics client for Mac. Thanks Verite!

Following the directions provided in this thread I can get the game running, however I'm having some issues that perhaps you have a quick fix too.
While in station I can see my ship, but the environment around me doesn't seem to be rendering, in space has the same problem; everything else looks great but stations are not rendering at all, just the lights.

I've tried all the ways listed here in this thread to get the client to work, and I've run into snags.
First, I get an error after running the newly installed client (premium or classic) on a new WINE bottle saying it can't install or can't find the installer for "d3dx9"ùI'm assuming that's the DirectX Runtime that needs to be installed. I still get that error even when installing Runtime before the client is (I'm using the June 2008 redistributable version). Am I using the wrong version, or is there something else I'm missing?
This is a screen of the error: Linkage
Then, after going through with trying to run the client, the Agreement dialogue comes up, but with no textùand thus, I can't scroll to the bottom to continue.
Here's a Screen of that.
I've installed the core fonts manually, and have tried installing both premium and classic clients straight into new bottles. Still nothing.
Any suggestions?

I don't have a mac or crossover, this is coming from my experience with wine.
Download http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_35 http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_36
Put them into ~/.crossover(???)/drive_c/windows/system32

Edited by: Soleramnus on 18/08/2008 05:03:10 Edited by: Soleramnus on 18/08/2008 05:02:24 Got it! The client works now. Exceptà it says the my computer does not support the Premium content. It works just fine in Classic, the performance is quite good too, but there's no option to upgrade.
This is with an install that is *already* Premium. I've also tried updating the client, but it returns saying the premium content is already installed.
Would this be a hardware issue now? I'm running MacBook Pro, Duo Core Intel. I doubt it's hardware, since I've actually played with Premium on bootcamp in the past with this very machine.
Is there something else I'm missing now?
(For the record, I've tried this on Win 2k and Win XP bottles, since it says Premium is only supported on XP and above).

Thanks for that reminderùI tried that before your other fixes, but had forgotten that this time.
Making progress, but still no cigar. So close! It seems like there's a rendering issue now. The environment at the login screen and (at least when I tried it on the win2k bottle) is black. The interesting thing is that I can get to the character selection screen, and then select my character. It loads almost to the end, but then the client stops and seems to freeze right before it enters my ship.
The Black Login Screen
These are my graphics settings ATM. I've tried flipping HDR on and off, but it doesn't seem to help the client finish loading the character. Graphic Settings Screen.
I will try messing with the other settings to see if it fixes things. All the appropriate files/installations seem to be in their appropriate folders.

Edited by: Soleramnus on 18/08/2008 06:03:34 HA! IT LIVES!
Dude, thank you so much for your help.
Honestly... I'm not sure what made it work. Win2k bottle leaves me with a gray unrendered background. WinXP bottle now has me in space with strikingly smooth performanceùactually, it's better than the mainstream mac client (but I've got a super-nice hard drive in this laptop, so who knows how it will work with other people). Shadows off in graphics settings may have done the trickùor the bottle might have just been needing restart a few times. I really don't knowùI'll continue to play with settings and see what works/doesn't work.
But for now, it's looking beautifulà literally. Thanks for your help and patience!
Note: another nice feature is that the application is better integrated with the Mac workflow. For instance, I don't need to tab out to access the dockùI'm writing this post in a safari window on top of the game itself. Hotkeys for iTunes work so I can change my musicà it's seamless, really.
I'd recommend this Crossover 7.0 treatment for any frustrated Mac user, if you can get it to work. The end result, in my experience, is not only Premium-grade, but overall better than the mainstream EVE Mac Client. It takes some finagaling and geekvoodoo, but it seems to work just fine.
Thanks to the community for the support!

The space environment displays fine though, as do (some) other ships. Stations and stargates however appear invisible except for their running lights and glowing effects.
Invisible Celestial - look for the overview icon
Strange. It works thoughùit works very well. Performance is smooth. I wonder if that's because not everything is displayed? lol
So far:
- HDR enabled renders all environments black and invisible - HDR not enabled renders ships and space environments, but not celestials (most) and station environment - Shadows turned on/off doesn't seem to have an effect (correction there on my part) - cloaking effect doesn't work properly - renders strangely (either does the whole ship with no transition or seems to do it polygon by polygon) - certain ships will not render - my own does however and some other pilots' do, for whatever reason

My progress so far:
I have only gotten Premium to work on the following setup (MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo 15"):
Crossover 7.0, not Crossover Games
customly inserted Arial.att font to the system font folder customly inserted d3dx9_35 and d3dx9_36 files to system 32 folder
"useGLSL" key enabed via regedit command
à and after restarting Crossover.
However, some ships don't render, station backgrounds don't load, and I also experience frequent hard crashes that force my mac to restart.
Apparently, the rendering issues were noted by Codeweavers in the Games version: Codeweaver support thread
And they state there that the rendering bug is actually on the EVE side of thingsùan uninitialized variable or somesuch. Apparently this happened during the Empyrean Age update, and now Premium graphics won't run (though Codeweavers say they support it). Supposedly this problem is fixed on the test server, but that hasn't been applied to Tranquility yet. That is, if I'm reading the thread right.
Would be interested if CCP commented on this. |

Well, whatever the case for why they chose whichever business to support the other platforms (and whether that support measured up to CCP's standards), I may end up using crossover in Classic graphics anyway simply because I like EVE being integrated with the mac environment, rather than tabbing out just to change my music (Hotkeys for iTunes is great). EVE makes for a beautiful desktop. Even if the OSX client has seen performance improvement since its release (for some people that's improvement, for others it's just now up to par), running the real EVE client in WINE seems to me the better option. The performance is a noticeable grade higher. If I don't have any hard crashes in Classic using Crossover tonight, Codeweavers are my new best friends. Better to have an EVE that works well than having a non-native client that is "officially supported"à sometimes.
Besides, Crossover is some sweet software anyway, EVE besides. |

Edited by: Commander Excelsior on 03/09/2008 17:54:44 Edited by: Commander Excelsior on 03/09/2008 17:51:46 Hello everyone :) First thanks to you all for this post ! Using Crossover 7 is a great alternative to play Eve on mac intel... but not to test it during patch day ^^ lol, unlucky i am :p
i want to share some information : So yeah i have a 1st Gen Macpro (4*2,66) with 8800Gt, my ati x1900 was burned by wow, and finished by Multiclient-eve gaming on my 2 Cinema HD... so, byebye ati. A very good card to play Eve online on mac thought, great fps, great graphics.
with my 8800Gt.. hum, playing on mac is a nightmare. yeah still have only one core working at 100% load, but, a little view on my fps : yeah 90fps docked - 20fps undocked (near the station/stargate)- 30 fps in the absolute neither - and, the most important of all : 7-15 fps on mission (lvl 3 for now) depending how many npc/celestial there are.
yeah i'm expecting too much for this 1year dev soft. but : it going worst when i activate shields (looks like albert einstein want to tell my the equation of fission on a thin layer around my drake) and deadspace is a crappy addition of 2D layers... sometime it works when i quit/relog during the mission, but no fps improvement.
So now, what about Crossover :
First of all, Eve is playable with or without Premium graphics. HDR makes space a big black screen, and gray screen when docked. There aren't very much displayed graphic glitches. it seems to work well, stations, stargates, deadspaces, ships etc... Activate shadows or not, doesn't seem affecting the game. (oh, my ship is just more fancy)
time to fps test : Premium Graphic normal with shadow at low: 70fps docked - 20 fps undocked - 30 fps in space (warping) - 7-15 fps missioning, depending number of npc ^^ hum lol there is no improvments !! oh yeah, minimap still scrambled (in another way, i see full images on it, compared to scrambled graphics on cider)
it seems shields aren't correctly displayed (like on cider) when we are too close
Without premium graphic : hum, same thing, no improvment.
It could be an OpenGL driver problem, from Apple directly (thanks again for visiting us yesterday mister Casqade ^^) so we have to wait (we used to that :p )
So what's the big deal? Oh yeah, i love eve in 3800*1200 :) it's sooooooooooooooooo beautiful :)
i will continue to play with cider for tiny mission, and reboot on windows for big ones or pvp, and great graphics. Crossovers, yeah, no... funny :)
Thanks again, and sorry for my mistakes :p if you wanna some more information, let me know :) and Go to the fanfest ! :D in front of a station, without Premium graphic oh, sorry, it's in HD, but not the game, i had problems using the fullscreen in crossover, so, cannot maximise the minimised windows in eve :p

Honestly I consider that a liability. You mean, in fullscreen mode, if your mouse touches the bottom of the screen it opens the dock in FRONT of the full screen game?
Or corners are parsed by exposT?

Yes. I'm not much of a combat play so it's not really a problem for me. And I use multiple programs at once while I play, so it's nice to have something like a spreadsheet floating over your market screen. The regular mac client takes awhile to tab out, and everything else outside of EVE can sometimes take a performance hit. So I tend to use Crossover when I'm going to go on a spat of trading. Just my preference.
Don't know about expose, because I honestly never use it.
Edit: I've noticed since the last patch that if you float another program over EVE in fullscreen crossover, the client will freeze when you click back on it. This makes me a sad panda. ![Sad](/images/icon_sad.gif)

That sounds like an account issue. Never had any trouble like that with Crossover. Hate to say it, but make sure you're using the right password with the right account name, that you haven't been banned, your subscription hasn't run out, etc.

My account works fine, tested to log in on the usual Mac client without problems and same on my PC. Through Crossover it can "see" the amount of players connected to the server so it can't be completely disconnected from internet at least. ___________________________________

Then you finally should be able to install the Classic client and work from there. Anything you're manually installing you may want to do via the Run Command option so that if anything unexpected happens, it'll spit an error back out at you.
I am just starting to try Crossover so maybe I haven't found it yet, but how does one "manually install the latest DirectX redistribution runtime form Microsoft"?

So I installed crossover and the windows client is functional... in classic. I looked at the regedit thingy that was suggested, but I couldn't find the wine/direct3d file. Is this because I need to install directx 9.0 on my mac? I downloaded that, and tried to install via crossover, but it didn't seem to work. The installer finished and all, but then stopped, as directx needs to restart the computer and turn off all apps. So I quit crossover , and of course the installer exited with an error. This seems like a lame and embarrassing stumbling block on my way to premium graphics greatness, so I come here asking for help from the mac/wine gurus. BTW, this thread has already been really helpful, and I think I'm almost there. =]

It only reboots Crossover and the windows environment it mimics. Your Mac should not reboot for that, or at least it didn't do that here.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. I don't think it did do that, though. Crossover just kept running the installer, without rebooting. Is it supposed to be automatic?
Also, I take it that I'm on the right track in installing directx 9.0?

Okay I installed directx 9.0 on this computer using normal crossover (was crossover games before). But the required Direct3d file still isn't showing up in regedit. Any suggestions guys? ![Confused](/images/icon_confused.gif)

Well, I finally got it to work with classic (premium was just garbage on my screen),.. I ended up having to switch on logging and then it behaved ok for some reason.
Though unfortunately when it crashes it still hard-locks my system, so a bit higher risk then the cider version.
I'm starting to regret having purchased a 6 month block now. It looks like once QR comes out, I'm basically out a client. I don't want to have to resort to using a CC chargeback but from a customer perspective this could very well be 'paid for a service that was then discontinued'

I'm still not getting it to work. I downloaded the d3dx9_35 and _36 files, and stuck them in the appropriate folder in the WinXP bottle. But when I go to open "regedit", the registry for enabling premium graphics, via HKEY_CURRENT USER/Software/Wine/Direct3d isn't even there. If it's important, "regedit" opens via Darwine, which I am using for EFT.
What am I doing wrong? Is it that I need to install the EVE premium client before going to regedit?

Okay so I finally figured it out - I needed to open "regedit" with crossover, not darwine. Anyway, I set the GLSL to enabled, added all the d3dx9 stuff, and it still says that my computer does not support premium graphics. Maybe it's my hardware? I'm running a normal macbook, so perhaps this whole endeavor wasn't the best idea anyway. ![Laughing](/images/icon_lol.gif)

I have to say I did this about 6 days ago based on this specific thread. Premium works and it looks a lot better than classic. I would have to say that its just marginally more stable than the official mac client right now. But hey.... I get premium graphics while I'm at it. So I'd say its better than the official mac client.

How heavy a load does crossover place on your mac anyhow? memory and cpu wise?
I usually have 2 or 3 CS3 apps open in addition to 2 eves in classic and have never really had a problem from day one apart from the discobox and the occasional crash - both of which are eve related problems rather than mac problems.
Will crossover suck up enough memeory to require ONLY playing eve?

It doesn't seem to use much in the way of additional memory. Premium however can change that... ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Sorry Icarus. I've never used Darwine. But on Crossover, there is a feature to "reboot" the windows environment. Is there something similar for Darwine?

Edited by: Bakkhai on 09/12/2008 06:25:01 Hello and thank you all for a very informative thread.
I have 90% success in this whole EvE/Codweavers process.
1. Installed EvE Premium (not and upgrade) 2. Installed current DirectX from Microsoft (in it's own bottle) 3. Installed the Arial Font (by grabbing it from a Windows System and dropping it the proper place (see above) 4. Edited (enabled) USEGLS in reg edit 5. Restarted Crossover 7.0.2
Works well, but the graphics are not premium looking. At least the ships don't look right. They look like the normal version.
Q: is there a way to know for sure if the premium content is displaying? Q: if not what step did I miss?
Thanks very much in advance.

Make sure you have premium graphics enabled in the settings for EvE.
The graphics should look more detailed and more metallic.
