Has a line been crossed when such situations are taken to the extreme by the opposing party? Does it mean that you have succeeded, gone too far, or perhaps in the worst case scenario, strayed far into dangerous territory, taking your name to the dogs? This is the question I have been asking myself recently, with the culmination of a series of campaigns that have recently finished, and one that it appears is just coming into fruition. I suppose it's that sense of morality that makes us decent people, even in a game, where we can act as we please, albeit within the jurisdiction of the EULA. You'll have to forgive me if I ramble a little, for I am but a human opportunist, but I feel that the issue needs to be raised. You see, I've just been threatened with legal action for a war declaration. One side of the affair can be found here. However, I think I now have enough material to provide Verdant Inquiries War Diary. The war is not yet over, but to hold back on this would be detrimental to my mental health, so here we are.
It's a sign that the community is rapidly declining I guess. Threats of out of game legal action over game pixels, whilst not common, arenĘt exactly rare. Why is this post worthy you ask? Well I only have my personal opinion to go on, but I really do think that this individual needs to go under the spotlight (and scrutiny) of the Eve Online community yet again. I will however, have to beg you for a small amount of your time before you join the discussion, because context is always relevant in such situations. Without further ado, let me begin.
Or not.
I was going to write a long piece about our reasons, and how the whole situation built up. Perhaps I still will. It struck me though, is this person, this corporation really worth the time it would take to post such a thing? After the shit hit the fan with this declaration against The Nutterz Inc. IĘve repeatedly wondered to myself if I am doing the right thing. Morality in Eve can be classified as a sad affair, but I definitely think that it makes us who we are, be we pirates, industrialists, mercenaries or others. So this post isnĘt a request for affirmation from the community, but the musing of the CEO of a small corporation who continues to do big things in the world of empire piracy. Self proclaimed perhaps, but when idle threats reach this stage, you start to wonder. Am I on the right path?
Musings over. Open fire. ---

Well, someone asked for the whole story, so the first installment of the war diary:
On the 27th of June I pushed the button. The Nutterz Inc, a twenty five man corporation of PvE origin had been selected as a target for only one reason. They smacked. Badly, as it happened, but not for lack of trying. Their name had been referred to my by a friend of mine, Major Stallion, a common face in Aramachi who told me that they were in the business of loot left after suicide ganks. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but when one goes and denies it, running their mouth off in local all the while, it provides a rather reasonable justification to respond accordingly. So we did, Major and his friend Max Nero first, then my own corporation a day after. The chance for smack was too good to pass up. As the initial dec went through, and I did them the courtesy of convoing one of their members to inform them of reasons etc, VERDA attempted a ransom. It was, of course, turned down, as we expected, but there was one major issue. There was no smack. Was this going to be just another generic war declaration with nothing interesting happening, meaning that our 6 million ISK had been wasted? In hindsight, my doubt was somewhat made on assumptions, and I am glad that I didn't retract the war right then and there. The Nutterz corporate member list was a ticking bomb waiting to go off.
The war goes live, yet we see nothing of them. All the signs point to another generic PvE declaration. However, something keeps me from retracting, besides my corporation members affirmations that the dec will lead nowhere. Cue the first of July. Locator agents inform us that there are several Nutterz operating in Motsu. We form up and head over there sharpish, still with a hope that we'll get one of them before they scatter. That night, luck was on our side. Two Ravens and two Drakes awaited us, all eager to engage Major Stallion's Sleipnir, who had been docked in the main mission running station picking up ammo. We played dock games for a while with them. They warped off, docked, tried to engage lone ships, but failed to cause any real damage.
Was this still just a generic war, or was it something more? Something...worthwhile?
Needless to say, we flattened them. I wonĘt boast about it, but it really was a fish in barrel experience. They kept warping in, even though logic told them not to. I donĘt know whether to give them props for that or not. It wasnĘt tactically ingenious, nor did they have the superior force, but...well...*shrugs*. They did it, and died. The lag was atrocious, but that was to be expected. The next thing I knew, IĘd been invited to a conversation. We were trying diplomatic routes again, attempting to resolve the situation peacefully now that we had given a show of force. I hate to use a military reference, but itĘs all SOP for every corporation we dec. Then, suddenly, jackpot:
***** ******* > lol we can bring the pirate coalotion in m8
From that point on we were cooking on gas.
Now, whilst itĘs true that idiots lower you to their level and then beat you with their experience, if you get enough experience the tables turn. Is this a good thing? IĘll let you decide, but what such experience brought us next, nobody could expect.
***** ******* > <----- GOLDEN GLOVES Heavy Weight Midwestern champ mother ****er IRL... i bet you a **** in mommies basement LOL
They fulfilled in the space of five minutes and just kept on giving. In hindsight he might have realized that he was his own worst enemy, but for now, we had all the fuel we needed to continue...
I'll get the rest up when I get around to writing it.

Unfortunately, people are still under the impression that since they pay for a game service, it should cater to their every need - and simultaneously that all pre-exisiting legal/moral/civil norms are carried into said game universe. In Eve's case, the only thing you should expect to get for your $15 a month is a stable server connection, anything else is just a privilege.
I don't think its necessarily a sign of a degrading community more as it is a sign of Eve's slow encroachment on the "popular mmorpg" market. When we all started, Eve was made of people leaning towards the hardcore who, while they play the game as hard as they can, still understand its just a game. Now that Eve is more popular and advertised everywhere, we're starting to pick up the more casual gamers who, for lack of a better phrase, "don't get it."
Either way, keep up the good work. People like this need a rude awakening that life doesn't always go for the best.

My reaction? You get what you ransom.
If these posts are the metric for the "crossing the line" then Eve has crossed the line 3 years ago. I can randomly pull messeges from my inbox that is far, far worse than this.
Recommendation? Let whoever take whatever legal action they desire. Let us know how that works out. On second thought, nah don't bother

But the funny thing is, I am still here, and I find it totally amusing that you need so much support, yet I am yet to flinch. Looks like I am going to be sticking around longer than you thought chaps :).
Keep up the good work in the forums, you know it makes sense. Is there a prize by the way for how many look at threads about Vader, if there is, surely I must be due a Faction Battleship by now.
You could then come and kill that couldnt you, is only isk!, and would give you something else to add another 4000 viewings to attached with the Vader name.
Keep it up Sofia, its fantastically brilliant.

Edited by: Andreus Ixiris on 08/07/2008 22:57:12 Well Vader, to be honest, you have the ISK, the ships and the agents - if you want to fight us, we're right here, you know exactly how to use a locator agent, and we're not afraid either. If you're as eager as you say to settle this with guns rather than words - well so am I. -----

Ironically you are missing the point. This isn't about how you're still here, it's about how you think that boat violencing in an internet spaceship game is somehow justification for a court case. I can't say I don't find it amusing, because it really does point to signs of desperation on your part no matter what you say. Egotism is something people need to control. In many situations it can be a good thing in moderation, but in your case you've thrown moderation out the window and it just makes you look like an asshat. Talking about how your RL job is the cause of the dec is not only absurd, but childish too.
Although I suppose...if you can threaten people using legal game mechanics with court action then there's definitely something wrong with the individual. I think it's clear that somebody needs to fix that. ---
