I think the better question would be "where did X3 steal most of their names?" _______________

Most of the names there are from Greek mythology. Thread fails.

Some of X3: Reunion's ships were created in X:BTF and X2 which both came out before EVE... Dont turn this into a which is better because we all know if X3 went MMO then CCP would be screwed.

X2 came out 1 month after EVE
X: Beyond the Frontier came out 3 years before EVE.
But the fact is that most sci-fi ships draw from these key areas: - Animals - Mythology - Weaponry
Failthread still fails.

Not only that, but X3 invented Greek mythology, birds, etc. The Ancient Greeks ripped off X3. So did nature.
The periodic table also must have ripped off X3, since it has Argon and Boron.

Seriously, though, this thread fails hard.

Even though it has slipped off the frontpage, I still think it deserves the correct answer to where the ships got their names from. As it turns out, CCP did not copy their names from X (or X2 or X3), but from the ancient game Elite. CCP has several times stated that game as their main inspiration for EVE and if you check this page, you can see the old Elite ship names. I can mention the "Eagle Long Range Fighter" (well, doh), Merlin and Wyvern. Yes, almost all of them are Caldari. CCP loves Caldari. That's no secret
Also, the Caldari FW ranks (the icons, not the names) are very much inspired from the Elite logo

Matari Ships are primarily named for things in Norse Mythology.
Gallante Ships have some Greek Mythology in them.
Caldari Ships are named for animals. (Caracal is a type of cat for those interested)
Amarr are generally named with a religious fervor.
Mythology and Animals are a common way to name ships.
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts. |

QFT.
Fighting aircraft also share this naming convention. Mustang, Eagle, Falcon, Hornet and such. Others take from nature as well such as Thunderbolt, Lightning and so on.

Not only Greek, but there's names from other mythologies as well. Ishtar is Babylonian and Taranis has Celtic origins, for example.

Some names of ships from the original jumpgate: Octavius ships: Raven Wyvern Condor Pheonix Buzzard Hawk Raptor Griffin Vulture Roc (Sound familiar? Let's look at quantar next: ) Typhoon Cyclone Hurricane Tempest
The ships run off capacitors, one of the main types of defence is ECM, there is a fourth, unplayable race that is said to be ridiculously powerful yet dying to some disease...
Oh and go look up the griffin in jumpgate, it looks just like the condor/crow
Oh and the original jumpgate came out a few years before eve. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes, ty. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |
