They've been around since the beginning of the Internet. They started out as text-only representations of the classic 1960's "Smiley Face" logo, like so: :) Seriously, are you incapable of using a Search Engine? This is basic "Internet History 101" stuff. Elysarian Minmatar dudetruck corp	Posted - 2008.07.09 20:57:00 - [8] if you're talking about the one posted by others on this thread then it's origins actually date back to the Rave culture of the late 1980's - early 1990's and were linked by the population at large to LSD (mostly because at least one type of "tab" had the image printed on it). Could be older than that but that's when I remember it becoming common.

Ahh.. My bad then. I thought the OP was just talking about regular smilies. Now that I see the WAY TOO BIG version posted by Crumplecorn I know what the OP means. Interesting info by Elysarian. I had no idea that it was related to Raver culture. I had always assumed it was a SA Forum or *Chan invention, as a continuation of the previous "Smiley face" stuff already found everywhere on the Internet. Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application.

But yeah this did start as a meme on 4chan... I do not know if it actually came from sa.com, the two communities have a sort of love/hate relationship ^_^.
