Edited by: Dreez on 24/05/2004 00:30:28 And as we set new course for the far away system called W-Q233 where i usually hunt pirates , the weaponscrew started to prepare for battle. After almost 30 minuttes of warp we finally came into the system and i ordered a scan of the surrounding belts.
- Captain, we are picking up 1 Juggernaut and 4 Ravagers in belt 2 at planet 5 sir.
I had faught these kind of pirates a while ago in my MOA cruiser and they had been quiet some fight, almost taken me out at one time when my cruisers energygauges malfunctioned and gave me the wrong readings. Witch caused my guns to stop working.
- Set course for belt 2 planet 5 and make it fast.
Hammerheads warpdrives dissengaged as we came out of warp at the belt and there they were . All 5 of them , hugging eachother about 50 kilometers straight ahead of my ship.
- Battlestations, Activate Defensive shields and kill the Juggerknaut first !.
- Yes sir, Activating wards and locking targets sir.
I knew from experience that those Juggernauts were not to be played with and if they were to get in close , it could turn out really ugly. As we accuired lock i observed the lockingcomputer, damn it took a long time to lock for a battleship.
- 5,4,3,2,1 , Locked Sir. - Fire at will !.
Then all hell broke loose when my 4 Megabeams fired at once, the recoil alone could be felt through the entire ship. I can only imagine how the pirate felt like. I watched the Juggernauts shields and some armor go away in one volley, it had taken alot more then that with my cruisers 4 heavy lasers. This would not be a fight, it would be a slaughter.
After a few seconds when the firefight was over , i sat down once again in my chair and asked myself quietly.
- Where will it end.... Or will it end ?.
That day, alot of pirates died.

Here i finaly was , in the office belonging to Techell Corporation with one of their salesmen - and there were the contract. I had been waiting for this moment for so long and now when it was time to sign the papers for the ownership i could hardly belive it myself.
I remembered it was not long ago since i started myself as a rookie to this great Corporation called Vector , i swore to myself that i would work my way up fast and try not to dissapoint the CEO that had given "OK" for my application to join it.
There... The salesman named Datsevlu stepped through the officedoor and gently closed it. He looked like an honorable man and had a firm grip when we shook hands. He offered me coffee but i had to decline because i was already "speeded" enough and would rather need something that cooled me down.
He sat down in his chair and mumbled to himself for a while and then looked up with a grin on his face.
- This lookes good , everything is in order and sheŠs ready to go , she is in the main hangar now . My mechanics are mounting the equipment you asked for while we speak. Should not take to long. You can see her through that window overthere if u want.
I declined once again , i know that if i had done it i would probably have jumped through the wall to get to her. But i eased down , took the pen and signed it with a pen that probably had signed more ships then i could ever dream of.
We shook hands once gagain and as i left the office he immediatly shouted in the intercom-radio.
- Get the Scorpion Battleship ready for takeoff.
I had heard about this Battleship, how everyone that had seen it thought it was a tiny vessel and feared that i would regret my investment. I had seen it myself at a battle when it slipped through my Cruisers jamming and escaped - but i dont remember much of it because it was over so fast. I gave my card to a guard that opened the huge secure vault-like doors and stepped into the hangar and proceeded onto the catwalk. Round the corner "she" was waiting for me and nothing could stop me from going to 20 steps ,my heart was pounding hard now.
There she was ,in all her pride - i fell in love at first sight.
- Goddam shes a beauty. ( i said to myself)
As i walked onto the catwalk leading to the bridge of my ship i noticed that she wasnt so small afterall. The pressure-doors opened as i closed in on the ship and as i entered the ship a artifficial female voice said.
- Welcome Commander Dreez.
As i entered the Commanderbridge the crew of the bridge saluted me and brought me up-to-date and asked for their first orders.
- Take her our gently
I walked to the huge window covering the bridge and looked out over this giant. The doors opened to the space and there they were ,the stars never looked so beauteful in the dark space ,witch my battleship did its best to light up with its thousand blinking lights.
Suddenly i was cleared of the base and there was my partner Digital Sin. I gave the order to set course for Rairomon System and then i contacted Digital Sin over the radio and informed him of the comming warp. Then i gently sat down in my chair and gave the order.
Digital Sin was one of Vectors old warhorses and he had bought a Raven battleship from Techell the same day. He was just a eager to see the Scorpion as i was - if not more , and as we both aligend for warp , he said:
- SheŠs a fine looking ship Dreez, whats her name ?
I replyed: - IŠll name her Hammerhead , and yes - she is indeed a fine vessel.
I suddenly found myself commanding one of the most powerfull vessels in this known universe , and i liked it ... alot. After a while i walket to the bridge-window again , amazed over the warp and its awesome possibilitys due to the superb powergrid.
I tought to myself.
"Im piloting a Scorpion , after 3 months i finally made it . I am a Battleship Commander".
As i stood there thinking , the navigationsofficer.informed me that we was just about to reach our destination and he asked what to do.
- Lets see what this ship can do for damage.

Really enjoyed your story :)
Oh, and though it's contrary to the whole, single person in a pod controlling the ship, I'm sure I've seen blueprint graphics downloaded from somewhere on this site that show something like "Crew: 42" for certain ships....can't for the life of me find it now though.

Ships do have crews, although a relatively small number because the captain does most tasks in the capsule.
Most frigates have one pilot; the larger ones used for hauling have 2 or 3.
Cruisers have a few hundred, and Battleships a couple thousand.

Edited by: Demangel on 22/05/2004 01:52:40 Right No real bridge setup, though I wouldn't be surprised if the ships have backup bridges in case the Pod/Captain/pilot is destroyed, but the general gist is:
Ship crew size can be reduced signifigantly due to the use of a pod. Pods are a jovian creation (for more info read the short story Jovian Wet Grave in the POTW section).
The pilot/captain (whatever you prefer to call them) is suspended in a green fluid like substance called ectoplasm. The pilot/Captain is connected to the ship through nueral interfaces (not sure if these are cybernetic but they probably are).
Once connected, the pilots body and brain control most of the ships functions.
Your lower brain functions help regulate the ships more automatic functions (I think), and of course your higher brain functions control the active mechanisms of the ship, such as navigation.
It really is a clever and immersive way to explain how this works, and the thought of piloting a ship in this manner is very exciting to say the least.
After reading this old story, you soon realise why most people don't mind not getting out of thier ships... They would need to take a shower or something first at the very least :)
Other benefits include faster reaction times, and less chance of the commands being delayed in combat due to human error.
The crewman are largely used to provide backup for automated systems, and possibly ship defense in the case of boarding parties (It might not be in game, but it makes sense).
Naturaly there are some tasks a machine, or automated system just can't do that a crew of humans can. The larger the ship, the more likely these tasks are to turn up.
My only problem with this is that we have no effect on our crews, and they all seem completely expendable... I have never once seen escape pods launching while my ship is breaking apart heheh.
It would be nice to be able to hire a crew and for them to act like another way to customize your ship... The basic crew that comes with the ship giving no bonuses... but hiring better crews can add to certain stats, like powergrid, cpu structural integrity and so on. Would be kinda cool :) And it would give high charisma characters potential advantage in areas besides dealing with NPC's
(IE having high charisma means better leadership training ETC making your crew a little better regardless of type purchased)

Your a bit wrong there:
All ships are controlled by the pilot in the pod. Frigates need no crew since they are so small. Cruisers and Battleships needs a crew though, becuase of the size.

Edited by: Jec Polux on 22/05/2004 08:50:13 Its funny the debate that generally begins whenever the topic of whether ships have crews rears its head. But whether they do or do not, presumably the confusion arises from the ship database here on this site, which contains a handful of the ships from each race, and has a blueprint type picture of each, on which a 'crew number' is clearly visible. This link should take you to the Scorpion entry, and it states the crew number as being 6400.

Wether ships have crews or not is up to CCP to tell. All the short stories, chronicles and scientific articles are written by different people. So there is no real figure for their crew size.
From what i've read, frigs seem to be one man/woman piloted (Gallente/Caldari war, but could have changed over time :P). Cruisers and up could probably be piloted by only one person, but maintenance like moving cargo, loading missiles etc. would require personnel to at least be able to board the ships. Tho that could easily be replaced by robots.
The control of the ship and modules are to reflect you, moving the cursor across the screen. From that assumption your ship could be totally controlled from your pod. Would also seem probable that future (space)warfare, if any, had a very low cost on human lifes.
Still a heap of unanswered questions. I.e what would happen when a pilots thoughts start to stray? An easy example is the movement. Try to keep the thought that you're moving to the right for 10 secs, while being still in your pod. The whole ship controlled by your "superior" mind, is interesting to say the least, but also very unlikely to happen within the boundaries of the human mindset.

Nicely wrote. Remembering feeling the same sorta way when I got my first scorp.
As for the POD thing, well yeah it does state that ships nowadays use pods to control them but its not an iron solid rule and you can always come up with somthing like you paid to have an old style bridge system installed instead of a pod for whatever reasons I guess.

Good Story...
and for the Crew and Pod thingy, I force myself to think that there is thousands of crews and a ship Brigde where the Captain is like in Star Trek and Babylon 5, and the Pod is really a Escape Pod with all the survivors, not just one...

I would prefer if replies like this could be keept out of neutral posts like these. Yes, me and Iceblock disslike eachother on TQ and are enemies since long time back, but that does not meen then we cant aknownedge a good story and pay respect to it.
And im acually really tempted in making a long story divided into 7-10 parts, question is: Is there anything to it . When i get my Pen&Paper there aint nothing i cant do .
Once again.. Thx for da very nice feedback dudes . Maybe if one of the "mods" could inform me of any "special" requests they have about a story and iŠll get right on it.

Often better to create an idea in which the option is there, a crew or a pod. Thats what most of us do
