Edited by: MadCat360 on 12/07/2008 03:42:36 Has anyone ever thought that EVE would be more fun with a more action-oriented combat system? I'm thinking along the lines of Freelancer here. I'm just kind of thinking out loud. Combat is definitely a good system as it is but I can't help but think it would be a lot more fun if we actually piloted our ships and guns. But then I guess that would make a lot of our skills useless. And what would we do about the obvious differences between battlecruisers and smaller frigates? Maybe frigates could use the mouse or joystick and the cruiser has more of a RTS control scheme like what we have now?
What do you guys think about it?

Yes, undoubtedly. To some extent twitch already is ingame - nano bumping for example.
If twitch could be implemented, it would make eve STRICTLY better, as it would preserve all the strategy elements (you could do everything you always could with espionage and titan hotdrops and whatnot) but there would be an additional element of skill.
However, it is technically impossible to put it in a game like EVE this late. It would cause massive lag and probably prevent any battle with more than 10-20 people from occurring at all. You'd probably have better luck making an EVE freelancer mod or something cool like that.

Check out Jumpgate: Evolution that is being developed atm. Looks quite impressive so far and has the twitch gameplay you suggested. It may not have the total depth of EVE but it's shaping up to definitely be a contender in the Space MMO scene and may give EVE a kick in the butt. Will be interesting to see once it finally comes out...whether it's any good is another thing but here's hoping it will be.

The 'accidentally' released video from it was basically made fun of by the whole GD forums a week ago or something. It contained tons of cheesy dialogue, nothing but small ships, rather lackluster and graphically deficient combat, among other things.
I'm excited for a space MMO but this one probably won't be it. Too bad star trek online was permanently delayed due to some corporate disagreement.

Edited by: Hesod Adee on 12/07/2008 06:01:15 By having Eve as it is now, you get plenty of time while fighting to use text chat with other players. If you put in this twitch system, how would you call your corp mates for help without reducing your combat ability while you sent the message ?
Then we have lag to consider, since twitch gaming is hit harder by lag than our current controls. For instance if you have manual aiming lag will make it much harder to hit your enemies, especially if they are orbiting really closely.
Lets also not forget Freelancer's stupid turret setup. Yes you can shoot behind you, but only if you fly in a straight line. How would you remedy that ?

I sincerely hope you aren't typing during combat. NEWS FLASH: Everyone uses vent, so it doesn't matter how much twitch there is as it won't disrupt your ability to communicate.
The lag issue is the killer and what makes any kind of twitch in EVE impossible.
I haven't looked into the feasibility of an EVE freelancer mod and haven't played freelancer for a couple years.

NEWSFLASH: From time to time, we chat with people who aren't currently on Vent, TS or Eve Voice, or any VoIP thingy... I don't know which game was worse, Jumpgate which is WoW in space, or Star Trek online which didn't even have PvP.

The main problem with your idea is the lag, we already get alot of lag as is. Something along the lines of what you are proposing would make the game exceptionally more laggy. In addition, alot of people who play eve are not into the "twitch" based style of play, were the winner is determined by who can move their fingers faster.
