Edited by: Liang Nuren on 14/07/2008 06:52:32 Hey,
Some of you know me as the world's biggest S&M *****. Um, wait, that didn't come out right. I ***** S&M. Wait, that's no better.
Well at any rate, I consider Ships & Mods to be my "home" on the Eve-O forums. Unfortunately, my time in Eve may be coming to an end. I've bought an estate in the country (Hey guys, I bought the farm!)... internet is rather an unknown quantity.
At any rate, I've got some reasonable source code written in Python that could be expanded to an EFT-like tool. It's more geared towards numerical simulations. I'm willing to put some work into it and slap a GUI into it, but I'm much more of a numbers guy.
I've seen lots of interest in open sourcing EFT/QuickFit... and I've always thought it a crying shame that it hadn't happened before. So my question: What level of interest could I get in helping me maintain this Open Source Fitting Tool (if I can stay in Eve).. or in maintaining it in the future?

I'd be interested in helping you out with this.
Drop me an eve mail and let me know what you need.
Also, sorry to hear about you possibly leaving. I enjoyed reading your battles with trolls and your generally informative posts.

Look into satellite internet. Even in the sticks you can usually get a decent connection with satellite, and there are usually local satellite internet providers around places that don't have high speed. I don't think I could consider moving some place without high speed internet though tbh. That's one of the first things I look at in a move, and I'm pretty excited to try out the Fios connections down in Boston this fall.
As far as an open source fitting tool, I think it'd be great and was always a little disappointed that EFT, as good as it is, hasn't been open-sourced. I have bar exams this summer to worry about that are soaking up all my time, but I could perhaps help some this fall. I haven't done much in Python before, but I have a CS undergrad and I imagine I could pick it up quickly if I had to.
Seriously though, get yourself some internet. What would S&M be without the *****s?

I'd be willing to help. I don't know Python, but I'm a strong programmer, good with design and optimization.

Well that's rather more support than I was expecting at this time of day. So, is there any sort of feature list that you guys would like to see in the intro?
I'd (of course) like to clean the code up a bit before releasing... and I'll have to look into finding the password to my SF account.

It'd be neat to have an ability to swap ship bonuses (boni?) around to see theoretical effects they would have on performance. At any rate, open source fitting tool could be really neat and perhaps even become more evolved than EFT is right now.
And find an ISP! There's only a few competent people left in here as it is.. ________

You're on about releasing an open source fitting tool now? After I just spent the last several months writing my own?
My own effort is pretty much done, it just needs some small bug fixes and some additional data entering in. I'd be particularly interested in seeing how you've done your calculations and what simulations you have built. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Python is currently very limited (only bought a beginners book last week!) so I'm probably not going to be much help to you in the coding aspect.
My fitting tool is also open source so maybe we could compare notes/code?

just to let you know: i use my mobile phone to connect to internet and eve works just fine. If you have UMTS conenction its excellent but also EDGE connection is good enough, if you avoid voip tools and uber-large-fleet-battles.

Hmm, that's a very interesting thing. My "tool" is currently more at a complementary status to EFT than a competitor.
I'll send you an Evemail with my email address and we can talk this over. I'm about to goto work.

That's why I wrote what I did in Python... it works on Linux and Windows. :)

After chatting with Vessper via email, I see that he's got a much more complete fitting tool than I do (it has a GUI!).
https://sourceforge.net/projects/evehq/ I encourage everyone to go check it out and help him knock it out the door!
