4x 250mm Rails (Named, preferably)
1x 10mn MWD 1x Medium Shield Booster 1x Webber/NPC Appropriate Hardner
4x PDU 1x Mag Stab II
You may run into CPU trouble with this setup if you dont have Weapon Upgrades 4. Most mission NPCs are easy if you keep 30-35k range with iridium, but loading antimatter and slugging it out is faster. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

For NPCs/kill missions:
3 250mm rails 2 150mm rails MWD Medium shield booster (named booster is better) Some hardener (based on what you are fighting. It's hard to go wrong with EM or thermal, though) Mix of power diagnostics and co-processors, depending on skill. More PDUs and less co-processors are obviously better.
Lots of people prefer 4x250mm setups, but I've always preferred 3x250's and 2 smaller guns. You don't have as hard of a time fitting them, plus the mix will serve you well if some npc frigates get too close/fast for your 250's to track.
When you get into PvP, you'll probably want to change this to a blaster setup and swap the hardener for a webber. When you do, look hard and fast at ion blasters before you go nuts and try to fit all neutron blasters.

I'd have to disagree there. As long as you have a MWD, the range to mission NPCs is whatever you want it to be. Having 3 250s in optimal means that youll either have to load really terrible ammo into the 150s or forget about them.
Plus it helps a lot when fighting some of the heavy missile spammers to fit a micro or small SB into the 5th highslot. Since 4x 250mm isnt that hard to fit with engineering 5, I wouldnt hamstring my damage output with 150s. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

Edited by: Rekiem on 25/05/2004 07:01:18 From my experience, any setup with Thorax using a MWD is bad. So no matter what you try to fit, its always going to be horrible. I suggest the origal poster to learn how to use bookmark so you dont need a MWD to travel.
A 10mn MWD eat too much powergrid and too much CPU, not too mention the horrible cap and shield decrease. Because you have MWD, you cripple your whole ship and your only option to have a longer range than the NPC. You can't fight anything that shoot missiles because of that.
Now considering this, your best setup is probably this;
Hi 4x 250mm rail
Med 2 x Shield Hardeners 1 x Medium Shield Booster
Low 2 x Cap Relay 1 x Power Diag 1 x Reactor Control Unit 1 x Magnetic Field Stabilzer I or II
You can also try to fit five 250mm Rail by changing your low slot setup, but try to always keep the damage mod, its very usefull

You can't fight anything that shoot missiles because of that ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am doing level 3 kill missions at the moment on Gallante side and using mostly Thorax for them.
Doing them with this setup:
Hi Slots:
3 x 250mm, (2 x Small Smartbomb II or whatever fits, energy drain por even 150mm rails)
Med Slots:
MWD, C5-L Medium (booster), Medium Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I (Extender)
Low Slots:
A lot different stuff, but usually at least 2 or 3 Power Cap Relays.
I don't actually ever get shot at apart from that one pirate NPC called Ominafi and occasional long range wrecking shot from Mercenary Commander as they both have a long range setup. For rest, I simply play cat'n'mouse. I never get hit by any missiles unless its due to lag. Its all about timing your MWD bursts and optimising the range. The booster is there just as an insurance, extender as a compensation from use of MWD.
Sometimes I do use 4 x Rails ( with 10MN AB/Hardener for EMP) for a change, but not even considering it when have to go against more than 1 Guardian Trooper at the time.
I think what in general is wrong with the setup from original poster is that you will run out from cap very very fast. Hence it is better to actually go with less guns and more cap recharge. -------------------------------------

Personally, I've had some bad experiences with MWDing warp scrambling npc frigates, which makes me distrust using the MWD while fighting. The ability to take those things out when they pop up close to me is, IMO, the main reason for fitting a couple of small turrets.
My strategy when using a Thorax against npcs has always emphasized survivability over raw damage output, and it's seemed to serve me pretty well. I'm not saying it's for everybody, but it's how I tend to fit for fighting npcs.
Also, I don't use heavy drones against npcs. They just cost too much. It's lights, mediums or nothing for me.

hi
3x 250mm rails 2x electron blaster
med
1xshield booster 1xmwd 1xcap recharger
low
2xPDU 2xRCU 1xdmg mod
bay full of ogres
with this I can tackle allot of npc's (setup not suited for pvp) and if they get too close I just take them out with the pair of blasters... anyways this is just a setup to me... and I am fine with it. -------------------

I always bring a full bay of wasps, but I only use them to take out frigates orbiting in close, then I put them away again. NPC cruisers tend to target drones first, and they are too expensive to lose for no real reason. Plus, on the off chance you get jumped in a belt by someone in a cruiser, they've got a good chance of letting you get out in one piece.

Ironically, I tend to feel that any thorax without a MWD is just a bit of bad luck away from an embarrased admission of loss to NPCs. While a MWD does knock shields and cap down, thats mostly offset by PDUs, and theres really no sacrifice of damage. What a MWD gives you is the ability to keep whatever distance you want from all but the highest NPC rats... which you shouldnt be hunting in a cruiser anyway. And since you can turn it off in space if you have an absolutely critical need for cap recharge, the biggest downside to it is the used midslot. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

Best Thorax setup ever:
5x Miner2's AB and shield booster maybe. 3 CPU 2 Cargo Extenders
8x heavy drones
that's the best thorax setup ever ========================================== |

My setup for level 3 kill missions is as follows:
High: 5x250mm rails (3 are named, 2 are basic)
Mid: 2x cap rechargers(1 is 13% the other 12%) C5-L emergency shield booster
Low: 2x reactor control units(+10% to grid) 3x power diagnostic units
This ship can handle any lv 3 kill mission - i have taken on the 2 moa mission and with a number of warp outs(make sure you warp out before they get to about 15k they will scramble your warp) i have completed this mission(probably the hardest lv3 kill mission imo) I use antimatter and tungsten only - this suffices for me.

I thought warping away from kill missions caused the pirates to completely respawn with full shields / armour.
As to a Thorax setup... nothing beats blasters. Lvl3 kill missions with any of the 85k rats take under 30 seconds before they are dead.
My original blaster setup was: 2 x neutron 3 x ion.
I have been using 5 x Anode Electron blasters recently, and they are pretty awesome too.
Medium and low slots can be used to hold your shield up, or tank your armour a bit. For pvp I would use an armour tank setup (so that you can fit a web and scrambler). For NPC I just use shield boost / hardener. -- jamesw Rubra Libertas Militia

I use: 4 x 250mm (named) 1 x Small sb (named)
1 x AB II 1 x Med Shield Booster 1 x Shield hardener
1 x int nano 3 x Power diags 1 x damage mod
The top speed is not the best, but using AB II instead of MWD leaves me plenty of cap for shield boosting, plus any NPC that gets too close has to deal with my drones anyway. I used to fit a MWD, but the energy drain was too severe for my taste

NPC'ing setup
3 250 rails w/ iridium M 2 150 rails w/ antimatter S
1 Thermal hardener 1 Med Shield Booster 1 EM hardener
1 warpcore stab 1 Cap relay 1 dmg mod 1 tracking mod 1 small armor repairer
This setup is nice because it has defense against most NPCs dmg types, is self sufficient in that it can up its shields and armor by itself w/o docking, and can run away from any NPC rats even if they have warp scramblers. The mix of 150 and 250 rails gives me coverage within several ranges and the 150s can still track targets up close. I also drop heavy drones if it comes to that as well. With the cap relay, I can maintain 1 hardener more or less forever and 2 for several minutes with all guns firing.

For NPC hunting I go with:
High: 3 named 250mm rails 1 150mm rail smartbomb, med if you can fit it
Med: Medium Shield booster II EM hardner or appropriate for NPC damage 10mn mwd
Low: 4 cap relays 1 tech II damage mod
This has served me well and I was quite successfull as I can run the shield booster forever and only on rare occasions do spawns get through my shields (in 0.0)

Edited by: Rhava on 01/06/2004 08:33:37 I'm a miner atm. Low skills in gunnery stuff. (1.4mil total.) So I thought thorax is best for me when doing lv3 agent missions. (With my drone skills.)
High 5x dual 150 rail
Med 1x Med cap battey 2x Cap recharger
Low 3x Cap power relay 2x Medium repairer
8x Ogres
Simple and maybe boring, but i survive against 85k + couple of 35k rats. I can keep both repairers on for long time. I warp in at 15k so don't have to travel forever. If i get hull damage I fit 2-3 med hull repairers temporary at station after mission.

Edited by: Alowishus on 01/06/2004 10:39:38 Consider the fact that 5x 150mm Rail will outdamage 3x 250mm and it is very close to 4x 250mm. You lose range, yes, but by fitting 150mm Rails you can fill up the low slots with Damage/Tracking Mods that increase damage/range even more. You will also be able to fit a 100MN AB that is a better alternative to the 10MN MWD if you are woried about Cap/Shields.
Try this one:
5x 150mm Rail
1x 100MN AB 1x CL5 Shield Booster 1x Hardener (your choice depending on the rats) -OR- Shield Boost Amp
3x Damage Mod 2x Tracking Mod

You have a lot of attention to cap that you do not need. Additionally, Dual 150mm rails barely outdamage 150mm rails, are harder to fit and use more cap.

When i warp in at 15km against 3-4 35k+ rats i need the cap for my repairers. My shield is gone in a few sec. As i know 150mm rails arn't close combat. Well i could check later today and check if i can get them to 10-15k effective range..
Thanks for comment. I'm new to this just happy that i found a config that works for my 20k gunnery skills and can replace boring mining now and then. Fights take short time and the cargo cans are close aswell. Have BMs around my agents for extra speed.
First i used Caracal / heavy missiles. That was boring and costly... Now i enjoy agent missions.

150mm rails have the same exact range and falloff of dual 150mm rails.
You should try warping in further out and let the rats approach you. lock target, drop drones and send them to attack, when the closest rat gets to around 12k do an aboutface and start heading away from them while firing.
Then, since the previous setup I listed has a 100MN AB, you will be able to go back and quickly empty the cans.

4 250 rails 1 amp, 1 named cruiser booster, i use a med clarity ward, and a hardener 3 relays in low, 1 rcu, and 1 diag make sure to have some high skills in engineering and electronics lose the damage mods for npc hunt because the extra cap relays and amp will keep you alive longer, rather than have to warp in and out again plus some wasps in low cos if there speed enjoyzo

Interesting post, very helpful.
Just to clarify what are the pros and cons of using an AB over a MWD, or vice versa?
Anything that can speed up my gate approaches would be welcome but in terms of power usage/combat I'm a little confused by it all.
Likewise what medium and low slots should I really be using for optimum efficiency?
Thanks

My long range setup for NPC lev 3 missions only:
4x 250mm , 1x SmartBomb 1x MWD , 1x Small Shield booster , 1x cap recharger 2x tech2 dammage mod, 2x Power diag, 1x energy management ( do'nt remember exact name, btw it gives some powercore and cap recharge bonus)
Unfortunatly i'm lack 8 powercore to fit medium booster, but anyway i do'nt use it. with iridium ammos and named rails my range is over 50k, and i use mwd to be at this distance. This way i kill all NPC without be hitted once, so i do'nt care to mount a smaller SB. If your range ( depending on skill) is quite lower u can use alsotungsten ammo, but this mean that u need many ammos and time to kill 100k-115k rats.
hint: in frig & cruiser spawns hit before frigs. I have also drones with me, but never needed one ( same as my shield booster ).
