No game limited to "thousands" of players per server will ever reach eve's levels of complexity. Eve is awsome because of its "Hundreds of thousands" approach to servers.

Sorry, alt.. That was me, just now..
But I'll have to add that it looks like the optimal MMO on paper. Free PvP, you can build and control cities with assigned guards, players can craft most stuff themselves, skill based instead of level based, you drop all your gear when you die.. It's truly EVE in a fantasy setting.

Darkfall Online, the game that was linked, has been in production since 2001. I am not joking in the slightest. Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkfall
Originally by: Wikipedia On August 29, 2001, Razorwax announced the development of Darkfall and launched its official website [13]. The Razorwax development team initially consisted of five members:

Darkfall has been one of the most highly anticipated hardcore PvP MMOs for 6-7 years now. Trust me, it is way, waaaay out of the thinking stages.
It definitely has the potential to be an incredible game. It hasn't even gotten into closed beta yet (it's in "internal beta", and only the company and a few people close to it have ever actually played it), so no one really knows if it'll live up to all the hype or not.

Also I must add that Mobs in this game are rather interesting.. They can migrate to different areas and if you kill enough of them in one area they might be extinct in that particular area.. Mobs also build their own cities which players can destroy. As I understod they will also spawn in calmer areas where there are less people killing them, so it's not only the players and their cities that is dynamic and can be changed..

I don't think it's intentionally vapourware, rather that the developers lack any kind of marketing or promotion skills, they don't release much info or screens, maybe they work too hard to keep up regular updates like that.. Sorta like a certain company we know by the acronym CCP. They also don't have a publisher, they're basically a company formed by themselves, sounds alot like CCP when they started out, only that they didn't make a board game to boost their funding..

aye :) am quite familiar with eve's conception and the history of ccp, but i'm also blisteringly cynical in regards to the mmo market, and the play environment the churning playerbase of men who want a game to play they can 'own' in create.
err yeah, frankly i question what an mmo actually is, and what they're becoming. in this landscape a game that is as agonisingly slow to develop like this 'darkfall' is irrelevant, by the time it comes out people might have stopped wasting their lives on persistant world games and gone back to traditional sorts or variations thereon, the wii has been tremendously successful for example....or 100 million people will be busy virtualising their entire lives in an attempt to reduce their carbon footprints, lol who knows.

And that makes it exactly 'vaporware'. Because if it isn't, then the devs are either all multi-miljonairs, who are basically in already and do this for their hobby and so have plenty of time to finish this game. Or even more less likely, they have a very very very very patient bank that keeps donating them money

ive been looking at this too. im definitely going to play this when it comes out. Also, the developers I guess made a commitment to release this by the end of the year. Before, it was all plans but I guess this time theyre apparently set to release it this year.

So ya ill give DF a try if it ever comes out.. its like whats the worst that could happen they put in gate's to camp and have a warp in with 50 buddies and go pew pew and warp out system?

The fact that it will feature full friendly fire, Manual aim/blocking of all forms of attacks and you won't be able to put forty-eleven people in the same spot thus making formation fighting possible while forcing you to be careful or you'll end up killing your friends as much as your hurting your enemies?
Sure, you can still "blob" but you'll have to be a lot more careful and tactical about it than in eve where you just gather up f1, f2.... |

Looks exciting and it's not vaporware at all:
Status: June 20th Things are going well with the game testing and with the publishing activities. There are no serious problems to speak of, and weÆre on schedule with our milestones.
A couple of things that have us excited: The Darkfall world has been up in its entirety and seeing it all together we have to say that itÆs a truly massive world, itÆs larger than some countries. You can spend many hours just running through it, and there are so many amazing locations to explore.
There's a focus on optimizing our massive battles capability; we want them to run as smoothly as possible with as many players as possible. WeÆve been simulating massive battles and sieges with more than two hundred characters and getting a good 30-60 fps on average machines so far. Under normal loads we typically get over 150 fps and there are still several optimizations to be made so we expect these figures to improve quite a bit. ...

Oh i agree with you on that part, DF certainly won't kill EO, Although i don't doubt there will be a number of EVE players that leave for DF, I'll probably be one of them assuming that they manage to keep even half their promises which atm it seems they will. |
