What's the role of Covert Ops ships in PvP? I'm talking mainly for Caldari with the Manticore and Buzzard?

Edited by: Mazzarins Demise on 18/07/2008 13:39:38 The Covert Ops ships main role is to be cloaked and skulk around in enemy systems to scout. They use a Cov Ops cloak that allows them to warp while remaining cloaked.
For Stealth Bombers, they can also cloak, but not while warping and their main role is to ambush people with their 3x Cruise Missile launchers to pop Frigates, Destroyers and Industrial ships. Their paper thin armor makes them go pop very quickly so SBs are only good for alpha strikes and to get the hell outta there.

Expanding on the previous poster the covert ops is also useful for scanning down prey using probes, where you can quickly find out where a player in the system is and getting a warp-to bookmark from successful scans.
Other friends in your gang can then warp on your position (ie, you are cloaked 5km from the guy sitting out in space in nowhere, at a so-called 'safespot') and proceed to kill him.

Is there anything that can decloak these? Or can you pretty much just sit there cloaked forever?

Edited by: Mazzarins Demise on 18/07/2008 13:47:13 To expand on the previous poster even more, Cov Ops are also heavily utilized for Exploration as well.

You cannot be uncloaked unless you are 2000m or less to a structure, ship, player, or gas cloud. Other than that you cannot be probed or found and yes you can stay cloaked for forever. Cov Ops ships can survive most gate camps unless the pilot makes an error.

Edited by: Zurrar on 18/07/2008 13:53:46 cov ops fit right can be a awsome tackler for a fleet of stealth bombers. 2 sb's make one raven. so get 4-6 a kitsune, fit damps on the sb's with lock time (not range) scripts and you have something that will take on 3-4 battleships easy. oh, add 2 kitsunes and it becomes a very effective anti nano gang. my cruise hits a mwd'd vaga for ab...ohhh 200 per missile (which is decent for 5-6km/s vaga, any faster they just look silly trying to kill a t2 frig gang)
remember eve is NOT a single player game.

There are two more uses for a Covert Ops frigate
Smuggling small expensive goods to and from 0.0 and Jita (fast shopping baskets)
Covert Ops cyno generators for bringing in Black Ops ships. Hopefully, this will become more common as CCP intends to boost Black Ops ships.

There are lots of uses for covert ops - just remember a couple of things:
NEVER join the militia (covops are no good in enemy high sec where they'd be really useful.
They're great for pis*ing off big 0.0 alliances, especially carebears. However, now you are just reading my signature... Or are you...

If probing down mission runners is your thing, you'll want a covops to reduce the 600s scan time on quest probes to a sane level. Recon probes are pretty much useless if you're trying to probe specific missions (i.e lowsec mission runners) due to the low sensor strength.

In the case of the Helios, its role is to be so unbelievably ugly that people can't help but stare at it, thus resulting in easy kills.
As for all of the other covops ships, as people said above.
