Okay, I can't remember exactly what the tutorial said, and the guide on the main page is kind of confusing, so I'll just ask it plain and simple:
My Blasters have an optimal range of 1,375 m, and the accuracy falloff is 4,000 m.
Basically...what should I set my orbit range to?
Thanks.

Assuming your guns aren't too big for the target and your targets aren't moving around too fast for them to track, you have 100% accuracy at 1375m and 50% at 5375m. At 9375m, you have close to 0%. Keep in mind longer range = easier to track.
take from that what you will.

I like to set my orbit a few hundred meters below optimal. That way as the target moves I don't drift too far out of maxmum range.
Only a few hundred though. More than that and tracking issues start cropping up --Bird of Prey: Forum God

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 19/07/2008 12:53:05 Aopart from the obvious range reason, there is another one; a lower orbit range forces your ship to slow down but at the same time due to the smaller radius increase the angular velocity. At some orbit range you'll have the optimal angular velocity due to ship speed and orbit range.
Thing is, it works both ways... if you look at it from your target's POV he/it has it's own set of optimal/tracking problems. So a certain orbit you set might work ok for you and have worked against certain targets, but if you're EXACTLY in the optimal range/tracking from your new/unknown target things won't go well. Most of the time you can state that against bigger ships you want to get in as close as possible, EVEN if that makes your orbit less optimal for yourself.

You should establish your best orbit range - that at which you can maintain a stable orbit range for both speed and distance.
Only after you've established this, should you choose guns. You choose guns with an optimal range approximately equal to your orbit range. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

Two things:
1) The ammunition you use plays a factor as well. So it's a combination of the weapon and it's ammunition. Here's how you can get the data on that without doing the math. a) Do a show info on your weapon with no ammo in it. This gives you your base line. b) Put one type of ammo in your weapon and do a Show Info again - note how the information has changed. c) Change ammo types to get a feel for how each will work with that weapon. d) Change weapons types to get a feel for how each will work with a certain type of ammo.
2) There are two primary tactics in EVE for dealing with Missions, Orbiting and Kiting. a) Orbiting is best used by small ships using weapons with a rapid traverse against larger ships using weapons with a longer traverse. The idea is that you orbit his ship at close range so fast his bigger guns can't track you (yes this is absurd but it is how the game works). b) Kiting is best used when you are dealing with a large number of smaller enemies that will try to swarm you. What you do here, is to to fit a good afterburner, long range weapons, then move close enough to them (move in at an angle, not right at them) until you get their agro. You will know you've done this when they start locking on you and their symbols have orange brackets about them. These brackets will shortly change to red as they begin firing. Once you've done this, turn away from them and let them chase you. Keep them at range and kill them as they come up. By using the longer range of your weapons, (NPC's are usually fitted with short range weapons) you can kill them with hardly any damage to yourself. Most of your low level missions will involve large numbers of small frigates trying to swarm you.
It is unfortunate that the tutorial teaches you to Orbit with a short range weapon, when the vast majority of your early missions are best run by Kiting - but that's what they did. Time and again you will see pleas from someone in local or on these forums about how they can't run a mission. My first question to them is always "Are you Orbiting or Kiting?" Mostly ... they don't know what Kiting is ...

Orbiting maximizes your transversal speed. In missions, you'd be better off using the "keep at range" command, setting it slightly below the optimal range of your guns. ----------- MOP recruiting Industrialists/miners/traders/missioners/etc |

I disagree with this advice, because any new player with short range guns is then going to click that button and fly straight at a swarm of mission opponents and present themselves as the "perfect" target during their approach. With long range guns or missiles they're better off, but that's not the first thing a player gets these days.

This is a sensible approach. Because if you havent got the spaceship command / evasive maneuvers skills to enable a fast, tight turning circle, you wont orbit properly at your chosen distance. Only do this if you have long range guns, or better still, missiles.
