So a friend of mine and I were messing around with smart bombing low sec gates on sisi. My friend was in a caracal, myself in a mega with 8 large bombs in its highs. Now since you cannot activate a smart bomb within 5km of a gate, I sat just over 5km off the gate in the direction he would be warping in from, and activated the bombs when he arrived.
Only a couple of my bombs hit him before he naturally drifted out of range, and could easily jump out. Am I missing something?
I know that people use this tactic in low sec, and a taranis of mine has been destroyed in this manner. Is this mostly a tactic for catching shuttles, intys and frigs or is there something I am neglecting?

very difficult to kill cruisers with this dont bother trying unless there are three or 4 of you.

basically its a anti shuttle and intie tactic, you can get industrials with drones and kill them normally but i wouldnt count on it.

Use those 1b+ officer smart bombs. You get over 10k range with a couple of them and I think the dps is higher. There is someone in null who uses this tactic with great success. He has the highest K/D ratio in all of eve afak.

That guy eventualy lost concentration for a little while and was caught.
It was also when there was warp to 15km active - so he got several salvos off on each target so could pwn cruisers and even bigger etc with ease.
Also it was before the HP buff - which gave ships a goo 33% hit point growth - making smartbombing a lot harder.
Also it was before interdictors, which would just have bubbled him up.
Kudos to him though - he killed a lot a lot of stuff.

Those guys respawn faster than rats in a complex. Ingunn's infested again. Probably 30+ in local, warping all over the place.

Faction large smarties. They don't cost a whole lot and have 6.8km range.
You won't need to worry much about damage types, since most frigs/inties/shuttles/pods/etc will pop in one salvo anyway.
