Edited by: Razior on 25/05/2004 11:55:03 There is a lot of problems with frigates vs battleships right now, all with the interceptor and mwd deal and the new systems. So I thought there should be anti-frigate weaponry for Battleships. I mean, to keep the reality, no one would actually have a battleship that cant shoot at small objects at all.
What I am suggesting is a short range, quite low damage, high tracking, high chance to hit weapons which are viable to have on for a battleship. This could for projectiles be flak cannons (shells that explode and spread smaller explosives around that detonate within a short radius of the origional projectile), for laser wide beam lasers (expanding beam that can sweep back and forth on a short distance), For Hybrids a sort of machine gun rail and for missiles a fast moving flak missile that is the same thing as the proj thing only bigger.
These would require special kinds of ammo. Projectiles would have to use special flak shells, lasers would have to use wide frequency crystals and hybrids a small specilized ammo. Flak missiles could fit into missile launcher.
These weapons would track fast, do moderate damage to anything but small targets like friggs and maybe drones (could work as anti drone weapon too) to which they would do high damage and they would have a high ROF. Ofcourse they would have to be tuned for balance.
An alternetive would be to just be able to mount specialized ammo into normal large weapons like flak shells into 1400mms and wide lenses onto megabeams or whatever.

Why not actually? Theres no requirement in any fleet that the battleship can shoot small fast things. This is why most battleships are accompanied by support cruisers.
This way you get a nice 3 way rock/paper/scissors balance:
A battle group is comprised of 3 elements: Cruisers to shoot enemy frigates. Battle ship(s) to deal with enemy Cruisers. (Bomber) Frigates to deal with enemy battle ships.
Thus, battles are won by a fleet of mixed ships that use strategy, not just who brings the most battleships to a fight.
At the very least, any battleship that was configured to deal with friages should be weak against cruisers/other battleships. Which means, equipping frigate class guns to deal with frigates IS the correct (balanced) solution.

With the Apoc having 8 turret slots and tach beams using sooo much energy.
Try fitting two named medium heavy beams, it leaves you much more power for using more tach beams. I've been able to fit up to 5 tach beams by using two medium guns for close range. The named medium heavy will reach out to 60km with radios as well.
The medium named heavy beams still do some decent damage but yet track fast enough to help with close range crap.
And combine them two medium heavies with scout and heavy drones.......works well.
They still have to close in past 5 tach beams and multis.......one good shot and by by frigate.

Well have tried using webber or the lower end large turrents or even drones? All you have to do is webb a frigate and its dead.

Or use drones. Battleships all have enough drone space for a minimum of 6 heavy drones (I think). Theres your anti-frigate weapon system, and they're fantastically effective, so no worries there. Battleships don't need to be more powerful, they just need for people to realise that they fill a niche, they not the beginning and the end of combat vessels.

I like the idea, but really, if you wish to be able to hit smaller things, use smalle turrets :)
Thats the way to go. ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |
