It's a bit amusing how theres so many posts on the forums complaining about alliances not using their titans, but when someone actually does and loses it they're ridiculed for it.

We ridiculed Nebba for fitting it the way he did, not for using it. ---

Because using it and dying with tens of billions worth of mods on it is way better then using it and dying with only losing the ship? Would he have survived with super expensive mods on, or would it have just been an even more costly loss?

when a person looses a supercapital the situation is often either preventable, or solid. when nebba jumped into a system within warprange of an entire capital fleet he sealed his fate. however his shitty fitting, may have been the difference between surivival and death in other situations. things like having a good enough tank to make it back inside the shield, having good enough smartbombs to scare dictors and destroy citadel torps can be quite important, having sensor boosters to use your wasp EC- drones, and officer webs to have a chance to kill dictors.
the reason people laugh at shitty fittings on a titan is because it CAN make a difference. if you do something stupid like nebba, no fitting will save you, but that doesn't change the fact in other situations it might.

One would think that having a multi-billion dollar ship fit so poorly is indicative of the players competence with said multi-billion dollar ship.

If you're incompetent with a 100m isk ship you're probably going to be incompetent with a 100b isk ship. If you're competent with a 10m isk ship that doesn't mean you are competent with a 10b isk ship. That's why I've never flown anything worth more than 3-4 hundred mil.
And while I'm not necessarily a great pvper in any ship, I'm pretty clearly worse in more of the 200m ships I fly than in the 20m ships I fly. Part of that is experience (I tend to learn most by doing/dying), and part of it is nerves I think. Another part of it is that the 20m isk ships I fly are there to die for a larger purpose (which I am very good at), whereas more often the more expensive ones are not, but I tend to fly them like that anyway.
Ultimately, it strikes me as a lot easier to criticize someone flying a 20b or 100b isk ship when you've never flown one.

I can't argue with what you've said. However I will raise this point; 2 shitty fit titans is better than 1 "pimped" titan. This may not be the case with nebba, however it could of been with the isk saved(greed always plays a role). All the extra couple resist %, couple km's and few hundred or so dmg, or even the extended web range from awesome mods would be better placed in a 2nd dd. In normal occurrences ofc, pilot error and lack of skill on personal and alliance level always plays a part. However the isk saved on mods and instead invested in a 2nd titan could very well of made up for his mistake in that fight, 2nd dd could have easily given him the time to escape to safety. Ofc nothing is certain and all,.. everything I'm writing is speculation however imagine how many titans would be held by the other alliances if instead of putting tens of billions of mods on a single one, they instead invested that isk in more titans.
