I have a Caldari with quite a few hours of training, though I think I'm still under 1mil sp. I'm hearing that a Caldari is not the best for solo pvp. So my question is; If I want to bounty hunt or pirate solo or in small groups, at this point in time would it be better to reroll a different race/skillset or press forward. MERLUNUS |

Wow... although I'm fairly new I'd think otherwise. Seems as though Caldari fair very well in Solo situations. They have the ability to sit back and have some good tanks.

No, they're really not good in solo PVP. The gear you need for solo PVP (MWDs to close on the target, scram/web, etc) all take up midslots, which you need for your tank.
As a wise man once said: Pick any three. Caldari | Solo | PVP | Success
Piracy/bounty hunting is often/best done in groups anyway.

That right there is where you are going wrong.
Unlike other games with PvP, EVE is not very solo-friendly. Yes it can be done, but it takes the right mindset, as you are going up nearly unsurmountable odds. Outside of ganking the occasional noob in a lowsec belt, there is not really much that you will be successful at solo.
I did notice you added the 'small gang' option in your post, which actually can open up some viability for caldari ships. You just have to be aware that you are going to be sacrificing your tank in order to fit the requisite ewar/propulsion mods that are all but required for successful PvP. You also have the option of some excellent ewar ships from the caldari lineup, but they are very dependent on being in a good fleet, and are always the primary target in an engagement, so you will go through them fast.
All in all, if you are set on flying caldari in PvP, there are some options out there, just don't expect to be able to go out solo and come home with your ship. -=^=-

I'll just add to the good info above: there is NO best race for anything, unless you want to provide a ton of specific variables. Gallente come closest with "best with drones" but that's about it. OK, "best with missiles" goes to Caldari. But I'm seriously done now. So go with whatever you like and have fun.

Race factors into two distinct categories, characters and spaceships. When you say "I have a Caldari," you are referring to the race of your character; when people say "Caldari is not the best for solo pvp," they are referring to the characteristics of spaceships designed by a particular race.
In relation to characters, race impacts (1) what your character will look like (his/her portrain), (2) what attributes your character starts out with (e.g. how many points each to such things as charisma, willpower, etc.), and (3) what skills your character starts out already knowing (e.g. small hybrid turret or navigation or trading). However, characters of any race may learn any skill; a Caldari character who has Gallente Frigate V is every bit as proficient in Gallente frigates as a Gallente character with the same skill at the same level. Further, the Caldari character may actually reach proficiency at, say, Gallente Battleship V faster than a Gallente, simply because the Caldari pilot has more points in the Perception and Willpower attributes.
In practice, many players have found Caldari to be the ideal race because it leads to the best possible attributes; many of the same players have found Minmatar ships to be the best overall for PvP, or Gallente the easiest to quickly become proficient for solo PvP, or Amarr uber at large-ship PvP. So many players end up creating a Caldari character, who then goes on to skill up for ships designed by some other race rather than continuing to skill up for Caldari ships. On the other hand, many players end up choosing the race of their character solely for a nice portrait or for role-playing reasons.
My advice is to do what's fun for you. That could mean choosing a skill path using your existing character, or it could mean starting a new character who will get you where you're going faster in the long run.

The race of your character means little, as all races can fly all the other races ships if you train for them. If you like your character, stick with it.
From what I hear the Gallente ships are THE solo ships though.

Caldari can struggle in solo PvP as their ships are generally not designed for this task optimally - as well as requiring mid-slots for PVP essentials, they tend to focus on long-range potential rather than high-damage potential, and if you're soloing you'll need to be relatively close in order to hold your target down (and high-damage enough to pop him before he pops you), thus negating the defining aspect of the race.
Of course, as with all PvP you shouldn't be entering a fair fight anyway, so you would still be able to take down targets in lesser ships without a problem. But on the whole Caldari ships do not stand up well in a direct fight with ships of the same class from different races.
However, there are definitely exceptions. I'm a little hesitant to link this as it might just add more confusion if you're a truly new player - though there is a lot of good discussion on this same topic on this post from the SHips and Modules forum.

For solo stuff I'd recommend Minmatar, they're fast (which is what you need to get in and out of trouble), have a blatant disregard for cap and work well. Or you can go Gallente wich works best for just about anything, apart from frigates.

Just be the race you want and train another race's ships. Anyone in the game can train/fly anything, and you only start with only 2-3 weeks worth of skill points so does it really matter?

Go for amarr as they have the fastest base speed in game. As your skills improve you can fit nanos and istabs to make your ship even faster.
The best thing with amarr is their superior laser tracking speed, meaning you can fit your ship to go faster than the other races and still hit them when you are orbiting at hi speed.

Why would you say that when they're actually the second slowest race after Caldari (and have much worse agility than Caldari ships)? The only thing I can think of is that you were comparing the Crusader to other interceptors and generalised from there...
