Nice to see I have not wasted my money.
In summary
DirectX 11 will work on Windows Vista, and will also be compatible with existing DirectX 10 hardware

It's nice to see that even Microsoft is affected by the probability theory. Even they sometimes do things the right way.

Do notice that article doesn't give a release date. Microsoft have earlier said that DirectX 11 won't be out for a long time. I think it will be at least 2 years before DirectX 11 is ready.

That's because you have XP, DX10 is Vista exclusive and "mandatory" if you use Vista.

I don't think they require it, but there are some that say 10 is the default one.

Company of Heroes uses DX 10. I'm still using XP, but few of the "higher" graphic detail selections are grayed out and only available to use under DX 10. -----------------------------------

Last I knew you needed Vista to run Halo 2, but meh.
I fought with Vista for a while and now we've reached a stalemate. None of my computers will give in and run SWG again, though.

That is probably your computer's weay of doing you a favour, it's probably for the best!
DirectX 10 is optional for Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Age of Conan, Gears of War, UTIII and a handful of others. I haven't been able to justify taking the performance hit of a Vista upgrade for the benefit of DX10. I'm surprised there's an announcement of DX11 already, wouldn't have expected to hear a word on it for at least another year or two. Here's hoping the next Windows is back on track!

Probably.
Contrary to popular belief, Vista can run the same as XP. There's a default option that sucks up 20% of your RAM or so, but can easily be turned off. That's about the only performance difference from XP. I wouldn't recommend buying it for upgrade, though, because one doesn't need it yet. The reason I bought it was because I was buying a new machine and there wasn't any sense in buying XP when I'd just have to buy Vista down the road for DX10 and beyond.

you would think they would come up with a better name for it at some point
"DirectX 23" would start sounding pretty weird ...

Please, don't even tempt them.
Remember when Microsoft wanted to call DirectX 10 for "Windows Graphics foundation 2.0? "
Microsoft's naming has sucked the last 5 years or so. DirectX is a nice name.
