Hey, I just recently started this game some weeks ago. I'm really enjoying it even though I haven't gotten to train so many skills yet, but it's still fun.
Question is, is it too late for a new player to join now? I mean this game has been around for a long time - maybe EVE 2 comes out soon? Or they make a new game and abandon this one.

EVE is ever evolving and unlike other MMO's young characters have a place and can compete, all it takes it the will to put in effort. Also due to specialisation you can get up to speed in just a few months no problem.

Hello Clasm,
It is not too late to start at all! We have no plans to discontinue support for EVE.

Just started myself, it's never to late to join dude. And I rather take it they keep upgrading this game then making EVE II, hence the Trinity expansion. Find yourself a nice corp that fits your playstyle and enjoy the game

I don't think they will ever whipe this game clean or make eve2. Alot of people and great alliances would hate to see their 5 years hard earned assets and skillpoints crumble because evrybody is playing eve2.

Remember that Eve isn't level-based like most games. Pick something to specialize in and keep your wits about you and you'll find the 'skill gap' that you may hear about on other forums doesn't actually exist.

EVE 2 will never exist, most likely. CCP has several years of plans left to go for EVE as it is, and they've already upgraded the graphics engine once.

What's the point of EVE 2 exactly? The awesome thing about EVE and CCP is that the game is continually updated. The game may be 5ish years old but it's gone through a shitload of expansions that have changed the nature of the game. In effect, we're already playing EVE 2.
They wont abandon EVE until it becomes unprofitable for them. Unlike other MMOs, EVE started small and has been growing every single year since its creation. EVE wont die out for a long time.

I will be honest I was a jumpgate player and was waiting on this game with baited breath. I was thrilled when I got into the beta. Unfortantly when I started the Beta and asked questions on where to find NPCs to fight I was answered with, "Go play Star Craft Newb" which I found pretty funny considering the Beta had just opened up so we were all newbs. I also found the forums populated by trolls and flamers who just flamed anyone that was new. My beta expereince was so bad I never played the game until just a few weeks ago. Bored with dragons and magic I decided to give Eve another chance.
All I can say is the game has changed so much. For the most part the community in Eve is great. I have gone out and done some light PVP and got owned but had a great time. The new player section of the forums is great for getting up to speed and there are a ton of guides to read to help you through every aspect of the game. The game is definalty worth starting now even in the late stages.
The only other game that will be close to eve is Evolutions and it is twitch based joystick combat so it won't be all that close.

I wondered the same thing when I first started EVE a few months ago. I had GMd an endgame guild in WoW for a year and a half, taken a five month break, went back for six months, and then finally once and for all soured on it completely. I spent a few months floating around MMOless until I continued to see EVE advertisements everywhere I went online (they were doing the big Steam promotion).
Having played for all of a few days, late at night, sitting in a hangar, staring at my first new cruiser, listening to some cool tune from the jukebox, it hit me, best game ever. It made me a little disappointed that years ago when I tried EVE way before I tried WoW, that I was not impressed, and only gave it a few days of my time before giving up. It also made me sad that I hadn't been playing EVE for all these years instead of WoW (with the exception of all the great friends and times I did have in that other game).
BUT, the saving grace is that this game is ever evolving, and in a world where you can strike out on your own with little to no need to have years of prior experience or knowledge, you could not ask for a better, more engrossing, substantive MMO as EVE.
Do not let it's long history get you down, history is still being made every day! Maybe you will be a part of that history!

2 Years ago I had a few of the same thoughts as you. I started EVE 3 years too late and was behind in SP from the start. The thing is I soon realized that even low SP characters can take on high SP characters with teamwork and organization. Soon I joined the big boys in 0.0 and learned what it takes to fight with the best from a few of the best corps in EVE. Soon enough I was killing players much older then myself and living it up in 0.0 with good friends such as Chimera Pact, LV, Maelstrom, and my own first alliance Myriad.
Now 2 years later I'm just as capible SP wise as the big boys, and because I kept it up I know as much about EVE as anyone. If you keep fighting you will learn to fight as hard as anybody, and in time SP will cease to be a factor in your fights. You just need to fight that much harder at the start. Trust me. It's worth it. _______________

never. this game goes from strength to strength, and "EVE 2" is better put as "EVE-online after the next # of expansions..."

Incidentally, here are EVE's Expansions, so you can see what they've changed over the years. All of them were free, and the devs have stated that they will continue to provide free expansions and just evolve the current game, rather than make a new one. They've done a graphics upgrade already, so they're trying to keep the game modern.
Also, although nothing's been announced yet, rumors are that CCP is developing a Vampire-related MMO game, rather than the next version of EVE, and that competes with WoW, not with EVE, so pretty much everything points to this game being around and alive for a while.

Hey I just started pretty recently also, and I worried about never being able to catch up to those who've been playing for years. But this game doesn't work like that. Also, I remember being so overwhelmed during my first day... in the newbie help channel I remember seeing someone tell some other new character "don't worry, it gets better". It totally does. Now I'm completely hooked

Yay whiskey!
and give it a month you could be rather specialized in frigates, and by month two, be damn specialized in frigates, interceptor pilots are nice to have, as are the electronic attack ships. Lots of the important skills to flying ships aren't even on your character sheet
by six months in you could have a full mission fit battleship, and have (or be damn close to) the skills for a t2 fit tech 2 cruiser.
specialization is one of the most powerful tools for a new character. I believe this is true in every MMO I have played.

Never too late I joined this game a couple of months back, and I'm very impressed with what I've seen. And looking back and seeing all the improvements and additions they've made, I think I can safely say the future is bright for eve.

If your worry is that they might close the game, there i no reason to do that in the foreseeable future. The subs are rising, and there is much material for expansion that might last for at least another 5 years, more likely ten. No reason to consider closing the game.
If your worry is that you are too late to recover on veteran players, that's not correct as well. Of course you will always have 50mil SP difference with beta players, but the skill system is designed so that bringing a skill from level 0 to level 4 takes much less time than bringing it from level 4 to level 5. Basically, once you have done the basic training of the career you have chosen, the only difference between you and the veterans will be the edge given by those level 5s they have more than you.
Also, most of the skills of such veteran players are limited by the ships they are flying. A veteran player flying a gallente ship won't make much of the SP they have in missiles. The real advantages of veteran players is often the ability to do more than one thing, or fly more than one specialized ship.

Its never too late to start.
The key to becoming competitive with others is to specialize. Focus your efforts on something you'd like to do or fly, and go at it - in time, you'll become very good at it, rivaling those who have played for years.
The edge they'll have on you, however, is that whereas you're pigeon-holed into a single specialty for awhile, they have a much more diverse set of options to play with, maybe multiple classes of ships, different races, as well as a better cash stream (hopefully) to take advantage of this.

This game reminds me a lot of Planetside when it comes to skills/time played. In planetside you can figure out what you want to do and train those skills up in 2-20 hours of play, but it takes you 6 months to max a character out. This doesn't mean you can't compete with someone who has been playing for the last 6 months it just means they can play multiple roles better.
I'm a total noob (been playing less than a week) But I do pretty darn good right now on my cruiser, I just know industry/mining are out of my reach for a long time.
Another thing I notice is if you can find a good corp you can specialize even more and do one role very well in far less than a week. For example a new miner could work with a corp to have their industrial ships carry the ore back to a base for you meaning you can have a good mining setup in a day or two of training and have some protection. You can also run missions and act as close range support to larger ships doing massive damage at longer ranges.
Again I'm a nub so maybe I'm wrong.

In away Trinity was EVE2. But look as the Dev stated before, they aint going to stop support for this game anytime soon. As really its a ever-growing cash cow. Aslong as new people like yourself are singing up in a daily basis. Eve will probably continue past all our lifetime in some form

They're also coming out with Ambulation soon - around next winter probably. This looks like it's going to be a MAJOR expansion, and it's probably going to bring in alot of players from the WOW side - especially females. I know I was hesistant to start EVE at first because I would be a ship. I like having an avatar that I can relate to, kinda put myself in her shoes and imagine what my life would be like if I was living in New Eden as her.
No, Eve isn't going anywhere. It's CCP's baby. And it's probably going to get a lot larger very soon, so congrats on getting in before the boom.

My character's born on date is September 2003, but I took a long break from EVE and am just coming back. I absolutely don't believe in this "skill gap". Yes, my skills are pathetic compared to some other people's, but there are a few issues to keep in mind about EVE (which is what makes it great):
1. Skills give diminishing returns. Per minute trained, Levels 1-3 of a skill give a lot more benefit per minute than levels 4-5 do. So training up your skills to level 4 doesn't take that long, but you're not THAT far behind people with stuff trained to level 5.
2. People come and go. When I arrived in 2003, there were like 3,000 players in EVE. Some of them were real jerks and said none of us would make it because we were too far behind, etc. Now there are regularly 30,000 people online at a time. Don't believe them. People I came in with are now the top dogs in this game. And some of the top dogs in this game are a lot younger than me too. So you can do it!
3. (and this is the dirty secret): "Young" players are often the best players in EVE. People who aren't stuck in their boxes and in their routines are the innovators of this game. The big alliances of yesterday were taken down by upstarts and newcomers who weren't afraid of their blustering and threats. Those with less to lose and more to gain will ALWAYS win.
I predict that in 3 years, most, if not all, of the big alliances today will have been toppled by new alliances of mostly newer players who looked at the situation and decided they could do better or wanted it more. It's how it's always happened!

Honestly I wouldn't really say that so much. True it takes a lot of SP to get 1 skill to 5 for a 5% boost. but train many skills to V and the boost is a lot
Weapon skill: 1.2 to 1.25 Gunnery: .92 to .9 Ship Damage: 1.2 to 1.25 Ship RoF "Minmitar only": .8 to .75 Surgical strike: 1.12 to 1.15 Rapid Firing: .84 to .8 Weapon Specialization: 1 to 1.08
Before: 2.61 Modifier After: 3.59 Modifier
37.7% more damage is huge boon. Also consider that as well as 37.7% more effectiveness of damage you'll get acess to the more effective T2 items, T2 amo, T2 tank, and better PG/CPU to fit bigger better modules. Sorry, but that doesn't really hold up. _______________
