With all the industrial and other non-PvP type corps around I've always wondered if there were and "Protection Racket" type corps preying on them.
You know, something like: "My, that sure is a nice industrial corp you have there, shame if anything was to happen to it. Take my brother Vinnie, he likes to suicide gank hulks and industrial ships. For a nominal monthly fee, say, 100 million isk, I'll be glad to make sure Vinnie's attentions remain elsewhere." (could also be protection from wardecs or pirates, whatever)
I've not heard of such protection schemes, but it has always seemed like such a natural for EVE, so, are they out there, lurking in the shadows?

Edited by: Shanur on 24/07/2008 13:49:35 It's a very viable and popular type of corp. Generally the "cousin Vinnie" remark is delivered by CONCORD in the form of "Cousin Vinnie's corp has declared war on your corporation. Hostilities will begin in 24 hours".
This may or may not be followed by a mail offering to withdraw the dec for a "nominal" fee.
Because of this, they are also often called "bully corps". Read up on the many "My corp was war decced for no reason! We are just peaceful industrialists!" or "griefer corps declares random war on newbie corps!" threads to find out how often this is done .
Threathening beforehand is not done as often because it is often simply more fun to make a carebear part with his hard earned ISK the hard way that involves some pew pew .

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 24/07/2008 14:30:55 Wardec some indy corp that couldn't be arsed to think about PVP/defense, destroy 1 bil worth of ships in a few hours/days (couple of Hulks, haulers and the odd idiot/expensive fit Raven). Talk to the CEO stating that you're having fun and will happily keep this war going for 2 weeks, explaining to him that he'll lose a lot of ships, won't be able to generate income and that half his corp will leave, UNLESS he pays you X amount. Whereby X is anything between 500 mil and 4 bil.
profit.

Not really in the sense that you're thinking. There are two kinds of corps that "kinda" do what you're talking about, but not really at the same time.
1. There are wardec corps that demand you pay them such and such amount of money and they'll leave you alone. Some will even claim it's protection money, but they're only protecting you from themselves. This isn't racketeering at all, it's simply extortion (perfectly acceptable in the game).
2. There are mercenary corps that WILL protect you as long as you pay them and/or the wardec fees. They're doing it as a business though and typically don't DEMAND that you pay them or they will in turn profit off of you. My understanding is that some have TRIED to do this, but they quickly lose their reputation as a respectable merc corp and no one hires them anymore, after which they simply become a wardec corp (see 1).
I think really the closest you'll see to a real old school racketeering scheme going on might be out in 0.0 where you're promised your chunk of space as long as you provide the greater alliance/whatever with certain goods/services/minerals/etc. Most people don't call that racketeering though, just 0.0...

Thanks for the answers! Though somewhat different from what I envisioned, I guess they are out there. *grin*

Just be prepared to take a lot of smack talking. The a good portion of high sec residents chose to be there to avoid conflict in any form. __________________________________________________

While failing to (or refusing to) realize that although high sec offers them some protection, this remains a highly competitive PvP centric game where they still have to defend themselves from the predators that populate EVE. That's alright though. Few if any of those corps survive the consequences of such a wardec and in darwinian fashion go in search of a game that suits their apparently preffered playing style better.
Or as most of the people in such Protection corps would say: Carebear tears are sweet |
