I have almost finished training to Gallente Industrial V.
After that I can train train the Freighter skill if I choose to, but is it worth it? I am not talking about money so much but the fact that it is a total sitting duck. Can this be flown anywhere out of High-sec without getting instantly attacked a killed? There appear to be no fittings on it thus it is defenseless and requires an escort. Can this be flown solo? If not I may have to rethink my current eve career and social status.
Currently I play solo but still significantly interact with other players in order get private courier contracts, trade, etc.
I guess one idea would be to get my corp into some kind of alliance but I am a bit overwhelmed by the research involved to pick the appropriate group to ally with.

A freighter can be used in a number of ways.
1) Solo in high sec. Not too vulnerable, unless you make yourself a target by regularly flying AFK or along a known route with lots of expensive cargo.
2) Solo low-sec - well scouted runs to a low-sec POS or station are possible, but be very careful with the scouting and make sure you don't become well known for flying a particular route at a particular time.
3) In a corp with an escort. Escorts can web you to get you to virtually insta-warp and they can provide protection. Freighters can travel most places with an escort, but need to be well protected and well scouted.
Edit: Unless you have LOTS of stuff to move on a regular basis, multiple trips in a blockade runner or DST might be better - look into Transport ships for your race and see if they're more useful.

That's some of the best / non-bias advice I've seen on this board in a while. Kudos to you..
Hilda; private courier contracts & trade opportunities increase with membership in a well-organized CORP. Just a thought.

I see solo freighters in the Heimatar losec regions on a regular basis. I've not yet scanned them to see what they're carrying (nothing I have would be big enough to loot them if I did kill them anyway).
I'd also suggest that aspiring Freighter pilots check out the EVE-Central Trade Tool. This will help you plan your hauling trips. I expect that life with a Freighter comes down to making 1 ISK profit per 100 ISK unit for a billion units of stuff. ie: you're eking a living by making tiny profits on vast quantities of trade goods.
There's plenty of stuff going on in hisec regions - I'd recommend looking for some friends who live in other regions who can help you keep an eye on the market.
