how do i get rid of the black areas at the top and bottom of my screen

I assume you are playing in widescreen mode.
Hit ESC and go into graphics options, select full screen.
That should fix it.

I dont think hes talking about "windows mode". I think hes talking about when the game is in full screen how you get those "black areas at the top and bottom of my screen" to go away.
Good questions. I dont think we can remove them :(

In the ESC menu, on the Graphics tab, there's a checkbox for Widescreen, make sure it's unchecked.

Yup, thats why I said 'I assume you are playing in widescreen' and didn't say anything about windows mode.
Any rate you it seems you found the options I was talking about.
