What are the pro's and con's and what would be better at t2 eventaully. Im just starting into them so I need to decide.
What has a better range vs damage and what is the starting range and maximum potential range.

Heavy launchers: Long range, effected by guided missile precision. Heavy Assault Launchers: Shorter range. More damage. More PG usage.
Basically choose what you want to do and how much PG you have to spare. then pick the missiles accordingly. _______________

Heavy missiles: Longer range, heavier volley damage, less dps, and easier to fit.
Heavy Assault missiles: Shorter range, smaller volley damage, more dps, and takes up more powergrid to fit.

If you are flying Caldari you can simply skip training for heavy assault missiles, for some unknown reason they aren't Caldari weapons I am told. ------ I'll make a sig later. |

Unless your in delayed 1vs1 fight volley dmg is very important. DPS looks great on paper but alpha/burst dmg is a better way to go in group pvp.

heh. HAMS are caldari weapons. They were added to EVE after the fact. Putting them in somewhere would jsut screw with the current skilltree, that works. _______________

I'm aware, I crusaded for a long time to get them added to EVE, as cruisers did not have a high dps/lower range launcher akin to rockets/torpedoes for a very long time.
I am just bummed they don't fit on Caldari ships and every setup that uses them is completely gimped.
Next post or so should tell me to train for a Sacrilege if I want to use heavy assault launchers effectively, wait and see.

I have to disagree jim, the hamdrake is a very powerful ship, i really like mine. While atm the cerb with hams is outperformed by the drake it may get its chance with the new mwd/ab changes, too.

The problem with HAM's and caldari is they are PG hungy - and our ships have fairly weak PG output. As such fitting those HAM's along with the MWD and Extenders meant you need some VERY high fitting skills and in some cases a fitting mod to make it work. The HAM Drake is a notable exception to most of the rules about Caldari. It CAN fit the PVP gear of MWD, Point and Web, it CAN gank with reasonable output (600 DPS with good skills and faction ammo) and it CAN tank all at the same time.
To me, it would make more sense for the HAM's to be CPU hungry as caldari ships tend to have more CPU than average but then that would make fitting hardners/BCS etc a bit difficult (not to mention a nightmare for Khanid ship pilots).

With an exception for some HAM drake fits, for the most part:
Sac HAM > Cerb HAM HM Cerb > HM Sac --
With regards to the Nighthawk, unless its PG is boosted, you cannot fit a HAM setup decently.
So to answer your question: the ship choses the wepons sytem best suited for it (with the Drake exception). ----
