I have just decided to put Linux on my spare laptop. How would I go around installing EvE?

What more could you possibly want for help? I don't even have Linux and those instructions don't look to terribly difficult.

Edited by: Norwood Franskly on 27/07/2008 20:00:52 This post will probably get moved to the linux forum section, I wrote some instructions out for Fedora a while ago. This will work for most rpm distro's

edit: I realize if your new to linux that may not make a huge amount of sense, first things first do you know what distribution you are using.

Edited by: Norwood Franskly on 27/07/2008 20:20:15 Ok I'm not 100% familiar with that distro but I think it is based around ".deb" packages
go download this file thats the package (A package is like a combination of a windows Zip file and an installer) for eve.
This is the part I'm not 100% familiar with: Double click the .deb file when it when it's finished downloading, this should extract the package. (you will likely be prompted to enter your root password).
If this doesn't work fire up a terminal and type "man apt" (man is short for manual file, basically a list of instructions).
Assuming it extracts correctly run eve by typing "eve" from a terminal window.
Also you may need to install drivers for your graphics card I'm sure theres plenty of info on the net on how to do that (The pc linux os forums or website would be a good place to start).

nothing seems to happen if you open the file and man apt doesn't work either. What linux system is the best to use?

If you by best mean the easiest to use for new linux users Ubuntu is a solid start. Makes life easy.

That was my fault I just check it out on distrowatch pc linux os uses the .rpm format for packages
download this file http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/linux/eve-000066-1.i386.rpm and you should be good to go by dbl clicking it.
You can check out http://distrowatch.com/ for a list of linux distributions. Scroll down a bit and you'll see the top rated distributions down the side.
Ubuntu is famous for being newbie friendly (A little too newbie friendly for my liking but could be just what your after and it is offically supported by CCP).

Download the Fedora installer. Save it to the desktop. Double click on the file. Install it.
After that, look if you can find EVE somewhere on the kde-menu and start it. It should take you through some configuration option. Try to leave most of it as it's suggested as Cedga is rather crappy (imo), and then it should work allright. --- Unless explicitly stated, this post does not represent my alliance, corporation, my own, or any other living organism's view. |

This thread should really be moved to the linux area. This isn't general discussion stuff at all.
But back on topic.
You should try one of the main stream distros like Ubuntu, Redhat or SuSE, you will probably get a lot more useful help.
If you are totally new to unix based systems, then trying to get an advanced 3D online space game working as your first objective *might* be a asking bit much of yourself. --
