Edited by: SULAN BARHIR on 27/07/2008 21:03:58 Yeah yeah I know it's a stupid question in this obesity era- but I can't seem to do it. I'm 24 and 120 lb. I've been working out at the gym 1-2 a week. I want to go more, but I don't know if what I'm doing is right for my situation.
So what I want to know is, what foods I should eat more(other than "junk" foods), how much to exercise, and if there's any other habits(good breakfast, enough sleep, etc.)that I should take up.
Some background: I work 6am-3pm (moderate labour) at a very very fast food restaurant. I usually have bf at about 10. Then have a small lunch/snack around 430. Have dinner around 9pm.
What am I doing wrong here?
PS: My height is 5ft 8" or 172 cm. |

Well. I doubt eve-o is the right place to ask. You should talk to a professional.
But you just have to consume more calories than you use.

If you want to bulk up, eat lots of protein and lift weights, but do HIGH weight and LOW amounts of repetitions.
Keys to building muscle mass.

Yeah. I want information from all possible sources... so why not try here too?
Anyways at work people look at what I eat and they go "that's a lot!" Sometimes I think they're joking.

Edited by: sycokill on 27/07/2008 21:26:21 Hey man i was kinda in the same situation as you, i was 5ft 10" and 145lbs.(yes i know thats 'okay' but i have really dense bones!) I went to the gym like you did and pretty much just did whatever i thought would help but i didnt see much progression. I started to read about nutrition and how you can gain healthy weight which lead me to this >forum<, it basically tells you everything you need to know about how to gain weight and what to eat/not eat.
I suggest looking here first, its basically a simple routine you can do at the gym which really helps gaining weight and also strength (its been used by 1000's of people and proven to work). Then read this which explains how to gain healthy weight.
I hope this benefits you in some way!
edit* the routine helped me gain a constant 10 pounds a month and thats when i was being lazy!

This guy beat me to it. I was going to suggest Rippetoe's and joining a forum like bodybuilding.com. Also, to get a GENERAL idea of how much to eat:
15x your bodyweight is maintenance. Add 500 calories to this, and you get what you should be eating on a bulk cycle. Alternatively, try 20x your bodyweight for bulk calories. Your macronutrients should be about 40% carbs, 40% protein, 20% fats (good fats, such as PB). If your are putting on more than .5-1.5 lbs. per week (perhaps a bit more for your first few weeks of working out) then it is most likely fat, not muscle. After a few months on rippetoe's, switch to a 3-4 day split. Try to get at least 1g protein per pound of bodyweight, or, alternatively, 1g protein per pound of lean bodyweight. Some say as much as 1.5g protein per pound of bodyweight. Anything over that is ridiculous unless you are on roids.
Think I covered most of it...

Drink that chocolate milk if you want to get fat.
Also, the BMI is shit. It does not take into account bodyfat. There are plenty of ripped people who are "obese" on the BMI but 6-10% bodyfat with a six pack and a body most people would kill for.

Heh, I knew that, but I have an average amount of muscle so it applies well for me.

Best dieticians method I know for gaining weight is a "cream diet" but that really only adds fat, nothing more, but it's a fairly quick way to gain weight. An ex-GF of mine once was advised to do one of those. However her doctor then stopped her, as she turned out to be highly Lactose intolerant. Almost nuked her liver in the process.

No you don't. And lets not even start about the bad temper due to feeling like crap either. Her body can basically handle a single small cup of yoghurt a day in terms of lactose load, anything over that is trouble.

Not very healthy, gives a rather large increase in the chance of getting Gout. (only applies if your body has trouble dumping uric acid btw, like mine does.)

That seems quite underweight. Have you always been this weight, or is it something new? If you've always been this skinny, then I wouldn't worry about it too much - just enjoy a mountain sized chocolate fudge cake from time to time. If it's new, you might want to go see your quack. It sounds obvious, but I ignored my sudden weight loss last year and it nearly killed me. __________________________
