Edited by: Xavier Holtzman on 28/07/2008 11:48:05 I've just recently gotten into scan probing and was wondering why a structure might show up on a regular ship directional scan and not show up on a scan probe? I was recently looking for the PoS of an enemy. I went to various systems, and using my scan probes would scan the different systems for control towers and the like. I had all of the different scan probe categories selected except for cosmic anomolies. Despite my scanning, I was unable to locate the PoS. Then one of my corp mates comes in and uses his directional scanner, and he finds it right away. This is a system I had pretty thuroughly scanned with my probes and had come up with nothing. I'm using the recon launchers with the spook, fathom, and snoop probes. Is there a different launcher and probes I should be using to find structures, or is there somthing else that I'm doing wrong?

Are you sure you had 'structure' selected when you were doing your scans & the POS was in range of whatever probes you were using?
Other than that I don't know. I know it's theoretically possible to find POS's with probes but this is the first time I've ever heard of anyone actually attempting it - the directional scanner is faster and free. It's not like you can hide a POS is a safespot. ---

As far as I know, you don't NEED to scan using a probe for a Control Tower, you can warp to a planet, then use the directional scanner. Then you can narrow it down to which moon. Much faster than waiting for a probe to finish scanning.
Also, you might not want to scan for POS's directly. Lots of people use them as supply areas, with lots of ships just parked inside the shields. Scan for those instead, the results are more reliable.

Another question now.....
Is there a reason somone might use a regular scan probe launcher as opposed to a recon launcher? Does the regular scan probe launcher do somthing that the recon doesn't do?

The regular launcher is mainly used for exploration, it can fit the big probes that are needed. A scan using a normal launcher has a scan time of 600sec before bonuses. A recon has 120sec scan time (the probes needed for ship scanning are tiny compared to those for exploration).
People who do exploration scanning have the patience of a saint. Generally. Mostly. Ish. To scan for ships or the like, use a recon, to explore and find hidden asteroid belts/hacking sites/moon scans, use a "normal" scan probe launcher.

The scan and recon launchers are used for different tasks. The recon launcher is used to scan ships while the scan probe launcher is used for exploration. They use separate kinds of probes too so don't waste any snoops trying to get some archeology site or something. Typing "probe" in the market search and doing a few show info will clarify all of this.
