[ 2008.07.28 16:30:12 ] (notify) Your attempt to target *** failed.
Anyone else been getting these a hell of a lot recently? What causes it?
I start locking someone and then 5 seconds or so into the lock it comes up with that kind of notification, even though they are still there and I haven't been jammed or damped? I try locking again, same thing. Then they warp off because I've haven't been able to put a point on them .
Has CCP introduced a stealthy patch making locking chance based?

There's a period of invulnerability from targeting in some places, such as during station undock.

Usually this happens when the ship is in a jump or when the player is lagging. It helps prevent the ol' you're dead while you're lagged out. Best bet is to hold control and spam the target with your point ready (blinking). Sometimes you still can't get them, but such is life.

This was at an acceleration gate, after I had come out of warp and the other person had been sitting there camping it for at least 15 mins. So undocked invuln, etc... doesn't count.
I've just noticed this start to happen in the last few days randomly. Pretty sure I'm not playing differently, and my connection hasn't changed.
Weird.

Maybe they'd been sitting by the gate, pondering tactics or something, and upon seeing a visitor (I asume this was lowsec), immediately hit the warp option on the gate.
As the warp is created by the acceleration gate, and not their warp drive, maybe they're invulnerable once it's active?

Try it, a nasty surprise awaits you - accel gate warp is still subject to scrambling.

There is a bug here, a bug thats been around for over 2 years. Not saying for sure that the OP hit this, we dont have all the details, but i've had expirence with this.
Me and a friend are out trolling for ganks. I jump through a gate....he stays behing. I load the next system in time to see a easy target jump out. I alert my friend, who prepares the tackle, and i run back to the gate. I tell him to wait for me, as I am a killmail *****.
he tackled the target, i jump through. on the other side, I try to target the enemy....and I cannot. no matter how many times I try, or how long we wait, I cannot target him. All the while the hostile is slowboating back to the gate, webbed, but by now getting close. So I finally say, forget it, kill it. My friend does so, and I fail to get on the KM.
This bug is rare, Ive only seen it a handful of time, but it does happen.
Originally by: Meridius Dex I could actually fit a Thorax WITH LASERS and get better DPS, better speed, better tank and - wait for it - better cap stability

Edited by: Black Scorpio on 28/07/2008 20:15:42 I've gotten this on a few NPCs also in the past 1-2 weeks, more so than ever. You start targetting a frig for example and your targetting stops with that same message. I am not dampened or scrammed, the target is well in range and have not reached max number of targets or anything.
Weird indeed...
PS: Ahh Thea beat me to it :)

Which is why you don't sit at the entry point at an accel gate if your not camping it. Just align with the gate and move down the length until your well past the end. With the huge activation range you can still be in warp range but well out of range of any kind of warp disruptor even if its a recon ship boosted one.
