Hiya, I broke my nose just before new years (you can probably guess how..) anyway. I'm slighty curious. My nose isn't 100% straight anymore (duh) but it's like 90% you can't notice it unless you look at my nose at an angle in front of me (under my nose looking up towards my forehead).
Theres one more thing... and this is my question. The place where the nose broke, kinda swelled up, (like a ball shaped swelling around the crack).
When the bone repairs, does it add a few layers? over the top jsut to make sure, because i can swear the area around where my nose broke is slighty bigger and not as satraight and plane, more bumpy like.
is this what happens when you break your nose or am I jsut like uber paranoid, cause I'm sure whever ever I look at my nose in an old photo and look in the mirror my nose seems slighty bigger where it broke.
anyone? lol
HAhaHAhaHAh I make sure there are enough paperclips on hand... |

well it sounds like that since you broke your nose before new years it is probably allready near done repairing itself.
did you go to the er and get it fixed after it happened, i'm a bit of a lover rather than a fighter myself but i'm pretty sure you get this retainer to keep the bone growing together nicely, and you have to wear it for quite a while cause a broken nose is not a little thing and it takes a while for it to grow straight back together..
thing is well i don't know if they break it up again when they do plastic surgery nose corrections, they probably do, but i do know that it's not something you just do in a controlled manner, and that its much easier to rebreak it and align it correctly after its happened, cause when it's allreay regrown it takes a bit of force to actually break it again.
i'd seriously pick up the phone and talk to a plastic surgeon or an ER to hear what their take is on it and what they can do, but as far as i assess the situation, it being over 7 months since you broke it, that's the kind of thing we are talking about now if you want your nose straight again.
and don't try anything stupid as in breaking the nose yourself, leave it to a professional this time around or you might just mess it up more.
but as it sounds like a slightly abnormal/crooked regrowth you should probably have it checked out weither you want to do anything about it or just want to keep it as it is.

Edited by: Nomakai Delateriel on 28/07/2008 23:34:59 Bone does get a bit thicker when it heals, though usually it's not all that noticable. However, the nose consists mostly of cartilage, and if you've damaged the cartilage and caused perichondrium separation (separation of the thin membrane that provides the cartilage with nutrients) it never heals right (unless treated within a few days after the damage) and cartilage is replaced/covered with bumpy scar tissue.
The most common form of perichondrium separation is Wrestler's Ear, but it can happen to any type of cartilage.
At this time the only way of correcting it would be through a plastic surgeon. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |

Well, the cartilage was definitely snapped, but I don't have all that much experience looking at cranial X-rays so I can't say how much the underlying bonestructure was damaged.
Looks pretty smashed to my untrained eyes, but I don't know what the nasal cavity is supposed to look like unsmashed (especially not when the x-rays have such a low exposure, usually skull x-rays have a much higher exposure and the thin facial bones are pretty much invisible). ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. ah k, the doctors were gonna send me to a plastic surgeon if their decision was of that (if my nose was smashed up worse or whatever). however they looked at the x-rays and said wasn't needed (i'm guessing if my nose looked really screwed up) I live in sweden btw lol

A mass of tissue forms around a break in a bone, it is called callus and in the case of breaking your nose the bump is prominent. A retainer would have helped but now that time has passed you should see a plastic surgeon.

about callus, I'm pretty sure I don't have it due to the fact that I have callus on my fingertips(I'm a guitarist), so I know how it feels and how thick it seems.
The bump that I have is bone solid, skin around is just as thin as anywhere else on my nose. ________________________ I'M POOR
