1. The matrix 2. Die hard 3 3. Lord of the rings 4. the fifth element (severely underrated movie) 5. Lion king ( the only movie that ever made me cry )
The lord of the rings would have been higher, if it was not for the worst and most annoying ending ever in movie history, all 8 or more hours of the 3 movies almost ruined by the 20-30 minutes of painful, hugging, laughing and crying at the end. It should have ended as they entered the shire.
Chewing on the veld since 2007.

Dunno what¦s worse. Fact that jackass & Armageddon are in there or the Matrix I and Aliens I&II aren¦t. Only cool Pirates flic is the 1st, like with Matrix the rest suck.
Lord of the Rings gives me hope for your future, but only if you include: I-III SPECIAL EDITIONS
Damn, have to watch that Simpsons flic. As I haven¦t, I¦ll put Southpark Bigger Longer Uncutt there. _ Mal-`Appears we got here just in a nick of time. What does that make us?¦ Zoe-¦Big damn heroes sir.¦ Mal-¦Aint we just.¦ |

In no particular order... and split in two separate categories (for me, Sci-Fi easily trumps most non Sci-Fi, so I have to class them separately)...
SCI-FI
Total Recall The Fifth Element Terminator 2 The Empire Strikes Back (or better said the entire ORIGINAL Star Wars trilogy) Back to the Future (all of them, actually)
MOSTLY FANTASY, NOT SO SCI-FICTION
Devil's Advocate Raiders of the Lost Ark (plus Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, didn't like Temple of Doom much) What Women Want Return of the King (but the other LOTR ones too) The Truman Show
COMPLETELY NOT SCI-FI NOR FANTASY (just plain old fiction)
As Good as It Gets The Silence of the Lambs Gladiator Something's Gotta Give Thank You for Smoking

I simply cant name my favorite 5, too narrow of a list. But i can also say movies i thought were INCREDIBLE when i first saw them, but didn't quite last the test of time with me:
Armageddon All the Matrix movies All the lord of the ring movies The 'new' Starwars movies
Jury is still out on the new batman. It sure gave me one hell of a good first impression.

Armageddon? I've got to ask you OP (and others who've mentioned it as a "great"), and I'm not doing this to get a rise out of you, I'd really like to know.
What did you like so much about that? I'd actually have it down as one of my worst films of all time. It's just frankly awful. (We're talking about the Bruce Willis asteroid-hopping-while-saving-the-girl-romance flick are we, or is there another one?)
My list is very fluid. I might have a genre that I like more than others at a given time, so films come and go. However, here's my best effort at the moment:
1) Saving Private Ryan 2) The Terminator 3) The Lives Of Others 4) The Breakfast Club (bit dated now, I'll admit) 5) Schindler's List
Edit: Gneeznow ... I like your list! I could easily have included Das Boot, Downfall, Fargo or Leon on my list. Particularly Fargo, which is an underrated classic.

Edited by: Mangala Solaris on 31/07/2008 08:09:04 Hard to do a top 5 when I have so many movies I enjoy, so I'll just list until I cant list no more (or my bacon is done :D). Also no particular order will be used.
Blade Runner (Final Cut); Empire of the Sun; Batman Begins; The Warriors; The Shawshank Redemption; The Hunt for Red October; The Doors; True Romance (Directors Cut); The Truman Show; The Fifth Element; Kingdom of Heaven; Gladiator; Fight Club; Zulu; Reservoir Dogs; The Great Escape; The Italian Job; Aliens (Directors Cut); The Godfather 1,2 & 3; Schindlers List; The Life of Brian; Monty Python & The Holy Grail; Spy Game; Jurassic Park; The Abyss (Special Edition); Serpico; Heat; Goodfella's; Apocalypse Now (Redux); The Goonies; Lawrence of Arabia; Garden State; Clerks; High Fidelity;
And thats just a small part, as you can see a varied list - and one that is very hard for me personally to make a top 5 out of. -------

In no particular order, just as I think of them:
Lord of the Rings Star Wars (Originals, THERE IS NO PREQUELS) Star Trek: First Contact Spaceballs Monty Python and the Holy Grail Stargate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Pirates of the Caribbean Idiocrasy Ghost in the Shell Metal Gear Solid 4 (Actually I've never watched-err, played it, and probably never will) Stardust Battlestar Galactica (it's not a movie but I don't care! It's great!)

Edited by: Calleb on 31/07/2008 08:53:00 Well it's not easy to post films that you really enjoyed or think are your all time best as often the film you have just seen you think is one of the best.
However there are films that the first time I saw them I was completely blown away (and often its not films I would choose to watch) Off the top of my head films that had such an impact to me are
Alien (saw this one night late when i was about 15 on TV for the first time - superb) Life of brian (didnt realise a film could be so funny) Shawshank redemption (a bit obvious and cheesy - but the first time I saw it I knew nothing about it and I was hooked) O'brother where art thou Fargo (I don't know what it is about a cohen brothers film that draws me in every time) Close encounters (conspiricies fill the movie before conspiricies were popular) The ring (original jap version - I was completely spellbound by the story)

Damn. Too many. Off the top of my head...
12 Monkeys, Brazil, I am Legend, Metropolis, Children of Men, Sunshine..
So many others but those are the key winners recently.

These are people I like. Got to say I loved: American beauty American psycho (I'm the only person I know who understood that character) Fight club Hellraiser (just the first one, for reasons again, most people don't understand) Bad Lieutenant (Great acting)
Those are my screw the norm kinda films, other stuff you gotta love ('cos I say so):
The good, the bad and the ugly No country for old men (becuase to me its a modern remake of tgtbatu) V for vendetta (books A LOT better) 300 (because it makes me feel like your being told the story as if it were 3000 years ago)(troy can suck my balls for being shit [just ask and I'll explain more])
Well theres loads more I love but can't think of them atm. I hate more films lol, and more than that I hate the people who like the films I hate but only if they can't justify themselves liking it. Thus:
Anybody who has hellboy in their list can go die horribly for all I care, hellboy was a dreadful childrens film with about nothing original going on in it at all, it just blurred into other shit like van hellsing and the league of extrodinary gentlemen.
