I was thinking a drone which you could load with goods and order to drop-off at a given station within your current system and return to your ship would be very useful.
The quantity of cargo which can be carried by a drone should be pretty limited to start with but perhaps increase the cargo capacity with a new Cargo Drone skill. Level 5 of which is almost able to keep up with a Retrieve mining (but not completely).
Also, drone warp speed should probably be very low.
Pilot Benefit: 1) Ability to drop of cargo without docking (useful for miners) 2) Multiple drones means multiple drop off points (useful for couriers)
Pilot Downsides: 1) Less room for combat drones used for defense. 2) The drones are easy to spot and follow, a pilot need only wait outside a station, watch which direction a drone goes in to know that something is in belt 1 or around planet 3 etc.
Possible Further Developments: 1) different sized drones a) small 5m drone size - limited cargo space, useful for a mining frig for newbies b) medium 10m drone size - slight more cargo space etc.
I think the biggest problem is possible exploitation by macro miners, which this idea is definitely not supposed to help, I guess the drones should require user interaction to load with cargo and be given a destination within the current system - i.e. no auto reload and launch options etc.
Any thoughts?

One question: do you like macro miners?

lol - no, thats why I specifically said it should require user interaction to send out the drones each time and is also why I said that the drones shouldn't be able to quite keep up with a Retrieve's mining rate.
Macros tend to use bigger mining ships than the retriever and so should be at even more of a disadvantage as the drones wont be able to keep up with the mining rate.
I was really looking for a way to speed up mining and make it less mundane - i.e. having to interact with the drone once every minute - but when I was writing it up it occured to me that pilots in other roles might find it useful, couriers, ratter returning modules and salvage etc so wrote the original idea in a more generic terms.

At first... I thought this was going to be about Drones looting wrecks for you. Since they all have a listed cargo capacity, but the only ones to use it are Miners.
Then I saw that you just want to make automated Haulers so you don't have to rely on a mining group or Secure Cans while you retrieve your own Hauler.
This is only going to help out macro miners, and give everyone more grounds to argue "Eve is a Multiplayer game" when you are trying to facilitate your total independance while mining.
Just make friends with an Indy pilot, or join a mining Corp that will haul for you. --- Don't take my ranting personally. I may just be arguing the topic, unless you're saying something stupid, and then I mean every word. "Players don't want Variety. They want THE BEST" |

sorry dude. a) i, as a hulk pilot, would find the pitiful hauling capacity of your drones pointless.
b) mining requires interaction as well, yet macros can do that. they will write a macro to run the drones.
c) eve is multiplayer. i solo mine myself, and i accept that when i do it, i make very little money. if you are worried about can flippers, dont can mine, shuttle run. - PvPers always say "GB2WoW". the message is that EVE is hard, and people just need to deal with it. wasn't it funny how when nano's started making it hard for *them*, that all went out the window? |
