I finally seem to have figured out a way to mess around with EveMon and EFT while out and about on my iPhone.
Using a new application in the iPhone Apps Store called Mocha VNC, I am able to run RealVNC (or TightVnc) on my home computer and remote control my computer from my iPhone. The full version of Mocha VNC (I think it was $4.99USD) allows you do mouse right clicks as well as use keys such as control and alt. I found right clicking very useful for remote controlling EFT; especially for things like loading scripts into modules.
If you are worried about security running VNC on your home computer, I run it in a virtual machine and it works like a charm!

To stay secure I allow only local access to all remote services, and access them through a tunnel.
Sage for Apple. -

Kelli - are you using the VNC client to access your home computer from within your network, or from an external connection to the internet? My understanding of the VNC protocol (and my experience with this app) was that it was made to work within a network, accessing internal IP addresses. I'd love a [secure] app for the iPhone that would allow me to access my desktop from an external internet connection.
What has been your experience?

I'm doing it remotely while on the 3G/Edge network thus an external IP address. I've used VNC for years to access my computer remotely and have never had a security breach. I use a funky port number (i.e. not the standard VNC port) and a fairly strong password.
I was stunned how quickly the iPhone updated when messing with EveMon or EFT. I do, however, have my screen resolution set to 1024x768 in the virtual machine to make refreshes faster. I'll experiment next with 800x600 as that might speed it up even more.
Overall... I'm VERY happy with this setup and makes shopping with my wife at Nordstrom much more tolerable.

Edited by: Arcon Telf on 01/08/2008 17:53:52 I got it all worked out so I can access my computer from my iPhone from anywhere. Port-forwarding and whatnot...
Here's the sad part
The Mocha VNC client does not have built-in SSH support. The app store has no terminal app for the iPhone to allow the manual creation of SSH tunnels. There's also no true SSH utilities on the App store either.
From my research, people are universally annoyed with all 3 of the above. Let's hope there's some SSH in the pipeline (tee hee, pun?) soon.

What you do is pick up your iPhone and call a local PC retailer, order a normal PC and have it delivered to your home. Now install EVEmon and EFT and presto; you made them work using your iPhone.

If you jailbreak your phone, you can get SSH utilities and terminal emulators on there. It's a pretty easy process for both the 1.0 and 2.0 software. If things go haywire (haven't on mine after having had the phone jailbroken since there was a jailbreak to have) you can always restore to the Apple default software...

Obvious troll is obvious, but I'll bite. I actually don't need to do that, because I can run windows natively on my Mac, thanks very much. Actually, if CCP doesn't get on the ball with the Mac client, I may do just that.

no need for SSH, use VPN tunnel to get to your computer. Use http://www.smoothwall.org/, http://www.dd-wrt.com/ or other similar OS/Firmware for your router and you have it there at your fingertips.
Hell if you do that, route ALL traffic through the VPN when ever you are using a public wifi access point.. I do this to encrypt all my traffic...

i have dual boot macbook pro and lately i've stopped booting into windows. the mac client is now stable enough that i don't need to, only some texture corruption every few days - -

how it normally works. iphone > pub wifi > internet cloud
using a VPN you will get iphone > pub wifi > home VPN server > internet cloud
the stuff in bold would be encrypted..
if you are hosting your own VNC server you would get this iphone > pub wifi > home VPN server > internal network > VNC server
so any one sniffing traffic on the public wifi would not get to see your traffic.
