Edited by: Green Halo on 31/07/2008 22:32:38 I've been living with a brand new PC for about 3 months now. However, I never got around to upgrading my monitor so it's still hooked up to my old 17' LG .
Anyhoo, now is the time for a new one! I've spent a few days looking around some websites like newegg and bestbuy (just to compare), but I don't know what to really look for as far as it goes with "specs" for monitors. So I'm asking for some advice...
What I'm looking for: - 22 Inch max size. - A very decent picture quality. - Possible component cable ports integrated into it; I found this puppy but it's overdone with the speakers/bass...

Why no widescreen? If you want a decent non widescreen monitor it will be a rather hard search. Besides, widescreens are awesome _________________________________________________________

Well, like I said, I don't know much about monitor specs. If widescreen is better, then widescreen it is

Yeah, you're going to have a beast of a time trying to find a 22 inch screen that's not widescreen.
Anywho, I use a CIBOX C2201 which has both DVI and VGA inputs. Truth be told, there's absolutely no difference in image quality between the two, it's just nice to know you have it. Anyway, it's 22 inch widescreen, 1680x1050 pixels, and the picture quality is awesome. It cost me about ú150 ($300). __________________________

If you want decent image quality DVI is the only way to go regarding connectivity. It's just a bad idea to convert a digital source to analog just to convert it back to digital again in the display.
Now as for the screen size: 20" square is 1600x1200 20-22" widescreen is 1680x1050 24" widescreen is 1920x1200
I know you said 22" was max, but you should really reconsider the 24" as an option as the extra screen space makes a huge difference in EVE.
I like Dell screens myself, got a 2001FP (20" 1600x1200) and a 3007WFP (30" 2560x1600).

I have an Acer 22" (al2223w). It's a huge upgrade from a 17". It's also cheap. It looks decent.
My main monitor is a Samsung 245BW (24"). It's *really* nice for a TN panel. And fairly cheap.
The Samsung panel makes the Acer look like crap.
If you're just looking for a decent 22", look at Samsung's or LG's. If you're really strapped, Acer is fine, though the panels aren't the best.
That Asus is *really* expensive for a 22" TN panel (2ms gtg tells me it's TN even though it claims 16.7 million colours). Of course, if it is a non-TN panel, it may be worth the price increase if you're very demanding about colour correctness; however, for 400$, I'd get a 24" Samsung... the resolution increase is significant over a 22").

Go Samsung. I would suggest this. Better for gaming than Dell imo, dell seems to be better if you are just planning general office/word processing or whatever though. _________________________________________________________

If you take your gaming seriously you will want to find a monitor with a low response time from 1ms to 5ms and work around that. The lower the better. _______

I've yet to see anything that shows that once you are under 7-8 m/s, it really makes a difference. I've certainly never seen any. _________________________________________________________

Acer has some nice 4:3 aspect ratio larger monitors, I use a 20" one myself. So maybe that's worth looking at.

Almost correct.
There is one 22" 1920x1200 display out there. The Lenovo L220x (they are a long established company whose stuff is mostly rebranded for IBM). That essentially gives it the same screen space as a 24" but in a 22". Also, nearly all 22" and down displays are TN panels. This one is an S-PVA panel (superior in many ways to a TN screen).
After a month of banging my head against the wall, learning all the intricacies of flat panel displays, and reading dozens of reviews I was at my wit's end. Almost no panel had everything I wanted it too. Thank Og for the L220x. While it did not quite match everything I wanted it came the closest by far and I love it. Picture quality is top notch. At 6ms it is easily fast enough to play games (I have not seen ghosting and I have looked nor have I seen any reviews report ghosting). Color depth is fantastic (if you are in to photo editing this is very important and you want to stay away from TN panels). Even the stand it great as it swivels, height adjustable and rotates for a portrait view.
I only wish it had an HDMI port but it is not crucial for my needs and can live without it. The major complaint I see about it is its pedestrian looks (fine by me) and it gets hot (noticeably warm). Also pricey at a list of $500 (can be had for $460).
If the OP wants me to expound at length on all the issues affecting (afflicting?) flat panels let me know. Or save yourself the trouble and go get this display. From the link above the reviewer's final thoughts:
Quote: What Lenovo gave up in features with the L220X, they compensated for in image quality, in spades. The L220X is, without a doubt, the sharpest and most accurate monitor I have ever seen. It's suitable for any type of work, making it capable of handling any task you throw at it.
<snip>
The only person I couldn't recommend this display to is someone in need of extra video ports. As aforementioned earlier in the review, the pixel pitch is hardly a problem for me personally, and I don't think anyone should discount it without seeing it in person especially if you're considering a 24" panel.
Admittedly, the monitor has its potential pitfalls, even in its image quality, making it far from perfect. But, it's able to pack a huge resolution in a relatively small viewing area. Its build quality is almost unparalleled, and even taking its (few) image quality weaknesses into account, remains my favorite monitor yet.

I had a CRT and was very reluctant to let it go. CRTs beat LCDs in most respects, particularly gaming. But, there really are no widescreen CRTs and once past 19" they are rather mammoth on a desktop (and 19" is rather large). So it's a tradeoff.

Yep, you are missing out. But remember the higher the resolution the more powerful the video card needs to be. If your video card is not up to running 1680x1050 or higher then you may well get a better experience out of 1280x1024.

Thanks for the input guys. After giving it some thought and spending a few more hours looking at the specs of some monitors, I've decided to wait and save a little more for a 24'.
However I haven't found another monitor like the one I first posted. One with built in component cable ports (for consoles and etc). Are they not popular or is there a better way for sharing a monitor with a PC and console?
--
(offtopic) As for that monitor Jora'h; A few months ago IBM replaced all my stores registers (I work at a commissary). Every single one of them have this monitor as a heads up display for the customers. I'd have to measure the size, but it's almost exactly the same thing. I dunno, I just thought that was pretty interesting/funny.

FYI: Lenovo makes a whole range of monitors from cheap to expensive. I seriously doubt the store popped for the L220x which is a rather pricey and highend display. You just would not need that kind of performance at a register.
As for consoles plugging in to the display many monitors have connections to accommodate them. Just need to be clear on what connections you need and then see the display has a connector for it.
However, I would wonder how good a console would look on a display that has a 1920x1220 (24" and up) resolution. Can consoles generate graphics at that resolution? Because if they can't then the display will be working at a lower than native resolution and usually that looks like shit. (Genuinely asking as I have not tried).
Oh, and about saving for the 24" remember the Lenovo I mentioned has the same screen real estate as a 24" monitor does but in a 22" body. One upside to this is that means the graphics are sharper (the 22" in this case has a smaller pixel pitch (each pixel is smaller which = sharper image).

Edited by: Forum Warrior on 02/08/2008 02:17:01 I just recently bought a HP w2207h 22" widescreen and am really satisfied with it so far. I'll probably never again buy one without glossy surface. It looks so much better, nicer colours and overall "sharper" display it seems - if your lighting situation is favourable (no window at your back, things like that). It has a swivel function, has USB ports and speakers (at the rear, you don't see them, but I don't use them so no idea if they're any good), is height-adjustable, and costs around 250Ç. Also, it looks nice. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824176091&Tpk=w2207h Go Google some reviews, NOW
fakeedit: If certain someones feel the need to make a link of this URL I'm hereby preempting my answer to that consisting of JUST GET LINKIFICATION FOR ****S SAKE.
realedit, lulz: Should probably have read that "wait for 24 inch", doh. Just keep in mind that you will have to run it at a higher resolution as well, which obviously will need somewhat better hardware to run smoothly (which was one of the reasons why I bought a 22").

Bet you are running at too high a resolution and/or your screen refresh rate is set too low. At 60Hz on a CRT it will give you headaches. Keep it over 75hz and I think you'd notice a difference.
