I am not sure, but this more then likely has been posted before.
As space is a (virtual) vacuum, why do the ships 'bank' when turning around? This is a characteristic of planes flying through air. I realise the games physics percieves the ship in a fluid. Have you ever seen real objects in space, they use attitude thrusters and the like so that they piviot on themselves. The can also 'strafe'. The ship would just rotate around the 3 axis' till it reached the correct position. 'Correct' physics also allows for a thruster animation i.e. jets of exhaust crystals as your ship turns. (not such a good thing for the devs)
Also to slow the ship, it could be rotated 180 degrees so that the rockets would be pointed in the direction of travel. This again is much more realisic for a zero gravity environment. Or have engines on both sides of the ship so it doesn't need to turn. Additionally when the ship reaches 'crusing' speed the engines can turn off and the ship should continue until a reverse thrust has been applied.
Problems with updating the physics however are that collisions would need updating, so that mass would have an effect. For example little ship hits big ship, big ship continues (slowed slightly), little ship is 'pushed' out of the way. Meaning trying to align in a swarm of drones will be much easier.
On a side note, we have a velocity counter for sublight speed, what about the same for warp? The ability to slow down warp speed or even measure it has many uses. It firstly allows smaller ships to travel faster in warp, and hence arrive before a larger ship that left earlier. It could allow a convoy to arrive at the same time, if your being followed take your time so that they get ahead of you etc. Also what about the ability to just warp for 20 second in the direction your pointing. Sure it makes for easy running away, and the devs would have to figure out a way to keep in system (unable to get past the stars Van Halen belts perhaps), but it would be nice to have greater control over the ships systems.
Now into relms of the 'it would be nice but so much work for the devs', what about being able to plot a course (in both warp and sublight). So that you could 'plot' a course around a group of asteroids? Not really useful but still, personally I would like it. The difficulty with this is plotting a course in 3D space is diffuclt in a 2D view. Homeworld 2 has a great example of 3D routes being ploted and this idea would be great if it could be impletmented.

welcome to EVE!
its just 'not the game you are describing'. The physics here are quasi at best (just bonkers / broken and simplified to keep the game fun)
Could be fun to see ships approaching gates in all different rotations as well.

I realise that this isn't how the game works, however as this the forum for features and ideas we would like to see, I am adding my two cents.
Also the lack of up and down in this scenario would lead to some interesting views |

yah not trying to 'poo poo' your input. Its been covered a number of times in the last 5 years though.

This. Have a read of those threads.

Edited by: Xindi Kraid on 01/08/2008 10:08:28 Even in space banking makes sense. Its the same reason as why high speed turns on highways and train tracks etc are banked. G forces.
When going through a turn centripetal force pulls the occupants sideways, by banking the vehicle the force is balance out by moving the vehicles orientation towards that of the force to where centripetal force pulls you to the floor instead of the wall thus making the force of the turn less awkward. Now obviously EvE ships would have inertia dampeners but banking the craft would still reduce the load they have to take.
Also there is the possibility that the spacecraft's center of gravity is towards the ventral half of the craft which would cause those same forces to pull the craft into the bank in the same way it would shift passengers and cargo around.
The whole spaceship handling like a boat kinda throws me off but I've gotten used to it since Sci Fi authors seem to enjoy showing this kind of nonsense ==== As for the warp thing I think variable speed warp is and have often wanted to stop the ship after realizing I set the ship to the wrong destination.
As for plotting a course the Homeworld system would be nice but as fo direct piloting its fin since it is basically angling your camera in the direction of travel and saying "go that direction" --Bird of Prey: Forum God

I think it's easiest to realize that Eve works a lot more like seafaring boats that it does like deep space vessels.
Constant propulsion to maintain speed isn't necessary in space... but it is in water... and plus it looks cool to see jet trails behind the ship.
Banking a ship is necessary, given the momentum your fighting to change direction... plus it looks cool in combat.
Ships constantly maintaining an "Up" and "Down" orientation saves players from motion sickness and total confusion while trying to coordinate attacks... plus it looks cool.
Basically... if you want "real world space physics" then go play at NASA. If you want to yell "Yar!" on Local chat, and pretend to be a pilot of a spaceship 40,000 years in the future... then keep playing Eve. --- Don't take my ranting personally. I may just be arguing the topic, unless you're saying something stupid, and then I mean every word. "Players don't want Variety. They want THE BEST" |
