I don't know that black would take actually less bits than white... depends on the saved format I guess.
Mine was done with old Photoshop 6 and then optimized with Ulead Smartsaver.
Yours looks good, but looks like you need to fix the left eye. Capture portrait does the same thing with all mine, removes the left eye so the background show through.
Easy way to fix it is grab the right eye and paste it as a layer under the face, then erase the left eye hole till it shows through. Do a little free transforming one the pasted eyeball till it fills the hole completely.

Irfanview and Paint for mine. i don't likem all them bells and whistles.
as for limiting the size, you can use Irfanview to step down the quality setting on jpg saves, and it limits the size of the final file without impacting on over image quality that much. easy as pie.

btw, you can use the screenshot feature while having your Character Sheet open to grab a clean shot of your character's mug, complete with both eyes. since you're using it for a tiny pic like your sig, it doesn't need to be as detailed as your generated character portrait.

I wonder why capture portrait doesn't work for some, though. I used it for my sig (even though I had the celes template I did the rest myself, such as cutting my ugly face and the ships in there).

It's really weird, everything renders perfectly, just the left eye isn't there... can see right through to the background, maybe graphics card? ATI card here...

The Eye missing thing is just a general bug. I have it as well and im not using an ATI
Youll just have to get down there and finnish the job by copying your right eye onto the left eye location.

Because its a 512x512 Low Quality JPG. Using the ingame portrait option gives you a 1024x1024 Full Quality BMP. You prolly wont see much of a diffrence one you shrink them down to signature size but cutting people out of their background is a lot easier with the big version.
And its not like replacing the left eye is hard or antyhing ---------------------------

I use Corel v11.
The jpg's used in the forums are fine for creating sigs. Secret to removing backgrounds from portraits is to use a brush with a feathered edge - it should only take a couple of seconds and need not be exact. You can then cheat a little and make the edges slightly transparent.
Use the same type of brush to replace missing eyes - using the clone tool (stamp in PS) from the other eye. A couple of clicks will do it. By the time it's sig size - there is no way of telling.
