I fully support this initiative.
It's been shown over and over again that powerful images have a far greater impact on humans than just words. We viscerally react to this sort of thing: heh, we're now even talking about this issue on some internet spaceships forums just because you saw that picture.
That's precisely why the government invented Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty in their campaign to warn kids about the dangers of hard drugs. There are still plenty of morons who will go on and light up their crack pipes regardless of those ghouls, but then, once you realize there are people out there who will willingly chop their genitals for the sake of some internet video, you conclude there are people for anything and everything you can (and cannot) possibly imagine.
I can see how you, as a committed smoker, may feel insulted to see those images now on your cigarette packs, but you're probably a lost cause anyway - I can imagine this being more effective on casual or newbie smokers. Go on smoking if you will, that's your prerogative, but lets not bury our heads in the sand and sugar-coat the issue, tobacco does some pretty nasty things to your insides.

I never blow smoke at people and infact always try to blow it away from them. further then that if you don't like the smell that bad, the don't stand near me.
Seriosuly though, have you not all figured out yet that if you're going to get cancer you're going to get cancer. Be it from eating oranges, breathing in exhaust fumes, smoking or any number of other thngs.

Just go outside and take a deep breath of not so fresh air. The number of pollutants in it from so many different sources means it is probably less healthy than smoking. At least you know what you are breathing in when you smoke, it's not quite the same story when you breathe in the air that surrounds you every day.
As for Cancer and smoking... My mother never smoked in her life and died of cancer of the lungs aged 68. My grandmother died of natural causes aged 92 and smoked 40 a day and had been smoking since she was 12.
My attitude is and always has been, when are they going to start linking suicide and alien abductions to the effects of smoking? I guess when that happens, we'll see new warnings on packets... "Warning Smoking makes you more likely to be abducted by aliens".
Governments are hypocrites. They ban smoking in public places but make millions of pounds a day from taxes on tobacco. Just remember before you non smokers get on your high horses about smoking, we buy our cigarettes and pay a large amount of tax. If we didn't, you would be taxed higher because the gov't isn't going to lose that income and would do all in their power to regain it by taxing something else higher instead. The UK gov't already hiked taxes in a bid to regain the lost revenue that the smoking ban would cause. My bet is that after a short while when the expected figures do give up, they will hike taxes again because people have short memories, (and too many weeners that won't stand up against the gov't and say you are taxing us far too much), so the gov't can use this same excuse again and again and again. You non smokers are going to pay dearly for that little bit of legislation that stopped me lighting up in a public place because you are going to pay the taxes that the smokers have been paying for you for years I may have to stand in the cold and rain to smoke my cigarette but I'll still have the last laugh because non smokers have made a rod for their own backs
If smoking is going to kill me, so be it. Something is bound to do it eventually, so why not something I actually enjoy doing?

Actually, I think it's very sensible. Who would pay the bulk of the cost of treating tobacco-related illnesses if there wasn't a tax on it? And let's not even consider the cost to the economy of the people who lose productive years of their lives...

This thread just reminded me of a peculiar situation that is now developing in the Netherlands.
Effective since the 1st of July, there's a smoking ban in restaurants and cafes, and that includes as well the infamous coffee-shops where marihuana is freely sold and consumed. Now, smoking marihuana is still being permitted, but the thing is that most people would usually mix tobacco into their joints to make them milder.
So the current situation is that "In other countries they look to see whether you have marihuana in your cigarette, here they'll look to see if you've got cigarette in your marihuana."

Yes there is a chance that cancer will develop. Some people are more susceptible than others, it also matters how many cigars a day you smoke.

It could happen whether I smoke or not. Like I said, there are probably more cancer inducing chemicals in the air you breathe every day. For those so worried about their health as a result of other people's actions, maybe a ban on motor vehicles, ships, diesel locomotives would be in order. Oh, not to mention power stations that spew out loads of toxic fumes to generate power, drilling rigs that run on diesel engines to drill for natural gas... Oh hell, let's just go back to the stone age and be done with it. Oh but wait, the fire in your home or village would still be polluting the atmosphere.
With all the pollutants currently in the atmosphere from so many causes and you are worried about a bit of smoke from a cigarette? It's like standing in a gas chamber waiting to be executed with a few other people and moaning a couple of them having their last cigarette before they die in case it affects you health.

A few of my parents friends have died from lung cancer, it's not a pretty sight.
I wish they could put even more disgusting images on the cigarette packets tbh. Then maybe, just maybe, some of the users realise what the heck they are doing.

- Fat food is not dangerous at all if taken in moderation. You don't get addicted to it.
- Obesity is either genetically determined, or caused by bad eating habits or an eating disorder - And even then, Sumo-wrestlers aren't exactly supermodels, but they are one of the most healthy people alive.
- The prohibition was not entirely about the actual alcohol. Read up on it.
- Extreme sports are still done under the strict supervision of health and safety... Usually. Don't confuse extreme sports with youtube vids of people skiing down mountains on beercases. Also, they're not physically addictive. Same goes for the motorcycles/skateboards/rollerblades.
- Mandatry excersise is superfluous if people are educated properly on eating habits and excersise, and redundant for people who don't eat much and have a fast metabolism... It's a much too generic solution to a complex problem.
- Farting in public is not socially acceptable in the first place, so why make the comparison?

I'll wholeheartedly support graphic warnings on cigarettes when beef/pork/chicken/bicycles/cars/ladders/toys/skis/snowboards/bathtubs etc comes with the same types of warnings. Until then, the government can suck my left ball.

How would you feel if you had pictures of quadruple bypass heart surgery on your packages of potato chips? Same principle and given the ballooning obesity and associated dire health risks associated with it, relevantly similar effects.
I pay a TON of tax on my tobacco products. You don't pay 60% tax on your McDonalds' food. So shut up.

I'm really enjoying my first cigarette of the day while reading this thread. When I was reading this thread for the first time the other day, I had a cigarette in my mouth while I saw the pic. It didn't make me throw my cigarette in the ashtry and vow never to smoke again, I just puffed away unaffected by it.
Just goes to prove that this kind of campaign isn't going to work any more than the gov't health warnings.

personaly i think smoking should be banned! It not only effects the smokers but also the non smokers like myself.
I ain't no health freak, let's get that clear, although I also don't do drugs except the pain medication I am on....
But smoking kills, pure and simple, it not only kills the smoker but it is proven to kill others, which makes it a lethal substance, and like all other lethal substances should be controlled.
Personaly I would hike the cost of tabacco and cigarettes up to about ú15 a packet....if that doesn't stop you smoking then you should really consider help!
