What are some of the pros vs cons of mounting your PSU on the top vs bottom like in some of the newer cases....wouldent cableing and that be a bi***?. And hot air rises so wouldent it just make everything above it hoter? Or is there any difrence between the PSU location?

I have yet to see any bottom-mounted PSUs. And I don't understand what the rationale for mounting a PSU at the bottom would be. My guess ? The sheer boredom of having all PSUs "up" drove somebody to say "hey, what if we mounted ours and the bottom then came up with an insane explanation almost nobody believes, but will make us sell our product to some people?"

Edited by: Pwett on 05/08/2008 16:36:04 I have 5 Antec P180s at home, 20 at the office.
You can get PSU cable extenders for a $1.00 and the reason it's done is for separating the airflow from the motherboard case and the PSU.
The other reason that it's done is because it allows you to vent the top of your case, which prevents heat bubbles from establishing around the CPU.
edit: Linkage HDD cage and PSU is seperated from the rest of the case. It's a bad photo, just testing out watercooling. _______________ Pwett CEO, Founder, & Executor <Q> QUANT Hegemony

This.
My case mounts the psu on the bottom and it has it's own air circulation completely seperate from the rest of the case. In this way the PSU isn't compete for cool air with the cpu and memory.

I have a P182, and it's a very quiet and cool case, which is great since Madrid's summers are really hot. But not everybody likes bottom mounted PSU's (see Tom's Hardware as an example.)
So pros:
- Cooler PSU/case (better airflow with clear zones)
- Quieter (depending on case model)
- Better for liquid cooling (leaves needed space on top of the case)
Cons:
- Dirtier (PSU gets full of dirt and lint if it takes the air from the bottom)
- Uncomfortable (specially to turn off PSU if the tower is on the floor.)

It's also easier to hide cables and they won't dangle down, and it's generally easier to mount the psu in the 1st place. I had some headache sliding my psu through some rail at the top.
I really like the design of the p182 for a small case it was very easy to work with. The Cosmos was also very easy to work with.

for the love of god mate do not get this case, seriously choose another, i have one and its a huge mistake, its a complete dust magnet and ive spent a fortune on air duster, it has to be cleaned out twice a week, its a horrible case and pulls in dust like you would not believe, it has no dust filters see, pick a different model from the antec range.

dust magnet? why not clean your house abit more.... it generally solves the problem if it being sucked into your computer

I have one and its great. The reason you have it as a dust magnet is that you keep it on the floor. I keep mine on a desktop and I only have to clean it once every 3 months. I suggest you do the same

What he said, clean you're house, I have a Antec 900 and I haven't cleaned inside for 3 months and its been on my floor and theres not much dust in there, although I DO have to take hair off the front grate from my cats, but that doesn't seem to get sucked in.
I can't really comment about bottom vs top as this was my first computer build and having it be a bottom mounted PSU didn't pose any problems. It does lower the center of gravity making the computer easy to carry. As for hot air, my PSU doesnt seen to put out any hot air, my 8800 GT which pumps nice toasty 80c air into my case, is another story (Part of the excuse for me getting a GTX 280 in the near future!)

Having the PSU at the bottom makes it a bit easier to route cabling, although that does depend on your mobo layout.
As for the Antec Nine Hundred drawing a lot of dust, it does.. but thats because its airflow is obscene, it shifts air like you wouldnt believe.
There are aftermarket air filters you can buy that fit perfectly between the Antec front fans and the grille, My machine is watercooled so dust isnt a massive issue, occasionally give it a blow out with an electric air compressor, gets it pretty clean.
Don't buy airduster, get a hobby compressor and use that. Every machine will draw dust regardless, so you should have something to get rid of dust already anyway.

Removing an item which draws out air from right next to the CPU is an interesting move to improve cooling. -

Edited by: 7shining7one7 on 08/08/2008 15:55:18 the rationale behind having the psu in the bottom is to create a separate windtunnel and allow more airflow to the ram cpu gfx cards.. it's especially pertinent in these dual or even triple sli rig days.
it's actually gotten pretty common, the usual setup will be putting the harddrives in the lower front of the windtunnel and the psu in the back, cooling things up.
the graphics card cpu and ram are then cooled by huge case fans which can be put there in the top bottom and side, instead of the psu disrupting the airflow by taking up huge amounts of space, especially with the "sli ready" psu's.
it also allows for semi passive psu's and higher ram/cpu 'overclockability' and is definately the way to go.. proper logistics, proper airflow, better performance, lower temperatures, solid win.

Regarding the Antec P180, it's a great case, no doubts there.
However, I really wish they'd have added 5cm more at the back and top. Cabling is really tight, and if you want to use 2 graphics cards it leaves so little room you have to reroute them and remove the fan from the bottom compartment. Which isn't a big deal, it's not really needed unless you have a passive psu. It's also a little hard to get good airflow to the bottom one, mines about 5-10C higher the the top one.
Also remember to get a psu with a long enough mainboard cable, heh.

It's ridiculous. Summer, sun on my window all day long, and it regularly is cooler inside the case than in the rest of my room
Oh, and the PSU is on top - It has plenty of room though. Although, that's a Zalman, so no problems there either...

i have this case in black here
all i can say is that after 2 years i open it and all i find at most is a very thin layer of dust at the bottom. psu at top which makes it awefull to move around...dam heavy case.
only thing that puts people off is the weird air flow

Simply heat rises. A PSU is one of if not THE top heat producer in most systems, followed by Graphics, then HDs, proc, and then North Bridge.
Keeping the PSU at the top of a case allows better airflow and does not allow preheated air to cross over the other components allowing them to heat further. It's really all about case temp if you can keep your case temp at or below 22c then the other components will be much cooler.
The case temps of many modern cases are generally around 30-36c because many case designs do not take on to account, poor cabling options, component locations and do to this issues generally do not promote a positive airflow and trap heat in the case.
Heat is your systems #1 enemy followed by dust.

bottom is better for me... a cooler master cosmos case... bottom mounted cooler... very happy
airflow is from the bottom, to the top, to the back... a lot less noise, even cooler system temperature with more powerful hardware, i support bottom mounted PSU.
