I have started a project to compile-write a EVE "pilot companion".It will take at least a year or longer, so I will come back with a lot of tech questions to be ventilated. Well, to the beginning; we are all capsuleers. We partly live in a pod. There is not much info but I found a logic glitch. From different sources I found: 1. The capsule in it self is a mini space ship, it can even warp. It cant be very small then, think about the engine. Size at least as a big ground car? 2. We are in a kind of symbiosis with the pod - connected to it biomechanical style. If it is open we die. Our bodies are floating in it. Connected, we becomethe ship we are inside. 3. Obviously we can leave the pod anyway since our photos are taken outside with other backgrounds than a capsule. And soon we will be walking inside the stations. 4. Have anybody ever seen a wiew from inside a pod ? 5. Can the pod have been "upgraded" so we are not any longer connected to it by body-cables ? 6. We are not floating around in fluid either, we sit nowadays dry and comfortable-or ? All ideas and comments on capsules are very welcome. Thank you.

1. So you're saying size matters? 2. I don't know if you ever heard of Front Mission but they had something similar albeit slightly differant, certain panzer mech pilots have a implant that gives them a neural connection to their wanzer, so they have a better understanding and control of what their operating. The pod isn't much different it's like the brain of the ship. 3. Yes you can leave the pod, just not ingame yet. 4. Inside the pod you wouldn't see your surroundings pilots have a thing covering their head/eyes, check out the eve chronicles. 5. You mean like a drone? No, what fun would there be in killing ships if there isn't a juicy frail human to destroy inside it. 6. There is a gel like material iirc, it is in one of the backround stories Here is a scientific article of the capsule

From inside a pod, you only smile and open your mouth a few times in a pod. You soon learn never to do it again. ____ Telltale sign of their presence is non-linear teleportation (www.eve-online.com/races/theodicy/Theodicy_All.pdf)

Thanks Diabolic ! I will check up the link. Want to dig into the subject before I write. No I didn mean like a drone, just read we float in a "gel" but then, logically it would be very hard to leave the capsule again. So, thats why I thougt it be uppgraded now (no fluid).
If you have more ideas about the pod, please tell. Thanks again

y, thats what I was thinking, inside the pod you are in forever, cant handle the outside grav. But then, what about the upcoming station patch ? We are supposed to be able to walk around in them.

Perhaps we just will drive around in the stations by pods......sitting in a pod bar siphoning in quafe and other goodies. Podwalks or poddancing ?

Your muscles would be fine. Most of us dont live in pods we get out. According to the lore you just get out the pod, a crew members waits for you and wipes the the goo off. As per the photo I showed above, there is a lot of goo in a pod. Then you get dressed and walk around.

Correct me if I`m wrong, but don`t IRL astronatus have to undergo a few days of "training" after coming back from a longer space trip because their muscles aren`t used to gravity anymore?
In a capsule, you are only floating in some goo stuff and you are not moving your body ever, so when you get out of a pod, I imagine pretty much every pilot needing a sort of "wake up" phase after docking somewhere (if they intent to leave the pod)
Then again, you could say tht the pod is designed to keep the body fit by stimulating muscles or something.

Edited by: Born Blind on 11/08/2008 11:27:34 Hello, you fanbois of techno-babble and pseudo-educated forum-warriors. You are right, zero-g affects muscles! BUT NOW LISTEN UP! I have a brand new concept right from the most advanced R&D-department in the known regions of space and time called MYBRAIN...
It is, and now hold your breath: artificial gravity!
Wow, what wonderful news... that must have been the biggest brainpool ever to come up with such an breathtaking, stunning technology!
And you know what? They use it on stations and starships already! No, you say? what about all the people living forever on these stations? And even if there are no stats in your ship-info about your crew, there are stories with hints an larger numers of crewmembers (thousands on BS, if I remember correctly) Hah, now you see sense. And what does it do, except make your spilled drink fall down instead of floating around? Yes, it keeps your muscles on duty.
But wait, i have one more for you: Think about the actual time you actually spend in zero gravity? Hours a day? And the rest? Right, the majority of you mostly sits on stations and oogles at the nice lady serving you the drinks.
This EvE is more advanced, you know, and the technicians living there have mastered problems, we earth-bound humans not even have encountered yet. Please refrain from taking discussions in a fantastical game out to the point where you try to apply nowadays problems or difficulties to the universe of EvE. Otherwise, we should start talking about really serious matters first, like "What happens to the results of pod-pilot-digestion while in space? How are spacetoilets designed in eve and are they using a plasma-based power-core to evaporate everything or are we just littering the surroundings of our Stations and Outposts.
Have fun, don't take me too seriously and sort out your life (fotm)

Supercap pilots are an exception to the rule still Sokratesz. Yes I know you can't leave your Wyvern (if I'm not mistaken) but hey, I can dock all I want in my Cerberus
Besides, your Wyvern is damn near the size of a station. I hardly think you'd spend EVERY moment in that pod. You might want to get out and play a rousing game of badmittion with your crew from time to time, if for no other reason than let them know they're serving a person and not some sort of machine god.

If we are to believe the backstory that titans and mothership are so huge they can disrupt tidal waves on planets nearby, then they should surely also have some sort of effect on the podpilots' bodies inside them?

I think your incorrect there riho, There are some eve chroniclers mentioning pod pilots walking around in stations (ie new cladari fw chron) and no mention of the need to "mini-clone-jump".
As for the body becoming weak, id say itd be like witrh real astronauts that must keep excercising to keep their muscles fit. Itd be very possible to leave the pod and walk around. If you read the v. first chronicle on pod-technology-swapping between cladari+jove. The first non-jove pod pilot comes out of the pod but (spoiler here) is permanantly paralysed by a rare side-effect that doesnt ussually occur with pod-normal-body transistions..Showing that in most cases it is v. possible to eject form the pod.
If i missed something plz shout out ;) poudly annoying fc's since 2007

In the eve book, Empyrian Age, there even is a special amarr survey ship that has only the pilot as its living creature and only robots to take care of maintenance. And a unique feature of this ship is, that the pilot can get out of his clone and walk the ship

I vaguely remember reading about pod pilots entering/leaving their pods when docking/undocking in Theodicy.
From what I gathered reading that scientific post about capsules and clones, the technology used to make use of a Capsule and to jump to a new clone after being podded is significantly easier to use and much less of a burden on the human psyche, therefore, it would stand that it would also be easier to use it for a short period of time, disconnect from it, and return to life outside the pod as the only real detractor of capsule technology when it was introduced was the incredible mental stress.
In the event that entering a pod is a one-way ticket (for that particular clone at least), the technology to Clone-Jump will allow any pod pilot to leave his/her pod to conduct business in a station or get some R&R whenever they feel like it.
Also, in regards to the muscle atrophy problem, wouldn't it stand to reason that if the technology of New Eden is so far advanced as to allow for Warp-Travel, Cloning, LAZORS! and such, that they also might have found a way to combat the degradation of muscle tissue due to prolonged exposure to a zero-G environment (using drugs, or just improving the human body using genetics)?

Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 11/08/2008 21:17:09 Even the oldest short stories of eve mention Pod pilots who leave their pod regulary.
Catch of the Day
Quote: The camera drone had entered the ship when it docked and only the infrared sensors were available to Gaspar to get a picture of his surroundings in the few moments it took the berth crane to lift the capsule from the ship. Gaspar always hated these moments, he relied heavily on his camera drone to get a sense of his whereabouts and with it gone he always became uncomfortably aware of the sticky goo and the blackness enveloping him in the capsule. But this discomfort was offset by the anticipation that in a few minutes heÆd be free of the confines of the capsule and his senses would again be allowed to feel and function normally.
Gaspar washed himself clean in the neat little shower box adjacent to the disembarkation room. Then he dressed himself, putting on clothes he kept in the small storage box in his capsule. He chose a smart looking suit with a long-sleeved jacket, nothing too fancy - he didnÆt want to irritate the Amarrians too much by his appearance. Gaspar left the room and commissioned a cart robot to follow him with his luggage taken from the shipÆs cargo hold.
The story Forsaken Ruins has also Pod Pilots who left their ship when the docked their ship in a previously uninhabited station, deep in 0.0.

Well 80% of your strength is gained from resisting gravity but in fairness, without gravity you wouldn't even need 20% of them to move. Considering you're in a nice, padded pod and cloned, well i wouldn't worry, odds are you'll be dead again before you notice degradation. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

if you read the empyrean age eve novel it clearly gives away at multiple locations that you can enter and exit the pod at a station. (or in 1 case at a special ship) you will be sooked trough but a shower and some new clots and you are fine.

From my understanding of the lore, the pod itself is a critical piece of the cloning process, as it takes the "snapshot" of your brain if your pod looks to be in any kind of danger and kills you instantly.
If there is no viable technology for this cloning process outside of the pod, you'd never (sanely) leave an immortal life to live an pointless mortal one. __________________________________________________

Ugh its just painful to read this thread :(. Obviously your muscles are being exercised while in the pod so they dont atrophy (either by electric stimulation or some special chemicals which keep them in shape), afaik its mentioned in several places they use something called pod-gantries which are loading bays for pods, where you just go to get into your pod, which then gets loaded into your ships. No cloning, no silly stuff, just plain old common sense. ______________________

But 'most' pilots don't stay in they're pods for weeks at a time. If you're in an MS/Titan pods can be designed to allow you to leave while still aboard. Its risky(ICly) for sure, but doable.

Stats in the description of the smallest device which works with artificial gravity state 50m¦ size. It's the small tractor beam. So I would believe, you can fit that and several others into one ship with over 400.000m¦ volume
Even a shuttle already has 5000¦ volume and you only get space for your Pod and 10m¦ cargo... what with all the rest? (that would be a cube of over 17m length)
Muscle-degradation isn't!
