I just had this, someone at work asked -
"Whats that message board you keep tapping away on"
I find EVE hard to explain to someone that doesnt really know what computer games are, let alone what a space combat MMO would be.
So I say;
"Uh, Its a space.. online game.. you fly around and shoot stuff with loads of other people. Good Times!"
How would YOU explain EVE to someone that isn't at all clued in with games?

Well one mate of mine is an old MMO player who, since he met his partner, is no longer "allowed" to waste his life on computer games . He loves to hear all the details of whats going on in EVE and he understands a lot of what I go on about.
A few people at work are also interested but don't have any computer game experience and this does make explaining things a little difficult. All I do is talk and talk and talk till they wish they were dead and think that they'll never ask me about it again.
Till the next time anyways.

Online game set in space that you play with tens of thousands of other people all over the world at the same time in a big virtual space-world and fly around in space ships through space.

Strangely enough I actually had a dream about explaining EVE to my old high school science class. If I recall I just used WoW as a basis and just compared their features, mostly the levelling system. Then some little ******* interrupted me and accused me to selling timecards for isk in a very derogative tone. I shut him up though. So yeah, I'd attempt to explain by using WoW as a generic mmo and then go into the finer points.

I compare EVE to old Ultima Online. How it used to be a harsh realm but more and more the Dev team caters to people who want little to no risk. Much like Ultima Online. |

I have tried that a couple of times, all of them failed.
Once, i had two friends over while i was playing, and they were like "lolwatareyouplaying?" and "that shit looks really boring, what is the point of the game?". I tried to explain the whole sandbox free-to-do-whatever-you-like-thing to them but they kept asking what the goal of the game was. Pretty odd considering one of them plays wow and should know about MMOs not having a universal goal, and the other one plays a lot of RTS and racing games and have a brother who used to play wow.
After i had tried to explain for a while, they just laughed at me, saying that i played a totally worthless game and that i sucked. Then i logged off EVE for the remainder of their visit.. |

People need other people to tell them what to do. They can't think or make decisions by themselves. __________________________________________________

I used to explain EVE by beginning with "It's like WoW, but not really...". Now I just say "It's a space mmo with a steep learning curve. You fly around in a big ol' spaceship and shoot people. And before you ask, No it's not like WoW."

Heh, EVE comes with the package in my case....
I usually just say "internet spaceships", if they want to know more, I just give them a CD with the EVE client on it, and say "see for yourself". That's pretty much how I got into EVE, a friend started playing it, and virtually never stopped talking about it, so I downloaded the client to see what the fuss was about, and here I am!

Printing up some of the backstories and letting them read them to learn about the dark world of EVE might work too

A game full of eccentric fanatics who like to blow each other up and get perverse pleasure out of seeing naked frozen bodies floating about in space. If you are trying to convince them to play and they are into pron, the naked frozen bodies bit might sway them a bit more.
Otherwise, if they are old enough to remember Elite Frontier and First Encounter you could tell them it's a very intellectual MMO version of Elite but without the newtonian physics.
-- There's a simple difference between kinky and perverted. Kinky is using a feather to get her in the mood. Perverted is using the whole chicken. |

What if they insist on asking then?
My response is basically:
"Know WoW? (I fill them in on WoW if they didnt, oftentimes I dont have to, lots of localized MMO's down here)"
Which leads to:
"Well think of WoW as Happy Carebear Land. EVE Online's that seedy pub down the street in a bad section of town well known by people because dead blokes end up in the dumpster in the back."
I've successfully led 4 people into EVE with that. -
