Devastating news in the TX household - another of our hamsters has mysteriously died.
Either me or the GF checks them at least every 24hrs to make sure they're alright, but neither of us checked last night. Tonight, my GF checked them, and found one motionless, not breathing, squished in a corner hald buried in random hamster-cage-bedding-and-crap. Stiff as a board too - rigamortis (spelling?).
To me, it looks like she was just squished under some other hamsters - they like to sleep all squished together - she looks like she was on the bottom of a pile of hammies, so I think perhaps she's suffocated. When hamsters are dead or dying, the vet told us once that they can mutilate each other a bit, and Baileys has a noticeable wound with some insidey-bits visible on one side - I'm am sincerely hoping that these were inflicted AFTER death, and that the position I found her in is in fact an indication that she was suffocated in her sleep rather than bullied and wounded.
There is another possibility - that's shes choked on some bedding of some kind, the vet says they can choke on the cotton-wool type of bedding, and I dunno if my GF said she'd already removed the stuff, or she has NOW removed the stuff... I dunno.
Either way, it's very sad, and we're both quite upset. She's gone to bed, and I'm emmersing myself, as ever, into the virtual world of teh interwebs and forums and stuff to escape reality again. When I'm really tired, I'll hopefully go to bed and nod off quickly without having to think too much about it.
The Russian Dwarf hammies should be ok in groups. We've given them lots of food bowls, lots of water bottles, plenty of tubes and housing and bedding and treats and wheels etc etc - they've got loads of space - we've done everything we can do to make them happy, so the likelyhood of them killing each other off should be very small.
My gf cut the bottom bit off a drinks carton, and I've wrapped her in kitchen roll, put her inside. Also put some woodshavings and some chocolate treats in to see her through to the other side.
There were six, then there were five, and now the dearest sweetest friendliest hamster in the world has departed us, leaving us with just four.
RIP Baileys The Hamster.

My condolences. Even though you know that rodents don't exactly have an excessively long lifespan it still hurts when you lose them.

RIP Baileys The Hamster.
Condolences, genuinely. Reminds me of the time my old cat, Mr. Jack passed away in his little hidehole back at our old home. At least he died in peace in his favorite spot.
..but a small little devil on my right shoulder is going, "you idiot! You play an internet spaceships game wherein scamming, murder, corp embezzlement and theft, and suicide ganking is the norm and you cry over the friendliest hamster's death? You panzy! gb2wow or w/e you internet spaceship nerds go spout out."
...last time I'm feeding him thoughts of pirating in lowsec and spraying water at my sister's cat to **** it off. sorry.

...Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are generally solitary and will fight to the death if put together...
...it is not unheard of of hamsters ganging up one one and killing and eating it...

Yeah, that's why we got Russians cuz they're supposed to be better in groups. But like I say - we give them plenty of space and good and entertainment, in fact, you might concider the housing we've given them to be a little excessive - but as long as they're happy, then it's all good.

Yeah, those are pretty cute. A friend of mine had build like a 2 meter cubed maze for his. Pretty awesome that was. You could tell his hamster loved it. I hope the other five will fare better. -------------------------------------------------- If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles - Sun Tzu |

My cat is exactly the same but 19 years old. Hes still jumping around like a crazy fool but I literally cannot understand how he is continuing to digest food. The width of his back, just after his ribs is like one and a half inches. There can't be much Cat in there.

Sorry for you loss. I had 2 guinea pigs over the past several years, whom happened to die the nights I was up at 4am and didn't bother to check on them before I went to bed. Internet space ships are good for getting over it, and a new hamster is just a pet shop trip away. -------------------------------------------------- Everyone is born right handed, only the great over come it.

Don't ever get the cotton type bedding, because:
Many many years ago I had a hamster, it was lonely so we got another one, both were suppose to be the same sex, but... they weren't. One day I wake up and find many hamster babies and to get to the point the cotton wrapped around the babies, some died, some lost legs, ect. I would never buy that crap again.
