Yesterday I got a holo reel mission and had to go 7 jumps. The route to the pickup site was .6 and higher, so when I went back I just set the return address and went. Suddenly I was in a .3 system. After that a .4 and another .4 with a gatecamp(slithered through), and I got safely at my destination. Phew
So, apparently the routing algorithm isn't symmetrical, so I'll pay more attention in future missions.
And now the big question: can I force the routing algorithm to use safe systems only, or do I have to handpick waypoints using the map?

P.S. I didn't use the autopilot, I used the overview and jumped to the next gate each time.

Hmmm, I can't see finished missions, right? Source was Eletta, destination was (I think) Arant or Aramotte in Essence. The destination gate had a cloudy ring around it.

That's just the way computers do pathfinding. If they have multiple routes with the same 'cost' (=traveltime generally) through a network, they typically pick the first one they found. They tend to go 'right' on an intersection when both left and right are just as good. So if you come form the other direction, it picks 'right' again, so you go the other way around.

You can access autopilot settings through the map (F10). There are options of using safe route, unsafe route, shortest route...

Because I still haul in my Itty and do not know all low sec off top of head I still have that warning message to remind me. Before long jumps I also do the F10 feature to see if I have any low sec along the way to be cautious over.
PS - Do you have your system set to avoid low sec (if possible)? -------

Thanks, found it!
And yeah, I know about path finding algorithms. I was just hoping they might have tried to make it deterministic.

They are, by definition. Same input = same output. However, if your starting location is different, you are changing variables so the outcome will be different. You will still get an 'optimal' (= same number of jumps) route, there are just more then one optimal routes.
It would be nice if they'd take the travel time between stargates into account aswell, but it seems they currently just count the number of jumps and weigh in stuff like low sec and how busy a system is if you enable that in the options.

The in-game auto-pilot is NOT deterministic.
You can plot a course to one destination, change destinations, then reset it back to the first destination and get a different route, even though you are requesting a route between the same two system.
For the in-game autopilot, about the only route selection option that you have is to avoid low security space when possible.
If you want more control on plotting courses, I would suggest using this site. You can also use it with the in-game browser as it will provide easy options to right-click and select waypoints along your route.
It is recommended that you manually warp to each stargate, only ever use the autopilot to highlight the gates in yellow. This is especially true in low/null sec space.
Otherwise, if you are looking for an easy reference for manual navigation, I would suggest Ombey's map.
BTW - not all high sec systems are connected to the main cluster of high sec systems. There are islands of high sec space that can only be accessed via low sec space.

Yup, I only use the autopilot button to activate the gate and then deactivate the autopilot (2 quick clicks).
