Edited by: Dmitri Vasso on 07/08/2008 21:41:57 I know the various ships play various important roles, but I like to fly just one ship and stick with it. I've have a couple succesful runs with both the vagabond and the hurricane, but I've just recently finished training for the sleipnir.
I have maximum gunnery skills (for projectiles), excellent support/drone skills (all lvl 4/5 and a good all round experience with various pvp ops.
Now the best all round ship for gangs, roam ops, camping, - etc, the way I view it, is a ship that deals both lots of dps and tanks half decent - and the Slepnir does this like no other (minmatar) ship, at least below the category of BS. The vagabond is fast and vicious, both in appearance and damage output, but with the upcoming MWD crisis, it doesn't seem like such an obvious choice to stock up on. The hurricane is pretty versatile to work with, being able to fit a decent tank or go pretty fast, and it even dishes out a fair amount of damage. Oh, and its cheap. I haven't really flown many more ships, other than the Maelstrom (BS V) for ratting/missions and inty's.
Now, I like the opinions of other experienced players, so my question to you is: if you where to choose one of the above ships to stock up, and to specialize in using, which would you choose? Or rather, which ship would you rather want to fly alongside with? Suggestions for other ships are welcome, and if believe a certain ship worth training for, do tell your tale.
edit: oh, and one more thing, how would you fit it?

If you're the type that burns isk, sure. Otherwise you can buy and fit 7 canes for the same price and do nearly as well.

Deals less DPS at CS IV and more DPS at CS V, amounts are negligible at best, and it's not exactly going to solo stuff either, due to a lack of full tackle (5-midslot shield-tanker, win), or lack of anything even resembling a tank. Plus, Hurricanes are about 6-7 times cheaper.
Plus, you're not nanoing the Sleipnir anymore either.

Lows: WCS x4 CoProc
Mids: XL SB II Invuln II x2 SBA II Cap Booster II w/800s
Highs: 4 Med NOS x4 (best named) Gang Assist Mod 220mm AC II
Sustains 900 DPS tank ~500 without cap boosters and when you can't tank anymore you just warp away! Throw on drones for some DPS, warrior IIs for any pesky smaller ships. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

i think u are mistaking the sleipnir with a claymore :) and a ships tank isnt based on how much u rep but the dmg u take ...meaning that the higer your resist are the better ..why do u think hic's for instance take a ***** to kill cuz they got haxzor resistances and as for "going for the sleipnir" part ..stick to vaga or cane ...cane = cheaper and better + only thing that sleipnir has as a bonus besides cane is the tank but u cant really fit ok cuz u need mwd / scram / web / injector :) as a personal opinion i think sleipnir was made to be fitted with artillery :-ss

Sleipnir was meant to be a gang support ship. It can hit 20km out easy enough with barrage on 220s.
Now with a serious setup that isn't just meant to tank and run, you can get 400 dps EFT warrioring it and a sustained tank of over 1k dps (with my skills I get 200, but I can't use T2 med ACs anyway yet). It will take more than 1 BS to take you down and I can guarantee his tank will break before yours. A gank abaddon won't break your tank and has the same EHP as you. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

Edited by: Lorz0r on 09/08/2008 11:59:08 Sleipnir is a bit better than the hurricane in every way. Sure similar DPS but that extra 50% falloff actually make that effective DPS alot higher. Also a Sleipnir can easily fit 3 gyro's in it's lows and if a hurricane does that it's going down fast. ALSO it's tank is actually pretty good with an XL SB2, invuln2 and 1 Kinetic resistance rig.

no, no, no NO. what the hell?? you shouldnt be flying command ships. claymore = tank, sleipnir = gank, WCS = carebear.

The sleipnir is definately better than the hurricane. try flying one. it also has 50% more falloff more DPS and more drone space. Also why artillery? Because of the sleipnir's optimal and tracking bonuses...ohwait
yeah triple post what are you gonna do about it

The hurricane is probably the most versatile considering speed, power, and affordability. Gang mods are always welcome and you can pvp just go have fun. The sliepnir can do everything the cane can do better but that's a lot of cash for what it does.

Cane has so many ways you can fit it; and they work. Gotta love that.
Tempest is for pure bling. One of the best looking ships in the game. Too bad it sucks. You can fit it as many ways of the Cane, but none of them work. /sigh
Lastly, the Sleipnir. Very nice ship. An upgrade from the Cane. A few ways to fit it. Nice damage and tank.
Huginn, Vagabond and Rapier were all very nice ships. R.I.P. after patch. AnTi. |

Shuttle. You fly around fast accomplishing nothing just like every other Minmatar ship, but at least losses are minimal when somebody gets bored enough to decide its somehow worth their time to gank your pathetic excuse for a ship.

Early on a Rifter is a great beginner pvp ships and will still see service from time to time. The Vigil is a cute run about that I still use.
The Rupture is a really sweet ship with good damage and a good buffer with 1600mm plate. Great early and an ongoing option if you like your ships small and cheap.
The Stabber is a real beaut with T2 guns. Cheap, agile and fast. You get a feel for what it is like to fly a Vagabond and you get to zoom.
When you have more isk and want to contribute more to a gang the Hurricane is a great ship to go for and rewards spending time in - get BC 5. My favourite version is with 1600mm plate, 2x gyro's, 2x T2 EANM's, T2 DCU and two medium remote reps in the highs. The Hurricane is one of those ships that does good damage in real combat siutuations, it is affordable and it is versitile with many good setups. Great thread on them on SHC.
The Vagabond is a special ship - a must fly. The speed nerf will hit it but it seems likely it will still be fast enough to do the job while alot of ships arn't.
The Sliepnir is a really cool ship according to many experianced pvpers. I haven't flown it, despite having 30m sp's all in Minmatar, as I've been a pirate for a long time and we found remote repping armor tankers far more effective than shield tanking - especially an active tank that is so vunerable to neuts. I'm finishing training for it now but suspect I've missed the party.
As skill points increase training for BS becomes more appealing and you find that, in many situations, flying a Typhoon or a Tempest increases the size/qualtiy of enemy force you can take on. A Tempest may not be an optimal BS for most situation, with mediocre damage, but it fits BS class remote reps and heavy neuts and has a spare mid or two for ECCM. In the sort of combat I have been involved in most (low sec) a remote repping armor tanked BS based gang is the best thing for winning fights and that means a Tempest or a Typhoon for max impact. A Tempest is better than a Typhoon until you get very good missile skills which takes awhile. I'm still not quite there even though I can use T2 torps as my gunnery skills are almost perfect combined with sweet implants - 2x +5% damage gunnery implants is not that expensive compared to the missile +5's.
A Maelstrom is a solid pve boat for pwning level 4's as it can do alot of damage in a gank artillary fit while still sporting enough tank. I haven't done alot of mission running but I was very suprised when I tried some level 4's recently in a Maelstrom.
Minmatar also have a good Dictor, a good HIC, good Intie's, and some recons who used to be the mickey and hopefully will still be important. Minmatar have a good range of ships who have their moment when they are the best thing to field. I've found it best to have a wide selection of ships available to fly as there is no single best minmatar ship. It is a case of using the best ship for the job and we have a solid toolkit - though large AC's need a buff.

Sleipnir is awesome, but in your situation I would stock up on hurricanes. Hurricanes are cheaper. But more importantly, they are more versatile so you will have more fun with them and get fatigued with them far less.

Selipnir coudl be ok it it didnt have a pathetic cargo hold taht cannot carry more than 4 800 Cpa charges and ammo for 2 min combat. With his speed capability nerfed it needs to have simmilar cargo hold to other command ships (taht are WAY bigger). Yor tank is worth nothign if you have cp charges for usign it for 30 seconds only. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough
