So, today, after waiting for days to get a fight. One of my characters engage some fleet fun. It was 350 locals or so. And what'ya think happens ? I see ships, the locktimer keeps resetting for 10 minutes. Then i instantly loose all shield/armor/structure. Then, I fly my BS another 10 minutes. Before I just log off as nothing is happening.
I pay $15/month to play a game where all the fun cant be done. Its like buying a car that wont drive over 1mph in the city cause the city is fun.

That should be official. Then we'd get less Ebayer Wow douches who want to fly Titans after a week, and less guys like the OP who think that any other MMO could support infinitely many people in the same area.

it's more like driving your car, then sometimes you return 400m backward, and sometimes youy just keep going on even vs walls, then after some time your gear won't respond, and you wouldn't be able to use the radio, the lights and the minibar.
then, after some time, you just stop your car, and it disappears from the road.
thats comparing your car to your ship. -----------------------------------------

No. Your ship is always fine in EVE, it's the environment that causes problems, the environment you put it in no less, so my metaphor is appropriate. -

And despite this, you keep buying new cars month after month after month. Have you considered a bike, public transit, or maybe not driving your car under situations where that happens? ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Fleet fights are broken, bud, full stop. There isn't really any way to win one without dealing with pretty much unplayable lag unless both your fleet and the opposing fleet are pretty small.
The people who muddle through them have gotten used to it, and have developed strategies for dealing with it, and winning them is important enough to them to do so. I can't see the fun in it, but to each their own.
Play some part of the game where huge fleet fights aren't obligatory. If you're into PvP, go for factional warfare instead of joining a 0.0 alliance, or do some pirating, or anything where the fights are smaller and the servers can handle it.
Maybe they will make it possible to have a good fleet fight some day, but that day isn't today.

Oh, of course! The lag is our fault for daring to attempt gameplay with a large group of people!
Your reply will be something like "350 is more than a large group"
I will then point out constant complaints from FW pilots of lag affecting their 20 man gangs. Good god people with your stupid argument **** me off. -omg-

What do you define as a fleet fight?
Seems like the limitation in other games is usually 16 vs 16 or 32 vs 32. If your pushing 300 invididual players in local, does that even compare to ANY other game on the market?
How about 100 vs. 100? Does that handle well?
Not that your complaint is invalid. Not at all. But I do think that we, as players, are pushing the limit on what can be 'reasonably expected' from an MMO, even with todays technology.
And if they did make it better, somehow, and we could run 500 vs 500 man fleets, do you honestly believe that players wouldn't push that, too?
So you want security? That's perfectly alright. But you should be willing to trade freedom and profit for that security. |

And this right here, my friends, is the crux of the biscuit...
The better CCP makes their hardware, the more we will push it. It really is inevitable in this situation, with the EVE cluster being what it is. Jita is proof that this will continue no matter how much processing power CCP throws at the server. -=^=-

I am thinking if you know there are going to be 200 plus in the system just don't enter it. This will do two things it will stop your from losing ships to lag and it will help cut down on the lag the other fleet is experience as it shoots up the rest of your alliance that was foolish enough to continue to enter the system.

This. When they do manage to get 1000 in local working lag-free, we'll pile 1500 people in the system, and someone will whine about the lag on the forums.

As has been discussed a lot, making the servers faster alone isn't going to do it, since obviously the "big players" are more than willing to push beyond the point of "unplayable" to try to achieve their objectives.
Some innovative mechanics need to be introduced that make it more advantageous to spread out and attack simultaneously across a "front line" than in one system at a time.
You are absolutely right though, PvP fights in most of the other games I've played start to get pretty dodgy around 32v32, or even before in some cases.
The difference between EvE and those games (e.g. EQ) is that there is real territorial conquest here, which encourages much larger groups to form, and the PvE resources that are fought over in those games are usually numbers limited too (e.g. 36 man "raid zones").
EvE provides every incentive to "blob up" and, other than the lag, no drawbacks. Since the lag effects everyone in the same system alike, there is no real drawback to bringing bigger numbers. There really needs to be.

Of course the lag is our fault. What do you think causes it, the weather? CCP can only be blamed in as much as they created game mechanics which favor blobbing. It's the fleet lemmings who sign up to play spaceship whack a mole despite the fact that it is lagged to crap, and would be poor gamplay even if it wasn't lagged.
As for FW, while on occasion we get dropped from near empty systems due to nearby fleets, I've been in a couple of fights where our 40ish man gang have jumped into an enemy gang of similar size and gotten no lag. On the whole, FW is very lag-free.

Let me give you my 3 step program to solve your problem: 1. Cancel your account now, if lag doesn't kill you some pirate is sure to and you can't handle it 2. Install World of Warcraft and create a Paladin... oops, I mean buy a max level Paladin. 3. Enjoy never being able to die.

10 Years from now when my calculator is powerful enough to handle them? In teh past 2 years, everything has gotton more laggy for the same numbers in system.

Edited by: Ruze on 08/08/2008 22:17:21 Hehehe ... players continue to push the envelope, not because they can make players out of nothing, but because player numbers will continue to grow.
No, if it magically changed tomorrow, I'm sure some major alliance would organize enough to create a bomb, but for the most part, we'd see heavenly sails. For at least six months. As the word got out, more players would come back or join up, and in six months, we'd have issues again.
It's just one of those things. We have more in this game then any other game I'm aware of. The mechanics of blob fightings is BS. I think we agree on that. Hopefully there will be a change.
But unless a cap is placed on the number of players in a system, I don't think we'll ever truly be without lag. That, or they somehow increase the technological level of their machines astronomically ;?j
Enjoy your iPhone
