I'm writing this post to reach out to other Mac Gamers and dicuss about how the classic Escape Velocity relates to EVE.
I recently visited ambrosia's website again for the first time in many years and it dawned on me that EVE is like an evolutionary progression of EV, the game I played so many years ago.
I instantly realised that some of the elements currently missing in EVE was key to making EV such a classic. In my nostalgia I am a bit lost for words and I was wondering if anyone who can remember to share their thoughts on how to improve EVE by using EV as an example.

Ev was one of my first games i played on my iMac waaaayyy back. Damn that was a great game.
The thing which made it so cool was the complete freedom and the means in which the player base could add to and change the game through patches. This was great as it allowed you to play an entirely different game through TC patches.
Also the minor change patches with a few added missions or changes to graphics also extended the games life.
I played that fame from aout 1999-2002 and it never got old.
There was a million different ways to outfit your ships and the physics system meant that it was always great having fights even with the 2d top down graphics.
Things for EVE to learn from EV;
Not alot, it incoperated all the cool features. However something EV had was proper standings. If you did missions for one government the other one didnt like you. Also you could get away with killing things in the highest sec systems cos the police were not invincible. It allowed an element of realism.
Looting ships is a big one, and the ability to capture ships and make them our escorts of even fly them yourself. There was nothing cooler than owning a confederate cruiser and having 6 confed destroyers as escort. Great it really was.

CCP should make EVE shareware and have Cap'n TomB fly around and threaten to pod you if you don't pay up.

The combat was way faster paced, and I think the missions were cooler. Even the repititive crappy missions are cooler then the ones in EVE.
But yeah it seems very strange that EVE is like a 3D version of EV. Maybe the devs played it?

Bungie?
Before there was Halo there was Marathon... Sweet sweet Marathon... It's no wonder Microsoft bought them.
Tho that was about the only gaming I did on a Mac (some Spaceward Ho! and Colonization being the others). Did tons on an Apple (II, then II+, then IIE, then IIGS) tho.
Sure, everyone supports saving Einstein's brain, but when you put it in the body of a Great White Shark, suddenly you've "gone too far". |

Hey don't forget Myth. I've never owned a Mac but Myth rocked and was developed, by bungie of course, for Mac and PC simultaneously :)

Back in the mid-80's I played a game called Starflight. It was amazing how much of a game they managed to fit onto 2 360k floppies. There were hundreds of planets you could land on and explore. The nebulas in the game were green, I often wondered about the coincidence between that and the title of one of the music tracks in this game. :) There weren't any agent missions, well, there was this little detail of the stars flaring up from the galactic core moving outward, destroying every living thing along the way. The starport you call home gets wiped out 10 months into the game (game time, not real time). There wasn't any mention of this on the game package, they figure you'd find out soon enough :)

Ahhh Escape Velocity.
Takes me back, the pain I've been through to get that working on my P.. Basilisk etc.
The storyline missons you could do with the various factions was pretty cool I thought, although if you didn't go with the rebels you lost out on one of the coolest ships in the game (rebel carrier) and didn't get the tractor beam. Best bit for me was that little area at the bottom where those two worlds were fighting each other and you could join in on either side to fight with them as you wanted.
Be nice if EVE had these little micro factions that you could work for to that extent.. get cool toys 'n stuff through faction level and storyline missons for the navy. Ah well.. of course.. the kestrel in EV rocked.. oh.. wait a minute :)
I keep faith, it's only what I believe in that changes.

Holy ****, other people in EVE have heard of that too?! I don't feel so alone :P They actually made a third one in the continuation of the series, with a much better engine in it that is set up to be able to be used on PC as well. /emote eye's the EV NOVA icon desirably...

Edited by: KamiCrazy on 03/06/2004 10:14:49 I haven't played Nova yet, but I did play Over-ride,
however I didn't get too much into over-ride cause it didn't run too well on my LC 575
but I think I have lots of time at school playing Nova on the laptop ;P
Btw those dissing mac gaming, try some of ambrosia's stuff, so simple yet so addictive.
EDIT: yeah the kestrel was ubar!!
We need a ship like the kestrel in EVE, maybe a gallente caldari hybrid?

First thing I looked for when I started EVE was the "Demand Tribute" option, oh.. the happy days of owning the galaxy. Never did get Sol though.
Come on CCP, we want story line missons with multiple parts to it! (well I do anyway) I'm almost tempted to sign up for polaris or whatever if they have the option of writting these types of missons. And I still recon that there should be skirmishes between the pirates and enemy factions within EVE. It added so much to the world in EV.
I keep faith, it's only what I believe in that changes.
