Hey,
Was wondering how target painting drones will compare now versus normal damage dealing ones?
Naturally this is something that will differ from ship to ship due to having different DPS and weapon types.
What are your experiences and has anyone done any calculations on thei effectiveness?

The general consensus among EW drones is:
Unless they're ECM, don't bother. __________________________________________

I have found small neut drones to be effective against certain interceptors (the ones they can catch up with) Used in conjuction with guns, they can easily take down ceptors they can catch. Trust me on that...

You'd be better off in virtually all cases using Warrior IIs imo. TP drones kind of suck atm

About the only instance that you may want to consider using them is if you're flying a PvP-fit torp Raven and don't want to spare a mid-slot for a Target Painter. Even in that situation, it's questionable if you'd get more benefit out of TP drones, ECM drones, or Plain Jane damage drones. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

I used to use a TP-900 ratting with a Raven, back when torps had range. It helped destroy cruisers and BC's a little faster. Now that I'm using more cruise, I switched out the Painter for a Heavy.

That's what I'm currently looking at. I could forsake a web aswell and use webber drones, but using drones for webbing is bothersome and you're loosing DPS either way.
But does anyone know how the TP drones in this case would actually translate into damage compared to ordinary hammerhead II's?
- I s'pose that TP drones might be a good option for those with little SP in the drone department.

Only time you would use them is on a Torp drake w/o a painter fit. Simply take your torp theoretical dps versus your hammerhead II theoretical dps, then graph them versus signature radius. I'm willing to bet that the painter drones never add enough signature to make them worthwhile, unless you have very low drone skills.
Even then, medium ECM drones are also quite nice, and would probably make up for the midslot for the target painter your worried about.

Torp DRAKE???
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |
