I have always had an incredibly strong and insatiable urge to build a huge space fleet, and then go about reeking havoc with said fleet. I'm always a couple trillion isk and a few thousand players short to do it in EVE, so i like finding other games to fill my needs.
Problem i have is I cant seem to find a good enough game. Homeworld is amazing, but its an old game and is limited in scope (i played a demo for homeworld 2 but felt like it lacked the same scope im looking for). Nexus: The Jupiter incident looked very interesting, but doesn't have the resource management/base building focus that i like in strategy games. Galactic Civilizations is a great game, but falls short on combat (luckily there are plenty of other fun things to do). Sins of a solar empire is a great game as well, but the game just left me wanting something else.
I dont even know what i want from a space game, but i just want to try more. Does anyone know of any other good space strategy games?

Space Empires 4 Deluxe. It's only 2D, but it's actually a pretty fun game. __________________________

What this man says. It isn't exactly fast paced, but very deep on many levels, and you can build huge fleets of custom ships you make yourself from researched components.

Check out Sword of the Stars and the expansion, they're both surprisingly good (if a little unpolished). Plus it's a hard to beat experience when it comes to taking a huge fleet and plowing it into a massive line of defenders. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

This is probably true...its such a good game. Its just that i felt the combat was based around the overall strategic elements, whereas the Total war series has created an amazing strategy game around a fun and intuitive combat system.
I guess i should of been a bit more clear...but im looking so much for a good space combat experience. If there was a strategy game that just somehow used the combat system of homeworld effectively...that would be my dream game.

Released a few years back, didn't really make much of a splash in terms of marketing but it was a fun (and pretty) game to play.

I'm a big fan of Sins, MoO series and the Space Empire series
of them all though, I prefer MoO3, its alot slower but you have alot of power customizing the ships and the universe detail can be as hands off or micromanaged as you want

Did you just say you prefer MoO3? I don't think I've ever read that anywhere before. You may even be the only person who LIKES MoO3.

far from unlikely
I like the micromanagement XD I'm a masochist lol
I did love MoO2 as well though but the scope was just so much more epic in 3

Edited by: Tarek Tarazul on 12/08/2008 07:56:27 You could try haegemonia. Though there won't be massive battles. IIRC the max number of combat squads was 9 or 12, but they make up for it in presentation. Imo still the graphic primus.
Or try some mods. (Like that one special Star wars mod for Homeworld) http://warlords.swrebellion.com/wp/ its ship index is really overkill: http://warlords.swrebellion.com/shipindex.php
haven't yet tried on my new machine, but i guess with maximal fleet limit it will still break down to a diashow. MoO3.... uhm it has the crappiest combat system i have seen yet.

Edited by: Tarek Tarazul on 12/08/2008 10:58:34 How about a design comparison of MoOII ships?
My high tech one fields like this: Systems: High Energy Focus Hyper-X-Capacitors Phasing Cloak Subspace Teleporter Achilles Targeting Unit Time Warp Facillitator Battle Pods
Mauler Devices (in the real end game its about 80-100 maulers in a death star)
The tactic is to move close to the enemy while cloaked, uncloak when your enemy made his move, blast as much as possible (maybe moving around via Teleport) and recloak in your extra round. Thanks to cloak and teleport you are able to get really close so the 2x range penalty doesn't harm much. Also the damage of the weapon systems is against shields at 150% against structure at 300%. And you bypass armor thanks to the Achilles Targeting Unit. With the capacitor you reach an "effective" 6 maulers for any one you fit into your ship.
Unless your enemy isn't phase cloaked as well, there is no limit to the fleet strength one of those ships can take out since the uncloaked phase when firing resets the timer of rounds you can stay phase-cloaked.
-Ships? I don't build ships! I build guns and fit engines to them.-

The strategy I used last game, which worked to great effect, consisted entirely of two ship types: 1. Frigates armed with (if I remember correctly) A Phase Cloak, Battle Pods, 1 Stasis Field, 2. Cruisers armed with Phase Cloaking Devices and miniaturized Stellar Converters.
Approach under cloak, uncloak the frigates and use them to put the entire enemy fleet in stasis, unlock one at a time and see how many Stellar Converter blasts it can survive. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Imperium Galactica II by far is the best Galactic Conquest game that I have played. It has a rich environment, campaign storyline to follow, diplomacy, alliances, spying, research, planetary ground based combat as well as galactic fleet combat. Very good game and worth checking out .

Yes, some friends of mine preferred stellar converters as well. They never miss and have no damage loss afaik. Still even fully miniaturized they are really large. And afaik the mods (High energy focus and so on don't affect them) That's why i rely on maulers (13 space for 100dmg)
As for stasis webs: i use them to capture some antarrans (for the armor), but it's so work intensife, i really can't think of using them in big battles.

If you're statebound, the Sword of Stars Collector's Edition came out a couple months ago. It includes the expansion which was never published out here.
I really like it; it's made by the people that made Homeworld Cataclysm (which wound up being my favorite of the three). |

The nice thing about nearly all of these games is that they have Demos online
I'm downloading sword of the stars right now.
