I have never FC'd anything lager than a 5 man gang so my experience is limited, but in nearly every occasion in FW that I have perticipated in the FCs appear to be more concerned about losing ships than engaging the enemy. Especially in roaming cruiser gangs when an enemy fleet has a BS or 2 the FC opts to safe spot and try to pick of stragglers. This usually turns into 2 hours of shadowing the fleet and then going to home system. Why are fc's more concerned about their fleet survival than inflicting losses. A cruiser gang can at least take out the BS before being obliterated. I personally would much rather get in a battle and lose my cruiser and actually engage the enemy than play follow the moving safe spot inty. If a fleet of cruisers can take out a BS and some t2 ships and then get toasted then to me it seems mission accomplished. Your signature is too large. Sounds like it's time that someone usurps the so-called authority of FW FC's. That, or just assemble your own fleet.

Been in FW since day one, and never came across this scenario. There are valid reason to fight and valid reasons to fight another day. If you don't like the situations, then fly under another FC, or try forming your own fleets. --------------------------------- Pithecanthropus erectus, a name derived from Greek and Latin roots meaning upright ape-man. |

Sure I understand that there are valid reasons not to fight, however in these circumstances the FC's have verbally stated that they didnt want anyone losing any ships while they were FCing. This is in the time period within 3 hours before downtime. Seems odd that people join FW and only want to fight when they can incur no losses themselves. Just an observation. It's not just FW, most FC's that I've flown with are extremely risk-averse.
This isn't surprising, as people tend to stop X'ing up when a FC has a reputation for Leeroy-type behaviour...
I wish it were different, but that's how people like to play this game.

None of the FC's I've been under have opted to hide or run unless massive lossage is guaranteed.
Most will offer the fleet the option of suiciding or going home.

There are a few FC's I wouldn't mind seeing underminded.
There's all types though.
There's the ones so quiet I can't hear what they're saying.
There's the ones that shout and swear so loud I can't stand listening to them.
There's ones so safe you get nothing but a nice tour around lowsec then back home.
There's ones so dangerous they get themselves and everyone else killed and soon become infamous and unpopular to nearly everyone through word of mouth.
So that's why everyone plays it safe, there's a lot of stigma attached if you go charging in. You prob won't be able to FC again. :P

Every FC is different -- if you don't like an FC's philosophy, don't fly with him, problem solved.
One reason why an FC may be concerned about fleet survival is that a reputation for bringing the fleet home intact translates directly into the ability to raise a larger, heavier fleet. I fly with an FC who is -- no argument -- too conservative. But when he says "bring DPS", he gets a fleet of twenty or thirty battleships. The same people, flying with a different FC, show up in a motley assortment of cruisers and battlecruisers.
Finally, it's important to remember that not everybody in the game is a killmail *****. Fleets accomplish useful things (like, say, keeping the enemy plexers away) even when they don't kill. So, yeah, keeping the fleet alive is a perfectly legitimate concern of an FC. And lordy, if you don't like it, there's no shortage of "scream and leap and die" fleet commanders out there to fly with! ------------------ Ironfleet.com |

Yeah well, get on with a newly trained/budding FC if you want to see uber-caution (boredom). I realize why and understand, but still...

This
ive been in faction warfare for about a month, and by far, my favorite FC is PaddyPaddy
he doesnt hide when the enemy is near, hell, we took on a pirate fleet with two command ships in it once with him as FC
and some FC's dont like it when they command fleets that wind up flying into their suicide, honeslty, its because it would make their reputation look bad, i wouldnt want to fly with an FC where 90% of his ops led to his fleet being gang ****d with a broken pool stick (in-game, so to speak)
as i said, most FC's arent complete cowards, and those who do, dont FC that often

Happens quite often. First they gather a huge fleet for an hour or more. This fleet will be bigger than any other active fleet at a given time, so noone will engage it.
This fleet will then roam om FW space but won't get any fights. It will then camp a gate for another hour, till the opposite site got an even bigger fleet. Instead of getting a similar fleet, the other side will of course gather at least like 20-30% more ships, to be sure.
In that case the first fleet just runs back to highsec. At the end you waited 1 hour gathering, 1 hour roaming, 1 hour camping and then going back to highsec without a fight. I've seen this so often that i start betting bored and annoyed, hardly anyone wants to engage, everyone wants to get a bigger fleet or run if the fleet is little smaller - this way there won't be any fights, just a bunch of cowards caring about their lousy ships. I'm starting to hate carebears. Sometimes people even don't want to engage a smaller fleet because "this could be a bait" and "they could hotdrop a larger fleet on us" this makes me sick. I have that damn brutix, bruitix are often primaried, and i have 0 tank modules. I have been with it well over 10 hours on fleetpos during last weeks and it's still alive, this makes me sad.

Standard in EVE for years now, really. 0.0 is mostly the same. People generally do NOT engage in EVE unless they are pretty certain they can win. That's very common throughout EVE.

It's not only the big fleets, the last 2 fleets were actualy smaller gangs of 15-20 ships. The first one was heading back after half an hour because there were reports that a larger enemy fleet was approaching. The second got stuck in a system with a similar sized fleet, only that they had more heavy ships, including command- and battelships. People were debating whether to engage or not. I was asking to fight but was told to stfu because others didn't want to risk something.
After a while the enemy fleet was reinforced and the question then only was how to escape. People then decided to warp from safespot to safespot till there is a 3rd fleet formed up to come and help us out. A big waste of time at the end, and no fight. Start my own fleet ? I'm not an FC, i don't have the proper skills and my english isn't good enough, and solo pvp is hardly possible if you are trained in caldari ships. Somehow it's not like in the beginning, where we had a lot more fights. But then again maibe i just had a streak of bad luck .. but the last OPs with diffrent FCs were just a boring waste of time with no fights because of timid FCs. And no, i'm not going to call names, we can be glad when someone steps up and leads a fleet, we don't have many good FCs, i'm not going to criticise the few who do the job, just join less ops and maybe leave militia soon, if this trend continues.

You also have to consider that an FC may know more than you. I've been in separate channels with FC's as a scout and with a spy alt relaying information. Precise reason why I stopped joining fleets. I only join 10 through 5 man roaming gangs tbh. Anything else is just meh imo >_>

I've been in quite a few FW gangs. First one was a 3 hour one and we got 16 ships to start with and reinforced on the fly up to an end total of about 50 by the 2 hour mark. We killed a pirate camp of around 6 ships (wrong place wrong time for them), engaged an enemy fleet of 16 ships (we had around 20), and they scattered after we killed a few and had no losses, then we killed a lone redeemer (some random idiot hehe) who decided to jump through into our gate camp, then well we heard some loose info about an enemy fleet camping a gate, so we went to the other side and sat there a minute and they came through, what we didn't know was their numbers or ship types, only guesses, and well when they came, we were somewhat EWAR heavy with 5 BS, and well their 70 ships that were very BS heavy ripped us up, I got called primary first in a Hyperion and well the FC shouted to scatter and get out safe ASAP while I sat tanking the 20 seconds I could to buy time I spose hehe. But that was a good engagement we got kills and even though at the end we had to run, we actually engaged and had fun.
Another FC I was with 2 times was the first time, run around avoid fights, head home, the guy the whole time swearing and abusing etc, the second time he said to fit ships we could lose because we were going to engage no matter what, so fit BC or less. We ended up making our way into a plex in a system not far from the enemy main FW systems. The plex was BC max ship size, and we got reports of a massive fleet, we had hoped they'd bring many BS and only a few could jump through which would land them in the middle of 6 gank brutix, instead they had a heavy EWAR fleet with BC's and Cruisers, we got beaten but took out a large chunk :)
I'd rather engage and lose then do nothing and waste time.

If you don't like the FCs in your militia and think you would be better, start training leadership skills and start leading your own fleets. It's no good asking other FCs to change, they all have their own style and the experienced ones have developed it over many battles. If it doesn't work for you then all I can suggest is you go out and form your own gangs or fleets, depending on what you want to do

Just because they have developed a style over time with experience doesn't mean that their style isn't bad/boring.
I find that FCs tend to start of very conservative and risk-adverse. Over time some people develop the confidence to become more aggressive. You never hear about people being great FCs because they keep people alive and gank loners here and there. People develop a reputation as a great FC by taking fights they shouldn't, but pulling it out anyway.
Ultimately though it really matters on the culture and environment. In more carebearish environments fleet members are more concerned about staying alive and getting easy killmails, and so a conservative FC will flourish. In a pvper environment though most of the members are adrenaline junkies and will flock to a talented aggressive FC. If there are a lot of conservative FCs in factional warfare then it's because the average factional warfare fleet member is more on the conservative non-pvper end of the spectrum.
