You would first have to identify which part of America you are talking about before it became a nationalistic statement

When people say America, they're usually referring to Yankland.

True, but good number of the male Europeans that I have had the pleasure of knowing personally say that people from the States are ignorant. One of the examples they use is the stereotypical ignorance of world geography. So I am making it a point to point out when anyone uses America but means the US that they are wrong. There are 23 countries in the Americas and if you count the islands 36. That is an awfully large generalization that I personally can not stand from anyone no matter their nationality.
P.S. The States or US is not really that hard to type out and using America in place of that is incorrect.
P.S.S. As "unpatriotic" as it may be I also cringe at America the Beautiful as a "nationalistic" hymn.

A few points of semantic correctness you seem to be oblivious too:
1) Someone CAN use the term America to refer to the US, as long as the object is non-specified or inclusive. eg: "Petrol Price In UK hit $12 a gallon", "Gee, I'm glad I don't live in Europe anymore". Although we're referring specifically to the UK, its perfectly acceptable to point out that you don't live in any of Europe any more, since it's an inclusive term.
2) Americans use the term America to refer to their home country all the time, not just Europeans. The word "Americans", for example, as an analogue of "Canadians" and "Mexicans". "Made in America", "The American Dream" and "As American as...", too. When was the last time you heard anyone says "As United Statsian as mom's apple pie", hmmm?
3) I wonder how frequently Americans say "I'm going on holiday to Europe", or "I know an Asian guy", when what they mean is "I'm going on holiday to the Netherlands" or "I know a South Vietnamese guy". How about "African American" (instead of Nigerian American, say), or perhaps just a good ol' US "Southerner". People use generalisations all the time, and it's perfectly reasonable and acceptable, and doesn't need a new frickin' forum post every time... ------

True, true, and rue and when used incorrectly it still irks me. There are instances within theses forums where I do let it go and those are when the generalizations are acceptable. As I said in the post just above this I made the mistake of missing the fact that this was an instance where the rest of the Americas could be included. That being said, I feel my point has been made and if others continue to incorrectly use America in future posts I am going to let it roll off my shoulder and let others see the ignorance for themselves; or not.

I find it interesting how no-one here is coming out to defend rap as an artform. Does it perhaps say something about the lack of correlation between a thinking mans game and rythmic bragging?
Then again the goons haven't posted yet have they?

Well since you asked. Rap is a very solid musical form and there are some very good rappers past and present. The problem is that rap is so commercialized that anything decent is kept to the underground. Pretty much the symptom of the recording industry. I am not familiar with the above mentioned act and if it is within any close relation to what is consider popular rap I would rather not check it out.
There are those that would argue that the rap that gets the airplay is a good thing because it opens door for other act. This point of view is partly correct if there was an actual message worth being spread in their music, but that is rarely the case. These individuals also say my viewpoint is ignorant. My view is that individuals that work hard and do honest work, hose that put their feet to the pavement and fight for their art form, are the ones that make a difference. Not individuals that ride coattails.

A day and a half has passed since I posted last. I made an edit to include some link over 12 hours later and I think most had already let this thread go. But I thought the following link is a really good one that really applies to all people not doing all they can to help themselves get ahead, I am not implying that anyone here is like that, it is just that typically rap gets a negative image because of the crap that is out there in the mainstream. The other links in my previous post are good, but not as powerfull as this one.
KRS One This is a must view. Especially if you think rap is crap and of little social conscience.

Lemmings; all of them I tell you. Kidding aside, just becuse a song has a solid beat and is easy and fun to dance to does not make it good music. It makes it good dance music.
And I seriuosly can not beleive that the above few posters have not made either a positive or negative comment about my KRS One link. That is by far the best rap on this page and arguably one of the best rappers of all time. I guess people ignore links most of the time.
By the way Alex those songs you linked, Method Man, Will Smith, and Jay-Z are the only ones worth while in my book, and in that order. The others are raps equivelent to all the no name wannabe late 80's hair metal bands. Sex, Drugs, and Rap and Roll are what those other guys are about. Fine for them to make money but I laugh at the people that play this stuff in their car. I mean only a few of those people would know who Public Enemy is and would probably laugh at you if you told them the original founder of Def Jam Records is an White Punk.
