I came up with this idea while talking with my corp members, ships should show damage, right now if you reach structure then you show damage, how about a bit of realism.
First off the ship has a constant shield around it how about showing it with maybe a blue tinge around the ship or faint bubble (Yes I know about Invulnerability Fields) whenever the shield takes damage it should maybe ripple from the impact depending on how big it was, when the shield falls then it's onto armour, impacts should show fire sprouting from the point of impact and maybe electrical sparks, finally structure, the hull should clearly show breaches and huge electrical fires sprouting from them (for added effect maybe crew being pulled into space from the breach) and maybe a change in colour for the thruster trails from blue to red to signify something's wrong.
Next idea is about showing damage on the overview, a visual cue would be nice on players to show damage, the white brackets that signify players should be colour coded (not the background behind it) green to signify that the ship is still in shield and it grows darker as they take damage until the shields fall then it turns yellow to signify armour again growing darker as it takes damage until finally it turns red to signify hull breach growing darker until it turns black and the ship explodes.
These visual cues are useful in a few ways, one you can tell how damaged a ship is a single glance of either their ship or the overview, it enhances game enjoyment with better graphics.
Just a few ideas and I hope y'all like them and I hope CCP considers a least modifying them and adding them in some way.

If you want to talk about reality, ships should slow down as their structure goes down. The structure of a ship holds it together. The more the structure of a ship is compromised, the more the structure is incapable of flying at normal or fast speeds without further compromising the structure. Granted, non-AB or non-MWD speed can probably stay the same, but once you start using MWD or AB with lower structure, the structure should either limit speed, or the speed will cause the structure to further degrade.
Crewman: "Captain! If we go any faster, she'll fly apart!"
Podpilot: "Then fly her apart dammit!"

Another one!? They need to put this in the stiky about frequently proposed ideas.
That said most of us support this idea
As for th speed thing. It should affect speed; it should affect acceleration since acceleration is when forces are applied to the structure -So says Xindi Kraid

True. Good point.

I love this idea. In fact I made my own post about it. As the graphix become more advcanced the effects should also be enhanced. & the fact that if these changes are applied, you would see from the impacts on the ship that the shield is down, or the structure is being hit. It would entertain and inform at the same time. The current system only informs.
On the same lines, when a hit is recorded as "glancing," perhaps it should show like that. All hits from turrets show as full hits, we only know how strong they are from the readout. But if rounds kind of ricochet off the hulls, armour, shield then we could tell instantly whether the hit was good or not. So a good, wrecking hit would casue a ship-wide shokwave visible from the attacker.
I think that intime one could almost rely on the graphical cues to onfirm you of the potency of your attack without the complete reliance on the target readout bars.
