How the heck are people keeping there picture sigs under the 24,000 byte limit (24 kb) limit specified in the rules? that's insane. |

Lower color depth (256 colors rather than true color), and compressing file formats such as .jpg.

PNG-8 and/or reducing the colour information.
PNG-8 allows for transparency but not things like drop shadows.
My site has sigs with transparency under 24k

my sig doesnt look narly as complicated as the ones on your site but the when saved as png it becomes a 100+kb file!

I use photoshop for a living, I can squeeze the last few bytes out of anything.
Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

It¦s indeed abit frustrating. I use photoshop files though, JPG format. When saved at high quality (11/12) I get files +/- 100 kb big. So I have to tone quality down, to avarage (5), and that gets it just under 24 kb most of the times. The quality of the sig suffers offcourse due to this.

if u have no transparent area use .jpg quality 60-70
for transparent u can use .png but IE6 have some problems to render .png files
