It took me 7 mins to log into eve today, the log on screen just locks up all the time, if that was a new player logging on they would prob think eve just doesn't work on there comp so you will prob end up on losing subscribers.

That sounds pretty bad. Weird, too, because I've never experience this, at all. Neither on my good machine, or my really crappy one.
Any idea if it might be a problem on your end? Spyware, antivirus software, poor isp, shared connection in a dorm, downloading in the background, slow cpu, etc, etc?
I ain't no comp genius. Just figured I'd toss out a few laments and ideas.

Its eve loading your cache, with an empty cache folder it loads in about 20sec, but with all the settings, portraits, and etc it needs time.

I tried to make a new character a few weeks ago on another account, after going through all the options I waited forever, then it timed out (no it wasn't Sunday evening)... I don't know what they are doing, but this surely puts off newer players...

Eve will only ever use a single core, as its coded in Stackless Python and that doesnt do well multithreaded i believe.
Also your cache will (or should) be in the My Documents / Eve folder, but you should be able to use the ingame - esc - general - Clear Cache option.

Irony.
For the mouth breathers: If they problem is user, why does the user have to fix the game? Why can't it detect a broken cache and clear it its damn self?

Because its not broken, its just full of shit it needs to load, if a cache is corrupt thats when you log in with no settings loaded and the client has just made you a new cache anyway, so it solved the problem, but then people complain.

If EvE is not able to maintain it's own self-generated cache, then it is *indeed* broken. Currently it's akin to you crapping your pants without ever bothering to change your briefs.

You generated that cache, dumbshit. It's all the user pictures you clicked and loaded.

CCP can't fix it because it's your machine or ISP.
And if it really takes you 7 minutes then it's not just your cache. I haven't re-installed in 5 years. Even when windows got replaced with linux I just copied the Eve folder and I *never* clear my cache. I still only need seconds to log in.
Of course if you log in to Jita - welcome to the most crowded system in Eve. But even there I don't remember taking more than a couple of minutes or so - but then I very rarely go to Jita. --- ISK BUYER = LOOSER EVE TV- Bring it back!

try clearing your cache, it REALLY helps, open up esc > reset settings > clear cache files (i think thats what it says) because i have had that probelm a few times as well, where it would begin taking like a minute for the stupid "Authenticating" " gatherin bulk data" crap like that

No, EvE generated that cache because that's how the developers designed it to operate. Those same developers could also set a reasonable threshold for cache size or even flush cached items over a certain age.
Placing the onus on users to clear a *trivial* cache that is automatically generated is not a good practice. It's also counter-intuitive to your average Joe Schmoe.

If only there was some way to have a multi-level demand loaded cache. Then we wouldn't have OSes which take 3 hours to pre-load all the **** from your hard drive just in case you want to view it before letting you log on.

Its not my machine i have a dual core 2 and its not my broadband because 2mb should be plenty and its not jita because i cant even go in high sec. I tried clearing my cache like people have said here and it seems to have worked, so the problem is the game itself.

mine was taking several minutes to login as well... looked like some issue with authentication or something. but i cleared the cache and now the login process takes only a few seconds. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |

Just figured I'd add that EVE does clear out the old stuff in your cache. That's why some people have the 7 minute problem and others never see it even after years without clearing the cache themselves. Basically the information expires x amount of days after you last used it.
Personally mine shifts around but never really goes beyond 1 minute.

I'm no computer guru, so there may well be a way to get around this, but:
I've been dealing with 5-minute "Authenticating..." forever now. I'd clear the cache, except that when you go to clear cache in the esc. menu, it says that by clearing your cache you lose all your bookmarks, as well. I don't feel like losing all my off-grids at various gates and stations or my deep safes that the average prober won't be able to break, so... given the choice, 5-minute Authentication it is!

I have 2 PCs, both windows XP Pro, one slightly newer than the other hardware wise. Same XP Pro software builds, same AV software. On the same network, etc, etc.
One takes a couple of minutes to authenticate and, apart from one patch, always has done. The other takes about 15 seconds.
Go figure. Cheers, Ruf. |
