So there I am. Having my morning coffee and happily looking at last nights profit. Was a good night. And after a few min start adjusting buy orders and putting up new ones for items that have orders filled.
All of a sudden I see: Total in escrow: 520.968.878,18(-1.230.000,18 ISK to cover )
I dont understand - what is this ISK to cover. There is still some ISK left in my wallet after all buy orders were done. Also I dont have marging trading skill.
Whats going on

You'll need to cough up the rest of the ISK when your BUY orders are fulfilled.

I see ...
But how / why does this happened? I dont remember checking any boxes or anything that would indicate this.
All said and done - I like to play it safe and not have minuses to cover if at all possible.

It happens when you put up buy orders so you don't need to fork up all the ISK at once. You can train skills to maximise this ability so you can pony up even less initially. It's very useful when you start trading a lot.
Manage your ISK so you don't ever go into negative - that's bad and has some unfortunate side effects on your trading abilities.

If you don't have margin trading it is probably a bug ive noticed a few times.
If you place a buy order for 10mil, it puts 10mil into escrow, sometime when you reduce the price it doesn't refund all the isk you put in so you end up with a negative ammount to cover, the money will be refunded when the order is cancelled or completed

I regularly see (-0.01 ISK to cover), but I've never seen it higher than that. I assumed a lag related issue since I trade in Jita.

I actually think that is a rounding issue where you really owe something like 0.0002isk or something.

I recall having a suspicion that such a negative "to cover" amount might result from having one or more buy orders partially filled at prices below your bids (meaning that the full amount you entered into escrow will not be needed).
In my wallet, such amounts were always relatively small compared to the total escrow amount, and over time this seemed to correct itself, so I haven't yet actively tested this situation.

Bingo.
I can't believe no one has mentioned this sooner.
It is because people sold you items for less money than your buy orders offered. A negative value means you are going to receive that much more money when the order is fully filled (I believe that is the timing). A positive value means you have the skill margin trading and will owe that much more as it is filled.

I regularly see this happen as I don't have margin trading however I change high quantity buy/sell orders frequently by .01 and it doesn't refund the cash properly. However, I believe that it does refund the ISK when the order is filled/cancelled.
